AIR-GAS APPARATUS Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK Jonn Cox, a subject-of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 212 Brecknock road, Camden Town, London, T. WV., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvennants Relating to Air-Gas Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air gas apparatus and has for its object to provide an automatically operating pressure regulator for the supply of volatile liquid and air to the carbureter of such apparatus so that under all conditions of use the volatile liquid ad mitted into the carburetor shall be proportionate in volume to the air that is passed through for its vaporization.
In air-gas apparatus it is known to effect the regulation of the supply of volatile liquid and air to the carbureter, but under abnormal conditions, such as low consumption of the air-gas mixture, the proportion of air to vapor varies considerably, and a particular object of my invention is to provide an apparatus by which the proportion of air to vapor determined under all conditions of working with the utmost precision so that a uniform mixture of vapor and air is always provided.
According to the invention I effect the regulation of the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carburetcr from a pressure chamber within which pressure is varied under control, for example, from the gas holder bell; so that thus on the gas holder bell rising, the pressure in the chamber is reduced and the valves controlling the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carbureter partially or completely close, whereas on the gas holder bell falling the pressure in the pressure chamber increases and the controlling valves open until normal conditions are established.
The air used for carburation is advantageously used as the agent for the application of pressure in the pressure chamber and is passed from the blower or compressor directly through the pressure chamber under the control of its valve to the carbureter; while the variation of the pressure of air within the chamber is advantageously effected for example from the gas holder hell by means of a relief valve.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 represents the regulator, in part sectional elevation, as connected to the gas holder bell of an air gas apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a constructional modification.
In carrying the invention into effect as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, I provide the casing a open at the top for the reception of a member such as a flexible diaphragm 5 preferably of chrome leather which is secured in position upon the casing by means of a cover plate (B. The casing is provided with two ports a (i advantageously in opposite positions, the one a? for connection to the air pump or blower of the air-gas apparatus, while the other port serves as an outlet for air on the opening of the relief valve 0 which in open ing slides upwardly in grooves 0 provided upon the adjacent face of the casing. Another port or passage a is provided through which the air passes from the casing to the carburetor. This latter port or passage is under the control of a piston valve (Z which is mounted within a cylindrical boss (1: integrally cast with the casing a and carried upon the casing by means of a number of radial arms a", the cylindrical boss (1 being so provided that an annular passage and lateral ports a leading therefrom are formed through which the air passes to the central port a.
The piston valve (Z is carried by means of a spindle e, which at the part passing through the clamping plates 0 is advantageously screw-tln'cadcd for the reception of nuts by means of which the diaphragm may be securely connected to the rod by the clamping plates. The upper extremity of the rod 0 is connected to a bell crank lever f 7' carried in a bracket f mounted on the cover plate a of the casing, while the arm 7' of the bell crank lever has connected to it a link g Whose opposite extremity is connected to the lever of the valve cook it controlling the supply of volatile liquid through the supply pipe 7L to the carburetor.
The gas holder bell 717 of the air-gas apparatus is connected by such means as that illustrated, to a lever j whose opposite extremity is connected to a pillar 9' carried by the cover plate a while a link i is connected to this lever j and at its opposite extremity carriesthe slide or relief valve 0 before referred to.
In operation it will be understood that, on the consumption of air gas being reduced and the gas holder bell in rising, the link i will also rise and carry with it the air relief valve 0. By such means part of the air passing through the pressure chamber formed in the casing a passes outwardly through the port a and thus, by the reduction of pressure, the diaphragm Z) falls carrying with it the piston valve (Z by which the port or passage (0 is closed or partially closed, while also the valve cock h con trolling the supply of volatile liquid to the carbureter is closed or partiallyclosed, so that thus the supply of air and the supply of volatile liquid to the carbureter are directly and proportionately reduced. Simi larly on the fall of the gas holder bell 10 the air relief valve 0 falls and closes the port a whereupon the resulting increase of pressure in the pressure chamber causes the diaphragm Z) to rise, and thus to open the air port a and the valve cock for the supply of volatile liquid to the carbureter.
It will be understood that the link i may be provided with a nut 2' having reversed threads by which its length may be varied for the proper adjustment of the valve 0 with reference to the gas holder bell while similar means may be provided upon the rod 6 and upon the link 9.
In carrying the invention into effect according to the modification illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, I provide a circular casing or pressure chamber a with a central aperture within which is mounted a dia phragm Z) which is secured in position in the casing by means of a clamping ring (R. Two ports or passages 64 a open out from this receptacle advantageously in opposite positions, the one 0, for connection to the air pump or blower and the other a for the outlet of air from the air pressure chamber formed in the casing, which outlet is under the control of the valve 0. Centrally disposed beneath the diaphragm is a port or passage a leading to the carbureter, which is covered by means of a small casing Z carrying the valve m. This casing is provided with a number of ports Z advantageously two in number, in diametrically opposite positions, which in one or the lowest position of the diaphragm are'completely covered by the valve m. This valve is of any convenient form and is connected by means of a rod 0 with a central boss 6 carried by the diaphragm. The rod is advantageously screw-threaded in that part which passes through the diaphragm and means such as a mill-headed nut a may be provided by means of which its longitudinal position with reference to the diaphragm may be adjusted and fixed.
A shackle connection is advantageously screwthreaded on the extremity of the rod by which connection is made through a link 0 to one arm f of the bell crank lever f F. The opposite arm f is connected by means of another link 7) to the lever arm of the cock or valve ]L which controls the supply of volatile liquid through a sight feed device. This latter link is advantageously constituted of two members connected together by means of a nut f having reversed threads so that its length may be increased or diminished as may be necessary for the adjustment of the proper relation between the air valve to the carbureter, the diaphragm, and the cook or valve controlling the volatile liquid and for this purpose also a series of holes f may be provided in the second arm f of the bell crank lever P, f to Which the link 9 last referred to is connected, and the end of the link may be connected to that arm by means of a bolt or pin passing through any one of the holes f in the series.
It will be understood that the invention is not confined to the means hereinbefore described for communicating movement from the diaphragm to the air valve and the volatile liquid valve, nor is it confined to the particular form of the pressure chamber hereinbefore described nor to the means employed for operating the air relief valve nor yet to the form of the said valve;
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In air gas apparatus, means for the regulation of the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carbureter consisting of a pressure chamber, a diaphragm in said pressure chamber, said diaphragm simultaneously controlling the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carbureter according to the pressure of air in the pressure chamber, and a relief valve by which the pressure Within the said chamber may be reduced.
2. In air gas apparatus, comprising a gas holder, a bell in said gas holder, means for the regulation of the supply of air and vola tile liquid to the carbureter, consisting of a pressure chamber, a diaphragm in said pressure chamber, said diaphragm simultaneously controlling the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carbureter according to the pressure of air in the pressure chamber, and means for varying the pressure within the said chamber directly from the gas holder bell and according to the volume of gas therein.
Air gas apparatus, comprising a gas holder, means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air for carburation passes, a diaphragm in said pressure chamber, said diaphragm simultaneously controlling the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carbureter according to the pressure of air in the pressure chamber, means for reducing the pressure of air within the pressure chamher, and additional means for the variation of the volume of air supplied to the car bureter.
l. Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air for carburation passes, a diaphragm in said pressure chamber, said diaphragm simultaneously controlling the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carbureter according to the pressure of air in the pressure chamber, and means for reducing the pressure of air within the pressure chamber according to the rate of consumption of air gas.
5. Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air for carburation passes, a diaphragm in said pressure chamber, said diaphragm simultaneously controlling the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carburetor according to the pressure of air in the pressure chamber, a gas holder bell into which the air gas is passed from the carbureter, and means for reducing the pressure of air within the pressure chamber by a relief valve operated directly from the gas holder bell.
6. Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its way to the carbureter, a valve mounted within said pressure chamber for controlling and cutting off the supply of air therefrom to the carbureter, a diaphragm within the said pressure chamber and connected to the said valve, said diaphragm being operated. by the pressure of air withinthe pressure chamber, means for controlling the valve in the volatile liquid supply pipe directly from the said diaphragm, and means for varying the pressure of air within the said pressure chamber.
7. Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its way to the carbureter, a valve mounted within said pressure chamber for controlling and cutting off the supply of air therefrom to the carbureter, a diaphragm within the said pressure chamber and con nectcd to the said valve, said diaphragm being operated by the pressure of air within the pressure chamber, means for controlling the valve in the volatile liquid supply pipe directly from the said diaphragm, and means consisting essentially of a relief valve for varying the pressure within the pressure chamber.

Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its way to the carburetor, a valve mounted within said pressure chamber for controlling and cutting off the supply of air therefrom to the carbureter, a diaphragm within the said pressure chamher, and connected to the said valve, said diaphragm being operated by the pressure of air within the pressure chamber, means for controlling the valve in the volatile liq uid supply pipe directly from the said diaphragm, means for regulating the pressure of air within the said chamber consisting of an air relief valve, and means for connecting the said air relief valve with the gas holder bell so as to be opc'ated therefrom.
9. Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its way to the carbureter, a valve mounted within said pressure chamber for controlling and cutting off the supply of air therefrom to the carbureter, a diaphragm within the said pressure chamber and connected to the said valve, said dia phragm being operated by the pressure of air within the pressure chamber, means for controlling the valve in the volatile liquid supply pipe directly from the said diaphragm, means for varying the pressure of air within the said pressure chamber, and means for adjusting the air valve in the pressure chamber with reference to the diaphragm.

Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its way to the carbureter, a valve mounted within said pressure chamber for controlling and cutting off the supply of air therefrom to the carbureter, a diaphragm within the said pressure chamber and connected to the said valve, said diaphragm being operated by the pressure of air within the pressure chamber, means for controlling the valve in the volatile liquid supply pipe directly from the said diaphragm, means for varying the pressure of air within the said pressure chamber, and means for the adjustment of the relation between the air valve and the valve for the supply of volatile liquid to the carburetor.

Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carburetcr, a gas holder bell into which the air gas is discharged from the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air is passed before it enters the carbureter, a dia phragm in said pressure chamber, said diaphragm simultaneously controlling the supply of air and volatile liquid to the carbnreter according to the pressure of air in the pressure chamber, means for regulating the volume of air passed into the carbureter, an
air relief valve in the pressure chamber, a lever pivoted at one end and connected at the other with some part of the gas holder bell, and a link connecting the said lever to the said air relief valve.

Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its way to the carbureter, an air valve mounted within said pressure chamber for controlling the supply of air therefrom, a diaphragm to which the said air valve is connected, said diaphragm being operated by the pressure of air Within the pressure chamber, means connecting the said air valve and diaphragm with the controlling valve of the volatile liquid supply pipe for the carbureter, and means for varying the pressure within the said pressure chamber.

Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its way to the carbureter, an air valve mounted within said pressure chamber for controlling the supply of air therefrom, a diaphragm to which the said air valve is connected and means for the ad justment of the said diaphragm with respect to the said air valve, said diaphragm being operated by the pressure of air within the pressure chamber, means connecting the said air valve and diaphragm with the controlling valve of the volatile liquid supply pipe for the carbureter, and means for varying the pressure within the said pressure chamber.
14. Air gas apparatus, comprising means for supplying air under pressure to the carbureter, a pressure chamber through which the air passes on its Way to the carbureter, a gas holder bell into which the air'gas is discharged from the carbureter, an air valve for controlling the supply of air from the said pressure chamber, a diaphragm to which the said air valve is connected, said diaphragm being operated by the pressure of air within the pressure chamber, means connecting the said air valve and diaphragm with the controlling valve of the volatile liquid supply pipe for the carbureter, and means for varying the pressure within the said pressure chamber consisting of a pressure relief valve connected to the said gas holder bell.
