To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr HocrmNAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to packing machines and more particularly to a double packing machine, my object being to provide simple attachments for actuating two packers in unison, doing away with all friction and other clutches and adapting the packers to run continuously.
The means by which I accomplish the above, are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved double packer. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section through the bag holder. Fig. 4. is a vertical section through the bag holder and a bag carried thereby showing the same disposed around its feed spout.
Referring now to these figures, I provide two vertical packers, each of which is of a substantially well known type, comprising a frame A, in the lower portion of which is a vertically slidable carriage B supporting the bag holder C, this bag holder being adapted to receive and support therein a bag C, by means of an upper clamping ring 0, the said bag holder being in detachably connected hinged sections and coupled by means of a latch 0'. This carriage frame B is movable vertically so as to position the bag and bag holder around a feed-spout D, in which is located the usual vertical feed screw, this feed-screw being mounted upon. the lower end of a vertical shaft D having a bevel gear d adjacent its upper end. The two frames A are suitably braced and connected and between their upper portions eX- tends a short horizontal shaft E, the ends of which are provided with bevel gears e meshing with the before-mentioned bevel gears d, the inner upright portions A and A of the frames opposing one another in spaced relation and the shaft E being provided, in the space between the frames, with a driven pulley E. Thus through a belt connection from a suitable motor or the like, to the driven pulley E, the two feed-screws are continuously rotated and bags carried by the bag holders may be alternately filled.
The hopper, the lower portion F of which is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, receives alfalfa, grain, flour and the like through any suitable means, and communicate with divergent branches F and F the lower portions of which are substantially vertical and communicate with the feed spouts D, a suitable valve G being mounted at the juncture of the upper ends of the branches F and F so as to direct the material into one of the branches to the exclusion of the other, the stem of this valve being provided with oppositely projecting arms g, to the outer ends of which are pivotally connected the upper ends of depending pull rods H and H, the lower ends of which are provided with latch pieces h and h which are movable vertically within keepers a and a secured adjacent the lower ends of the inner frame portions A and A? before mentioned, these latch pieces h and it being provided with recesses 70 which the keepers are adapted to engage when the rods are lowered. intermediate their ends the rods are provided with rigid collars 7L and coiled about the rods below these collars are springs it, the upper ends of which are connected to the collars mentioned and the lower ends of which are connected to flexible members '5 extending upwardly and inwardly around pulleys z" from the lower ends of trip bars T. These trip bars are journaled upon the inner frame portions A and A and their upper ends are bent inwardly so that when the carriage frames B are raised, they will strike the trip bars and move the same vertically, pull ing down upon the pull rod.
It is to be understood, of course, that when one of the carriage frames B is raised, the other is lowered as shown in Fig. 1, the connections above mentioned being so arranged that the valve G will be turned to admit material through the particular branch of the hopper which leads to the feed spout of the raised carriage. Thus with the parts in the position indicated in Fig. 1 wherein the left hand packer is in operation, the carriage of this packer will be gradually lowered during its filling. The inner side of each of the carriage frames B is provided with an inwardly projecting lug b which, during the lowering movement of the respective carriage frame, will strike the latch piece 7L and move the same out of engagementwith its keeper a, thus releasing the pull rod H, whereupon the spring h of the pull rod H will serve to rock the valve G to close the branch F and open the branch F and when the carriage frame B of the right hand packer is raised, it will engage and lift the trip bar I, causing engagement of the latch piece /L with its keeper a, thus reversing the parts so that the right hand packer will be in operation while the left hand packer is in lowered position for the removal of its filled bag and the substitution of a new bag for filling. Thus it will be seen that the operation of my improved double packer will be continuous without the necessity for riction and other clutches and necessitating manual labor only to the extent of placing new bags for filling and removing the filled ones.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a pair of upright packers embodying vertically movable bag carrying frames, feed spouts and feedscrews within the spouts, means for continuously and simultaneously rotating the said feed-screws, and a feed hopper having branches leading to the said feed spouts, a valve mounted at the juncture of the branches for directing material into one branch to the exclusion of the other, verti-.
cal pull rods having connection with the valve at their upper ends, and provided at their lower ends with latch members, stationar keepers with which said latches are engageable when their respective pull rod is lowered, vertically movable trip bars adapted to be engaged by the carriage frames during the vertical movement of the latter and having connection with the said pull rods whereby to cause lowering movement of the latter, and coil springs interposed within the said connections between the trip bars and the said pull rods, all for the purpose described.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a pair of verti cal packers embodying vertically movable carriage frames, feed spouts and feedscrews within the said spouts, a driven shaft extending between the packers and having connection with the feed-screws for continuously rotating the same, a feed hopper having branches leading to the said feed spouts, a valve movable in the upper adjoining ends of the said branches whereby to alternately close one and open the other, and connections for effecting the movement of the said valve, said connections embodying members actuated by the carriage frames during their vertical movement and latch members also actuated by the said carriage frames.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a pair of vertical packers embodying vertically movable carriage frames, feed spouts and feedscrews within the said spouts, a driven shaft extending between the packers and having connection with the feedscrews for continuously rotating the same, a feed hopper havlng branches leading to the said feed spouts, a valve movable in the upper adjoining ends of the said branches whereby to alternately close one and open the other, and connections for effecting the movement of the said valve, said connections embodying vertical pull rods having latch members for securing the same in lowered position, and
trip bars flexibly connected to the said pull rods, said latch members and said trip bars being actuated by the carriage frames during vertical movement of the latter.
