SHOULDER-BAG WATER-SPRAYING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL W. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glendale Springs, in the county of Ashe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder-Bag Water-Spraying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in water-bags which are adapted to be carried upon the back of a person by means of shoulder-straps and may be used for various purposes.

My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the water-bag disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,003,855, dated September 19, 1911, and is more particularly directed to the apparatus for filling and straining the water or other liquid to be carried.

WVhen the water is obtained from streams or springs it is important that no leaves, twigs or other foreign matter should be taken into the bag. It is also desirable that the filling receptacle should be attached to the bag so as to be ready for immediate use and yet that it should not be cumbersome or in the wa when not in use. I have, therefore, devised a filling apparatus which is attached directly to the top of the bag which will collapse and can be locked in a fiat position against the bag and which is also provided with a filtering medium.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a perspective View showing the manner of carrying my water-bag; Fig. 2, is a rear elevation of the bag; Fig. 3, is a side elevation thereof; Figs. 4:, 5 and 6, are enlarged detail views of the filling apparatus; and Fig. 7, is a vertical section on the line 77 of Fig. 6.

I prefer to construct the bag 1 of canvas which has been subjected to a waterproofing process and it may be substantially rectangular in outline with the bottom sloping toward one side in the lower end of which may be inserted a hose connection 3, to which a hose 1 is attached. The shoulderstraps 6, and breast-strap 7, are substantially the same as in my former patent.

An opening 8 is provided in the top seam, preferably in the center through which the bag may be filled when clear water is available. For the purpose of providing a convenient filling apparatus embodying a filter,

I provide a flexible pouch attachment constructed of canvas or other suitable fabric, having a front wall 10 secured along the bottom edge to the bag and at the ends being secured thereto by foldable strips 12. I have found it desirable to employ reinforcing rivets 14, at each end.

The filtering medium may consist of a fine wire gauze 15, secured around the edges and covering an aperture cut in the portion of the outer wall or casing of the bag which is inclosed by the pouch.

To provide against the 'entry of leaves, pebbles, and other matter, through the opening 8 when the bag is being filled through the pouch-funnel, I provide fastening devices 16, riveted to the inner side of the bag and having spring-pressed clips or hooks 17 which pass through eyelets 18, in the opposite wall and when sprung into locked posi tion, effectually close the opening 8. The importance of this feature will be appreciated by forest rangers and others who have experienced the inconveniences encountered when attempting to fill water-bags from streams.

The arrangement of my filling-pouch enables me to employ a large filtering opening so that it is not readily choked as in the ordinary type of funnel filters and the bag may be filtered very quickly. In fact, it is possible to fill the bag directly by dipping the pouch into the stream.

When the bag has been filled, the filter casing 10, is collapsed against the side of the bag and the eyelets 20, are passed over the hooks 17, to maintain the parts tightly together and close both the opening 8 and the filling pouch, thereby preventing any dust or dirt from entering the bag.

The many important advantages which result from my invention will now be apparent to those familiar with the use of water-bags.

When clean water is available the bag may be filled either through the opening 8 or simultaneously also through the pouch and filter opening. When dirty water or that contaminated with leaves and other foreign objects is being poured through the filter-pouch, the bag-opening 8 may be locked in closed position by means of the spring clasps l7 and when not in use the pouch may be collapsed and held fiat against the bag by said clasps. The filling and filtering apparatus is always ready for immediate use and provides a filtering surface of large area not liable to become clogged.

WVhile I have described in detail the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings for the purpose of clearly disclosing an embodiment of my invention, it is evident that changes may be made therein within the purview of the appended claims and without departing from the spirit ofmy invention.

1. A water-bag having an opening in its upper end, a filtering medium in one outer wall adjacent said opening, and a collapsi-' ble pouch secured to said wall and inclosing said medium, said pouch having an open top.

2. A water-bag having a filling-opening in the casing wall near the top thereof, a collapsible filling-pouch secured to said wall and inclosing said opening, and a fastening device adapted to secure the pouch in closed position.
