Be it known that I, AnoLri-r C. KLorriis'o, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Bed-Davenport; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reterence being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters ot reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

rlll-his invention relates particularly to iinprovements in the folding bed-frames ot bed-davenports and has for its Object the provision of improved means which is au tomatically operable to lock a bed-trame section and a supporting leg therefor in folded relation when the trame has been folded a predetermined extent, and to automatically release the same to permit an unfolding movement of the leg relative to its carrying section when the frame has reached a predetermined point in its unfolding movements.

ik further object of my invention is the provision, in combination with a pair ot relatively folding bedtrame sections, of iinproved means which is automatically operable to yieldingly lock the sections in spaced folded relation, and which does not depend on movements of the adjacent frame supporting leg `tor its locking or releasing niovements relative to the trame section.

Referring to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 designate two adjoining sections of a folding bed-trame, which sections are toldably connected at their adjacentl ends by connecting links 8,01 in any other suitable manner, and the outer section 1 having a supporting leg 4: pivoted to each side thereof adjacent to its outer end, as at 5, for tolding movements thereagainst, as indicated in the drawings.

Projecting upward from each side ot the section 1 adjacent to its outer end portion is a catch member 6 which, in the present instance, is attached to the section side by means of the'leg pivot 5 and is prevented from movement relative to the section 1 by flanges or tongues 7, 7, which are bent inward from the opposite side edges of the member 6 and project over the upper side Specification of lLetters Patent.

The inner edge of the member 11 is t'ansversely notched adjacent to its outer end with such notch in register with the inner end portion oit the notch 9, as shown at 13, to adapt the member 11 to coact with the under or exposed side oit' the stud 10 when within the arm notch 9 to resist a nf'itl'idrawal of the arm 6 from engage# ment therewith. lThe oscillatory movements of the catch-member 11 are limited by a stud let projecting` from the arm G through a registeringslot 15 in the catch`-member- The arm 9 is provided in a side edge thereoi, in the present instance, above thestud 14, with a recess 16 the inner end wall oi which is provided with a projection 17 about which the inner end of the coiled co-m`- pression spring 18 may be engaged, said spring being disposed within the recess 1G longitudinally et the arm G and having its outer end iitting over a stud or tail-piece 19 projecting `from the catch-member into the outer end portion of the recess 1G, as shown. The spring 1S normally holds the catchmember 11 in one position relative to the arm 6 and resists a releasing movement of' the same from engagement with the stud 10. The outer end of the catch-member 11 is tapered or bevel-ed similar to one of the beveled walls of the arm notch 8 to enable the stud 10 to torce the catch member outward against the tension ot the spring 18 when such member and the arm G are lowered thereover.

Pivoted to each of the legs 1, as at 20, is a gravity catchnmember 21 having the arms a and extending in diverging planes from its pivot with the free end of the arm c; inwardly hooked to adapt it to have hooked engagement with stud 22, which projects from the side of the frame section l between said arms. IVhen the frame section 1 is in the folded reclining position shown in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. l, the arm 7o of the catch-member, which arm is of greater weight than the arm a, has its lowering or gravity movements limitedby an abutting of the inner end portion c of the catch member against the leg flange 4ta. Likewise a swinging of the catch-member in the other direction is limited by the side cZ of the arm b striking against the leg flange 4a. Upon a raising or continued folding movement of the section l with the section 2, the arm b of the catch-member, when the sections have been raised a predetermined distance, will act by gravity to move the hooked end of the arm a. into hooked engagement with the stud i2, thus preventing the leg Il, which is locked thereby, from swinging forward from the section l when the sections have reached the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, or have passed beyond such position, upon a folding movement of the body-frame. Upon an unfolding movement of the bed-frame section it is evident that the catch-member 2l will move by gravity to stud releasing position when the sections 1 and 2 have reached a predetermined point in their unfolding movements between the dotted and full line positions shown in Fig. 1, thus enabling the operator to unfold the legs a from the section I preparator"T to raising the section 1 from over the section 2, some fo 1ce being necessary in such raising action due to the engagement of the catch means 6-11 with the studs 10 on the frame section 2.

In an unfolding of the bed-frame the operator stands in advance thereof, and in the unfolding of the section l from the section 2 it is most convenient for him to grasp the opposite legs 1i, a and to pull upward and forward on the same relative to the catch means G-ll with sufficient force to release such means from the respective studs l0. The catch-members 2l being automatic in their action need no attention on the part of the operator but stand in unlocked position relative to the respective studs 22 when the section l is folded in reclining position over the section 2, and automatically act to lock such legs when the frame sections l and 2 have been raised a predetermined distance from their reclining posit-ion.

I wish it understood that my invent-ion is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

l. The combination with a foldable multiple section frame and a member carried by one of the frame sections for pivotal folding movements relative thereto, of means carried by said member and automatically operable by gravity action to engage a part of the section carrying the member and to secure the member and the section carrying the same in folded relation when the frame has been folded a predetermined extent and to release the section when the frame has reached a predetermined point in an unfolding movement thereof.

2. The combination with a section of a foldable bed frame, said section having a projecting part, and a supporting leg carried by said section for folding movements thereagainst, of a catch-member pivotally carried by said leg and automatically operable by gravity act-ion to engage said projecting part and lock the leg and section in folded relation at a predetermined point in a. folding movement of the frame and to release the leg from its locked position when the frame has been unfolded a predetermined extent.

3. The combination with a section of a foldable bed-frame, said section having a projecting part, and a supporting leg carried by said section for folding movements thereagainst, of a catch-member pivotally the leg and having diverging arms projecting transversely from its pivot in position to straddle said projecting part, one of said arms being inwardly hooked to adapt it to swing into hooked engagement with said projecting part and the other arm being of greater weight than the hooked arm to cause it to control by gravity action the engaging and releasing movements of the hooked arm relative to the projecting part whereby the catch is automatically engaged with said part when the bed-frame has been folded a predetermined extent.
