To all whom it may concern "Be it known that I, Jonann VON HENTZEL, engineer, a subject of the Czar of Russia residing at 12 Homergasse Zurich, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Inr provements in iipparatus for Heating Liquids'by Electricity, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to iniprrn'cments in apparatus for heating liquids by electricity and more especially/to electric water heating devices in which the water passes continuously through the space et-ween two electrodes and serves as the resistance. In such electric heating devices, more especially when same are used by the medical profession, it is very important that the apparatus be perfectly safe in handling and that a simple regulation of the temperature and the water flow be obtainable.
The object of'the present invention is to provide an apparatus which fulfils the above mentioned requirements. This is obtained by connecting the vessel which contains the electrodes and the water path between the electrodes directly with the water admission pipe and the water delivery pipe, these connections being electrically insulated. and by arranging the said vessel to be incloscd by an outer casing which carries the electrically insulated water admission and water delivery pipes, the outer casing being elec rically insulated from the inner vessel.
The present apparatus does not require a separate device for regulating the temperature to which the water is heated since the adjustable How of water is suflicient for regulating the temperature thereof.

The improved apparatus comprises a cylindrical sleeve or shell 1 which is screw-threaded atthe top and at the b0 tom and upon which are screwed two capsfQ and 3. The water is supplied through a central bore of the lower cap and is discharged from the apparatus through a central'ibore of the upper cap. The water is admitted to the apparatus by means of a connection piece 17 which passes through the central bore of the lower cap 3.. This connection is provided with ex" ternal screw threads 17 by means of which it may be screwed directly into a water pipe or hose connected to a water supply, and 17 is a washer for forming a tight joint at this point. The connection piece 17 is screwed into the cap 8 and is secured in position by means of a nut 17 and a lock nut 17*. The upper end of the connection 17 is also provided with screw threads to receive a flanged threaded sleeve 18 for connecting to the tube 17 to an inner water admission tube 11 For further securing the connec tion there. may be provided a second flanged threaded sleeve 18, which engages the external threads on the sleeve 18 and a shoulder on-the connection 17.
An ivory sleeve 19 and the two insulating washers 19- and 19 made of vulcanized rubber. or other suitable material, serve for insulating the pipe 11 from the connection 17. The sleeve 1 is lined with a heat insaluting material 4, such as asbestos, below which there is provided an electrical insulating silesith lining 5. The upper cap 2 is also lined with an asbestos layer 4 and a ranged the sleeve 6 containing the electrodes which sleeve is closed by the bottom 11 21113 by the cover 6 The sleeve 6 is insulate from the shell 1 and the cap 2 by the above mentioned insulating layers both electrically and against heat transmission to the sleeve 1. Into the sleeve 6 is firmly pressed the outer hollow cylindrical electrode 1.5 and at a certain distance from the outer electrode is placed an inner electrode 16, which are preferably made of graphite. Between the two concentric electrodes there therefore an annular space into which the water enters through the admission pipe 11 and from which it is discharged by the delivery pipe 8. To the bottom piece 11 is fixed a terminal screwdl which serves for supplying the electricah current while the copper eye 14. serves as the second terminal.
Through the center of the sleeve 6 passes a central bolt 12 fixed to the bottom 11, the upper end of which is screw-threaded at 12 and serves for securing the electrode 16.

Underneath the disk 12* there is a mica plate 13 and under neath the latter a plate of vulcanized rubber 18 for the purpose of providing electrical insulation between thebottom 11 of the vessel and the central bolt 12. and the nut 7 there is arranged a disk 9 of vulcanized rubber and a similar disk 9 is arranged underneath the flange 8 of the pipe 8., Through'the flange 12, and the insulating disks 13 and 13" a free space is provided between the bottom 11 and the electrode 16 so that the electrode 16 is perfectly insulated from the bottom. The apparatus may also be provided with an adjustable base in which the wateradmission and, if necessary, the water regulating valve, may be arranged.
I claim 1. Apparatus for, heating liquids by electricity' comprising an outer cylindrical casing, an insulated layer within said casing,
a closed cylindrical casing within said first casing but insulated therefrom, a central rod extending through one end of second chamber but insulatedtherefrom, 'a cylindrical electrode mounted on'said rod, a hollow electrode surrounding said first electrode and pressed against the internal surface of the mner casing, electrical connections one to said rod and one to saidinner casing, and means for causing water to flow through the space between said electrodes and serve as a resistance, substantially as described.
2. Apparatus for heating'liquids by electricity comprising an outer cylindrical casing, closure caps at each end of said casing, a heatinsulating layer within said casing and within one of said closure caps, an electrical insulating layer within said heat insulating layer, a closed cylindrical casing in side said first casing but insulated therefrom, a central rod extending through one end of said inner casing but insulated there from, a cylindrical electrode mounted on said rod, a hollow electrode surrounding said first electrode, and pressed against the internal surface of said inner casing, an annular space betweensaid electrodes, an annular chamber between each end of the electrodes and the ends of said inner casing, electrical connections one to said rod and one to said inner casing, a water delivery pipe carried by first chamber but insulated therefrom and leading to one of the said annular spaces, and a discharge pipe insulated from both casings andleading from the other of said annular spaces, said discharge pipe passing through the closure cap provided with 'sald heat insulating layer; substantially as described. r In testimony whereof I,have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
