Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9,1913.
Application filed July 29, 1912. Serial No. 712,158.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ORA M. Lookwoon and ADIsoN A. SToU'r, citizens of the.. United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Switch-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in key operated locking devices for switch boxes for spark coils such as are used upon automobiles, launches and elsewhere in connection with internal combustion engines and more particularly to the casing inclosing said switches, the object of the invention being to provide a casing whereby the cover thereto may be readily removed and also to provide means for locking the same in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a locking device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved switcl Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, parts being broken away and in section, and Fig. 4E is a sectional view taken on the line ,L -4L of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the base member which comprises a ring 2 having an inwardly eX- tending annular flange 2 formed integral therewith and provided with a plurality of openings whereby the same may be readily secured to the coil box or a dash of the vehicle by means of the screws 3. Formed integral with the flange 2 and arranged at diametrically opposite points are the oppositely disposed hooks 4 which are adapted to engage the inwardly extending lugs 5 formed upon the inner side of the flange 6 of the body 7 so as to securely fasten the body 7 to the base member. The body 7 is held against rotary movement upon the base when the hooks 4 are engaged with the lugs 5 by means of a set screw 8 carried by the flange G and adapted to engage the rear of one of the hooks.
Arranged within the body 7 and secured thereto by means of the screws 9 is an insulating disk 10 to which are secured the metallic contacts 11 and 12, said contacts forming terminals for the lead wires 13 and 14 which are connected to the magneto 15 and the batteries 16. Mounted within the body 7 is a lock 17, the barrel 18 of which eX- tends through an opening 19 formed in the body 7. A. switch lever 20 is provided having a circular enlarged portion 21 formed integral therewith and mounted upon the barrel 18 of the lock and arranged between the insulating disk 10 and the body 7. EX- tending outwardly from the enlarged portion 21 is an arm 22, the outer end of which is adapted to engage with the contacts 11 and 12 when it is desired to complet-e a circuit, the switch lever is normally arranged in a neutral position as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. A third contact 23 is arranged within the body 7 at one side thereof and is connected by means of the lead wires 24 and 25 to the batteries 1G and the magneto 15.` The key (not shown) for operating the lock is adapted to fit into the key seat 26 to be rotated so as to project the bolt 27 and engage the same with the contact 23, which, when the arm 22 is engaged with either of the contacts 11 and 12, will complete the circuit. Secured to the rear end of the locking bolt 27 is a rod 28, the outer end of which is adapted toproject through the openings 29 formed in the flange 6 of the body 7 and one of the hook members 4, thus it will be seen that in this manner the body member 7 will, when the bolt 27 is in an unlocked position, be securely fastened against rotation so as to prevent the removal of the same. lt will be understood that the rod 28 locks the body member 7 to the base when the locking bolt 27 is in its unlocked position, therefore if the set screw S should be removed the body member will still be locked to the base so that the person holding the key to the lock would be the only one who could obtain access to the interior of the body. ln connecting either of the contacts 11 and 12 with the contact 23 to complete a circuit, the lever 20 is rotated until the arm 22 is engaged with either of the contacts 11 and 12, the locking bolt 2 7 is then projected so as to engage with the contact 23 which will readily connect either of the contacts 11 and l2 with the contact 23.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that a through connection between the contacts 11 and 12 and the magneto and batteries 15 and 16 cannot be completed without the use of a key, to project the locking bolt 27 which will be in possession of the owner at all times and it will be seen that the switch cannot be operated by unauthorized persons.
While we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying our invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims. i
What we claim is l. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base comprising a ring, oppositely disposed hook members formed on the inner side of said ring, one of which is provided with an opening, a body member rotatablyA mounted upon the base and provided with an outwardly extending flange adapted to engage over said ring, said flange being provided with an opening, lugs carried by said flange and adapted to be engaged by said hooks, means for holding said hooks into engagement with the lugs, a lock arranged within the body, a sliding bolt within the lock, a rod secured to one end of said bolt and adapted to be projected through the opening in the hook and the flange of the body to prevent rotary movement of the body when the bolt is in its unlocked position.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base comprising a ring provided with an opening, a body member having an outwardly extending flange adapted to engage over said ring, said flange being provided with an opening to register with the opening in the ring, a lock within the body, a sliding bolt within the lock, and a rod secured to one end of the bolt and adapted to be projected through the openings in the ring and the flange of the body to prevent rotary movement of the body when the bolt is in its unlocked position.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base comprising a ring having an inwardly extending annular flange formed thereon, opposite hook members formed integral with the ring, a body rotatably mounted upon the base and provided with a flange extending downwardly over said base and having an opening formed therein, inwardly extending lugs formed integral with the flange on the body and adapted to be engaged by the hooks on the base, means for holding said hooks into engagement with the lugs, a lock arranged within the body, a sliding bolt within the lock and means secured to the bolt and adapted to project through the openings in the body and the flange of the base to prevent rotary movement of the body when the bolt is in its unlocked position.
In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
