METHOD OF SECURING THROAT-BRAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9,1913.
Application fiIed May 2, 1913. Serial No. 765,180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN F. Gnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Method of Securing Throat- Braces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved method of securing throat braces to boilers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the brace may be quickly and accurately secured in position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the brace secured permanently in posit-ion.
In the usual method of securing throat braces to boilers a tap is used for threading the holes in the flue sheet and also the brace. The tapping is done from the fire box side of the flue sheet and it is hard to secure an exact alinement between the aperture in the flue sheet and the threaded opening in the brace. A considerable time is also necessary in this method as after the tap has been threaded into the flue sheet and brace it is necessary to turn the same out again before the bolt can be screwed into position.
It is the object of the present method to overcome these faults and in the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the boiler shell, 2 the throat sheet and 3 the flue sheet of an ordinary locomotive boiler.
The numeral 4 indicates a throat brace of ordinary construction and in carrying out my method a tap 5 is used for threading the brace and when the brace has been threaded the tap is left therein and the operating end 6 which is squared is inserted through the aperture in the flue sheet 3. The brace is temporarily held in position by means of the bolts 7 and by applying a wrench or other device to the squared end (3 of the tap the same is then turned out through the flue sheet and threading simultaneously the aperture therein. As will be noted the tap tapers from the threaded end to the operating end. After the tap is removed the brace is permanently secured to the boiler sheet by means of the rivets 8 and a bolt 9 is then threaded through'the aperture in the flue sheet and into the brace.
From the above it will be seen that I have provided a quick means of attaching the brace to the boiler and one in which the threaded aperture in the flue sheet and the threaded opening in the brace are in exact alinement and the bolt 9 can be easily threaded therein.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The herein described method of securing throat braces to boilers consisting of primarily threading a throat brace and leaving the tap therein, temporarily attaching the brace to the boiler with the operating end of the tap disposed through the aperture of the flue sheet, and then withdrawing the tap from the brace through the sheet aperture and threading the aperture during the withdrawal of the tap.
2. The herein described method of securing throat braces to boilers consisting of primarily threading a throat brace and leaving the tap therein, temporarily attaching the brace to the boiler with the operating end of the tap disposed through the aperture of the flue sheet, then withdrawing the tap from the brace through the sheet aperture and threading the aperture during the withdrawal of the tap, and finally permanently securing the brace to the boiler and threading a bolt through the aperture and brace.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FRANCIS GERO.
