BUTTONHOLE-SCISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
' Application filed April 7, 1913. Serial No. 759,569.
To all whom it'rpay concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIPPE FRIEoEIiIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, have inventeda new and useful Buttonhole-Scissors, of which the following is a specificatio The present invention appertains to button hole scissors, and particularly to an improved adjusting device therefor to limit the closing movements of the cutters or blades so that buttonholes of predetermined sizes may be cut. j
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved adjustable stop carried by the shank of one blade to contact with the other shank, whereby the closing movements of the blades may be adjusted to a nicet without the liability of variance in the size of the button hole cut after the stop has been once set.
It iii-"also the object of the present invention to provide a deviceof the character-indicated, which shall becomparatively simple, durable, compact and inexpensive in construction, as well as eflicient, convenient and serviceablein its use,' t-he same being resides in the combination and arrangement of arts and in the details of construction ereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of permitting the adjustment ofthe stop. ter bore or socket 6 forming a shoulder or' seat 7; The "bore proper o is relatively long, while the counter bore or socket 6 is relatively short, although the particular proportions are of no great moment.
The stop proper has been designated by the numeral 8, the same being threaded through the bore 5, and having aslot or kerf 9 extending from its inner end to a point directly short of its outer end,.the slot .9 extending completely between the opposite sides of the stop 8. The inner end of the slot .9, however, is contracted by a pair of lips '10 inturned from the inner endsof the respective leaves or sections of the stop 8. ',The stop 8 is preferably of a length slightly longer than the bore 5 proper, it being noted that the inner end of the stop 8 is adapted to contact with the enlargement 4 of the respective shank'2.

bore or socket 6, and is-provided with the inner recess 12. The plug 11 is further provided with an extension 13, projecting bodies a flat tongue 15 taking into the slot 9 and'having a knob 16 at its inner end working snugly between the sides or walls of the slot 9, while the tongue itself works snugly ,between the lips 10, so that when the tongue and st p tl16 separated or moved apart suificiently, the knob 16 will engage the lips 10 and will thus-prevent the. stop and tongue from separating, unless the tongue is moved laterally out oi engagement with the slot 9. Thus, it will be noted that the tongue may be readily moved into and out of engagement with the stop 8, by inserting it or removing it laterally into or out of the slot 9, the tongue and stop, however, beingprevented from separating longitudinally.
The tongue 15 is provided with a collar or circular enlargement 17 at its butt or outer end, which fits snugly within the recess 12 of the plug. A square or noncircular portion 18 projects outwardly from the collar or enlargement 7, while a stem or shank 19 projects outwardly from the portion 18, and has a head or thumb piece 20 secured to its outer end in any suitable manner, the head or thumb piece 20 being spaced slightly from the square portion or boss 18. The
stem or shank 19 passes through the non v circular opening 14 of the plug 11, the said opening being adapted to receive the noncircular portion 18 of the actuating memher so as to lock the actuating member against rotation Thus, when the actuating member is pressed or slid inwardly by means of the head 20, the head is adapted to seat against the extension of the plug, and the square portion 18 is simultaneously disengaged or withdrawn from the opening 14-, so that the actuating member is free to rotate.
A coiled wire compression spring 21 is disposed with the counter bore or socket (3, and is seated between the shoulder 7 and the collar 17 of the actuating member so that the spring normally tends to press the actuating member outwardly so that the square pprtion engages the square opening of the p u agai nst rotation. However, the actuating member is yieldingly held in normal or nonrotatable position, so that it may be con veniently. forced inwardly by the operator, in order that the actuating member may be rotated by hand.
It will be apparent that the foregoing parts may be readily manufactured, and assembled with or applied to the scissors. Thus, in applying the relative parts to the scissors, the stop 8 is preferably first thread-- ed into the bore 5 and only partially so, and then the spring 21 is preferably slipped into the socket 6 around the stop 8. The actuating member, with the plug 11 carried thereby between the collar 17 and head, is then positioned, the inner end of the tongue 15 "being inserted laterally into theslot 9 as will be apparent. The plug 11 is then threaded tightly into the socket 6, so that it will be held against accidental or casual displacement. The device will then be in condition for operation, the spring 21 ento thereby lock the actuating member gagingthe collar 17, and yieldingly sliding the actuating member into locked position.
In use, as above noted, the actuating member will be normally pressed outwardly so that the portion 18 thereof engages within the opening 141 of the plug to thereby lock the actuating member against rotation, it being noted that the tongue 15 is flat and fits snugly within the slot 9 of the stop to prevent the stop from rotating unless the actuating member is rotated. Thus, the stop and actuating member are adapted to slide longitudinally relative to each other, but are constrained from rotation with respect to each other. To adjust the stop 8, it is merely necessary to press the head inwardly, or against the plug, which will withdraw the portion 18 of the actuating member from the opening 14 of the plug, and as a consequence, the actuating member is free to rotate. Then, by rotating the actuating memher, the stop 8 will be rotated, and may thus be screwed inwardly or outwardly to the position desired, the stop 8 being made to travel longitudinally while theactuating member is merely rotated. After the stop has been positioned as desired, the head20 is released, so that the spring 21 will again press the collar 17 outwardly to lock the squared portion or boss 18 within the opening14, of the plug. The enlargement 4: of the respective shank is preferably-provided with asocket or recess 22 .in its inner end into which the inner end of the stop 8 is engaged or seated so as to limit. the closing movements of'the blade or cutters 1, it be- I ing noted that by adjusting he stop 8, various sizes of button holes may be out. There will be no liability of the stop to loosen, which would result in the variance in thesizes'of the button holes cut, it being noted that the stop 8 is normally locked against rotation. It is to be observed, also, that when the stop 8 is projected inwardly sufliciently, so that the inner end reaches the inner end of the bore 5, the lips 10 will en gage the knob 16 of the tongue 15 so as to prevent any further movement of the stop, which will prevent the stop from becoming accidentally detached, which'might otherwise result from carelessness on the part of the operator.
It is to be understood that the improved stop is not only applicable to button hole scissors but may be applied to other devices wherein two members or parts are movable to and from each other, as will be understood.
Having thus described the invention, whatis claimed as new is 1. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, a stop in threaded engagement with one member to contact with the other, an actuating memiber, having limited sliding movements and slidably engaging the stop to turn therewith,
and means for locking the actuating member against rotation when slid to a predetermined position.
2. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, a stop in threaded engagement with one member to contact with the other, and having a longitudinal slot extending from its outer end,
'an actuatingmember rotatably carried by the aforesaid member having limited sliding movements, the actuating member em bodying a tongue working within the said slot, and means for locking the actuating member a ainst rotation when slid to a predetermined position.
3. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, a stop in threaded engagement with one member to contact with'theother, and having a longitudinal kerf extending from its obter end to a point short of its inner end, an actuating member rotatably carried by the first mentioned member and having limited sliding movements, the actuating member including a flat tongue engaging within the said kerf and having a knob at its inner end'fitting snugly within the kerf, the actuating member having inturned lips at itsouter end between which the tongue.is snugly disposed, and means for locking the actuating member when slid to a predetermined position.
4. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, one member having a transverse bore, a stop threaded through the bore and projectable from the inner end of the bore, a member engaged to the aforesaid shank at the outer end of the bore, and an actuating -member rotatably carried by the said member and having lim ited sliding movements relative thereto, the actuating member having a portion in slidable engagement with the stop, and the said member and actuating member having portions adapted to interlock when the actuating member is slid to a predetermined position. 5. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, one member having a transverse bore, a stop threaded through the bore to contact with the other member, a'plug engaged within the outer end of the bore, an actuating memberrotatably carried by the plug and having limited sliding movements; the actuating member being slidably engaged with the stop to turn therewith, and the plug and actuating member having cooperating non-circular portions adapted to interlock when the actuating member is slid to a predetermined position. 6. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, one member having a transverse bore, a stop threaded through the bore to contact with the other member, a plug engaged within the outer end of the bore, and anactuatin member passing through the plug and sligably connected to the stop to turn therewith, the actuating member having a non-circular portion, the plug having a non-circular opening "to receive the said non-circular portion when the actuating member is slid outwardly, and the, actuating member being provided with a head seatable against the plug tuating member is slid inwardly.
7. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, one member a stop threaded the said opening and having a stem passing through the said opening, a head carried by the outer end of the said stem to seatagainst the plug, and a coiled. wire spring seated within the counter bore to cooperate with same outwardly to engage the non-circular portion with the said opening of the plug.
8. In combination with a pair of members movable toward each other, one member havthe outer end of the said bore, a stop threaded through the aforesaid bore, to contact with the other member, a plug engaged within the counter bore, the plug having an inner recess and a non-circular opening extending from the recess to the outer end, an actuating member embodying a tongue slidably engaging the stop to turn therewith and having a collar at the butt end-of the tongue fitting snu ly within the recess of the plug, the col; lar aving a non-circular portionprojecting outwardly therefrom and the said portion having a stem projecting through the said opening in the plug, a head secured to the outer-end of the stem and adapted toseat seated within the counter bore and engaging tion into engagement with the said opening in the plug. v
