To all 'whomt may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. HoUsLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Las Vegas, in the county of Clark and State of Nevada, have invented a new and useful Flue Connection for Fire-Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved method of securing flues to fire sheets, and the objects of t-he invention are to positively prevent lealage and avoid the operation of expanding the flues.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention and referring thereto, Figure 1 is al perspective view in section. Fig. 2 is a cross section on line @c2-x2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a Side elevation of the bushing, partly in section. Fig, 4 is a vertical section showing a modified form of the invention.
l designates the fire sheet formed with a perfo-ration 2 and having a deep, annular groove on one side lying close to and concentric with the orifice 2. The inner wall of the groove is smooth, its lower wall is smooth and its outer wall is threaded, as at 3. lVithin the annular groove is a bushing 4, shown in detail in Fig. 3, which is preferably constructed of copper and at its lower end has a flange 5 which rests flatly against the bottom wall of the annular groove referred to, the outer portion of the flange lying in an enlarged space 5FL formed in the annular groove at. the end of the flue 7. The formation of the said annular groove leaves a circular ring portion 6, which ring portion is surrounded by the bushing 4, the smooth inner walls of the bushing 4 closely fitting the smooth, outer wall of the ring 6. The flue 7 has a threaded end 8 which is screwed into the threads 3, the inner end of the flue 7 tightly abutting the flange 5 of the bushing 4 and the inner smooth wall of the flue 7 closely fitting the outer wall of the bushing 4, so that when the fiue 7 is screwed tightly into place the metal of the bushing 4 is, owing to its relative malleability, forced into intimate contact with the adjacent wall of the groove at all points and thus acts as a. gasket to positively and permanently seal the joint between the flue and lire sheet and thus absolutely prevent leakage.
Instead of screwing the liuc directly into the sheet, said flue may be connected to the bushing as indicated in Fig. 4 by a coupling or collar 9 and nipple 7 the nipple 7 screwing into the sheet, the collar 9 screwing onto the nipple and the flue 7 screwing into the collar, the construction being otherwise as above described. In this case, the nipple 7 and collar 9 form an extension of the flue and in fact, constitute a part of the flue as far as the operation is concerned, and when the terni flue is herein used, it covers any extension thereof such as the nipple and collar described.
That I claim is:
A fire sheet having a perforation and provided with an annular groove around the perforation, the outer wall of said groove being threaded, a flue having external threads fitting the threads of the outer wall and forming a longitudinal space in the annular groove along the flue and an enlarged space at the end of the flue, a bushing with its inner face bearing against the inner wall of said annular groove and its outer face bearing against the inner face of the flue thereby filling said longitudinal space, said bushing having an outwardly directed fiange which completely fills the said enlarged space between the end of the flue, and the outer, inner, and bottom walls of said groove.
