Be it known that I, ORTON GnRUsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Ends, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. n

This invention relates to suspender-ends.

The object of the invention is to provide a suspender-end in which each of the buttonstraps will be formed of a separate piece of material, but which, in the assembled device, will have both the appearance and strength of a suspender-end in which the two button-straps are formed of the same piece of material; further, to provide a single means for connecting together the adjacent ends of the two buttons-straps and for connecting said straps to the vcast-off; to provide a cast-off adapted to fold about the adjacent ends of the button-straps; to provide a common means for connecting together the two button-straps, for connecting the button-straps to the cast-oft and for connecting the folded over portion of the castoff to the body portion thereof; to provide a cast-off having its reinforcing strip formed' integral therewith and adapted to be folded about the adjacent ends of the button-straps; and further, to provide an auX- iliary support which will be secured to the cast-off by the same means by which the button-straps are secured thereto.

With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features and in certain combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter to be described, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings7 Figure l is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken on the line w .f of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a det-ail view of a slightly modified form of cast-off; Figs. 4 and 5 show slightly modified arrangements of the buttonstraps; Fig. 6 is a sectional view, showing a slightly modified form of the invention, and Fig-7 is a complete sectional view including the construction shown in Fig. 3.

In Figs. 1 and 2 of these drawings I have shown one embodiment of my invention and have shown the suspender-end l as comprising two button-straps 2, each of which is formed of a separate piece of material.

These straps have their outer ends flat to receive the buttonholes 3 and are folded upon themselves for a portion of their length, as shown at l, to form a cord-like structure. This folded portion of the but-- ton-strap preferably begins at a point slightly beyond the inner end of the buttonhole and extends, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to a point near the inner end of the button-strap, the inner end being flat. The fiat inner ends of the button straps overlap and are connected one to the other and are secured to the cast-oft' 5 in any suitable manner, the same means being preferably employed to connect together the overlapping ends of the button-straps and to connect the button-straps to the cast-off. In the present instance, the cast-off 5 comprises a flexible loop of leather having one end folded about the adjacent ends of the button-straps, as shown at 6, and secured to the body portion vof the cast-off, a single connecting means being preferably employed for connecting together the adjacent ends of the buttonstraps, for connecting the button-straps to the cast-off and for connecting the folded over portion of the cast-off to the body portion thereof. This connecting means preferably comprises one member, 7, of a head-and-socket fastening device, the other member, 8, of which is connected to the other end of the loop forming the castoff 5. This end of the cast-off is adapted to be extended through a connecting member 9 carried by the suspender-strap 10, after which the two members of the fastening device are connected together, thereby securing the suspenderend to the suspenderstrap. Thus it will be apparent that the overlapped adjacent ends of the two buttonstraps are entirely concealed within the folded over portion of the cast-off, thereby giving the two button-straps the appearance of being formed from an integral piece of material; further, that the manner of connecting the two buttonstraps together and securing the same to the cast-oftl is such as to give the same a large degree of strength, thus causing the suspenderfend comprising the two separate straps to resemble, both in appearance and in strength, the suspenderend comprising integral button straps. In addition to connecting together the overlapping ends of the button-straps, securing the button-straps to the cast-off and securing the overlapping portion of the cast-off to the` body portion thereof the member 7 of the fastening device also serves to connect to the cast-off one end of a reinforcing strip 11, the other end of which is secured to the cast-off by the other member 8 of the fastening device.

While I have shown, in Figs. 1 and 2, and have above described one embodiment of my invention, it will be obvious that many al terations could be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention. In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown the cast-off 5 as having a reinforcing strip 12 formed integral with one end thereof. Thus, the reinforcing strip is folded about the adjacent ends of the button-straps together with the end of the cast-oha and is then secured to the cast-off by the two members of the fastening device in substantially the same manner as above described. When the cast-olf shown in Fig. 3 is folded into the shape shown in Fig. 7 the reinforcing strip 12 will extend from the end of the foldedover port-ion, instead of being fastened to the rear of the body portion in the rear of the button straps as shown in Fig. 2.

In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown the button-straps 2 as having their folded portions 4 extending to the inner ends thereof and as having these inner ends abut-ting instead of overlapping. The ends are secured together by suitable fastening devices, which, in the present instance, consists of Vak toothed clip 13 adapted to be clamped upon the adjacent ends of the two button-straps, thus securing the same firmly together. The end of the cast-off 5 is folded about the adjacent ends of the button-straps and the fastening device 13 and is secured to the body portion of the cast-off at a point' immediately above the fastening device 13, thus securing the suspender-end to the castofl' and concealing from view the joint connecting the two button-straps.

In Fig. 5 I have shown an arrangement somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 4, but have shown the adjacent ends of the two button-straps as secured together by a clip 14 having the form of a double pointed tack, the points of which are driven through the adjacent ends of the button-straps and clenched. The button-straps are then secured to the cast-olf in the same manner as in Fig. 4.

In Fig. 6 I have shown a form of the device substantially similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but provided with an auxiliary supporting strap 15 which is secured at its upper end to the cast-off and is provided at its lower end with a suitable clasp or garmentv supporter. This auxiliary strap may be secured to the cast-off in any suitable manner, preferably by extending the fastening device 7 by means of which the buttonstraps are secured to the cast-oft', through theauxiliary strap, and, in the present instance, I have shown this strap as forming a continuation of the reinforcing strip 11 of the cast-off and extending through an aperture 1G in that portion of the cast-oif which extends about the button-straps, but, obviously, the strap could be formed separately from the reinforcing strip if such a construction should be desirable.

Thus, it will be seen that my invention is capable, not only of wide modification, but also of combination with numerous other clements, all of which combine to produce a suspender-end which is capable of being manufactured from small pieces of material or leather scraps, and which, in its c0111- pleted condition, has the same strength and the same finished appearance of the suspender-end in which the connected parts are formed of a single piece of material, the points of connection, in each instance, being concealed by the folded over portion of the cast-off.

While I have shown and described certain modifications of my invention it will be obvious that it is capable of still further modiication, and, I, therefore, wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, except as defined by the scope of the appended claims, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a suspender-end, a iexible cast-off comprising a body portion having its lower end folded upon itself, two button straps flexible throughout their length and each folded upon itself for a portion of its length, said button straps having their adjacent ends overlapping and comiected one to the other within the folded-over lower end of said body portion, and a fastening device to connect said folded-over lower end to said body portion and to retain the connected ends of said button-straps within the folded-over lower end of said body portion, said body portion also having its upper end port-ion bent downward in front of the folded-over lower end portion thereof, connected to said body portion and serving both to connect the cast-off to the suspender and to conceal from view the upturned lower end and its fastening device.

2. In a suspender-end, the combination, with a cast-off comprising a body portion having its lower end folded upon itself and its upper end bent downward and arranged to extend in front of the folded-over lower end thereof, and two button-straps iexible throughout their length and having their adjacent ends secured within the folded-over lower end of said body portion, of a reinforcing strip secured to the folded-over lower end of said body portion, extending along the inner surfaces of said body p0rtion and said upper end portion and having it-s outer end secured to said upper endportion at a point removed from said body portion.

3. In a suspender end, the combination, with a cast-off comprising a body portion having its lower end folded upon itself and its upper end bent downward and arranged to extend in front of the folded-over lower end of said body portion, and two buttonstraps flexible throughout their length and having their adjacent ends overlapping and arranged within the folded-over lower end of said body portion, of an auxiliary supporting-strap having one end arranged between said body portion and the folded-over lower end thereof, and a single fastening device for securing together the adjacent ends of said button-straps, for securing said button-straps to said body portion and for securing said auxiliary supporting strap to said body portion.

4. In a suspender-end, the combination, with two button-straps having Hat outer ends, each strap being folded upon itself for a portion of its length, of a cast-off having one end folded about the adjacent ends of said button-straps, a reinforcing strip for said cast-off having one end secured to said cast-olf at a point removed from said folded over portion thereof, said reinforcing strip having an extension extending through that portion of said cast-off which is folded about said button-straps, and means for securing said button straps to said cast-oft" and for securing' said reinforcing strip to said cast-Gif.
