CLAMPING DEVICE.
1 masas.
To a7? 207mm '25 may muro/vi .lie it known that l, ,ltoru'i-:o A. lli-1Auln'f'rrn, a citivzen ol the United States, residing at thippeu'a Falls. in the county of Chippewa. and Slate ol ll`iscousiu, have invented certin new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The tool oi the present invention is designed particularly for clamping purposes, the main object in view being' to provide an eil'ective device capable oi clamping wire or similar encircling bands to articles requiring the saine.
'lhe simplicity of my construction is an :ulvantageous Jl'cature in its production, the aim beingr to so 'lorm the tool that the wire may be made into a clamp, then adjusted, and linally applied in proper manner.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the fol.- lowingr description and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing its application. Fig. 2 a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
In the preferred embodiment of my tool, as illustrated in the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion which is hollow -throughout the greater portion of its length, or tubular in form. The lower end of this body portion is preferably reduced as denoted by the reference character 2,
while its end is provided with a transverse groove 3 or concaved for a purpose hereinafter set forth. At opposite sides and substantially centrally et the same, the hollow body l is formed with longitudinally eX- tending slots 4 adjacent which, or near its upper end, are formed laterally projecting arms 5 constituting a finger grip for facilitating use of the tool.
Into the hollow body 1 extends a stretching rod 6 threaded at its outer end 7, which projects slightly beyond the end of the body l, to receive the adjusting nut 8 which is adapted to seat or bear against the end of Specification ofLctt-ers Patent.

thcbody in the performance of the stretchmg function. The lower or inner end portion ol the rod (l is provided with a transverse bore in which is inserted a pin or cross rod which projects through the lguiding slots 1.: and iorms the laterally extending wire engaging arms 9.
In the use of my invention, and describing' its clamping action in reference to making hose connections, or the like, a piece of doubled wire l0 of suitable length, is passed around the hose or article l1, the free ends olthe wire being brought up between the doubled or looped portion as shown in Figs. l and 2. The concaved end ot the tool is then laid against the doubled end of the wire, while the free ends of the latter are wrapped one or more times around the arms il carried by the stretching red G. By turning the nut S in one direction the rod 6 is pulled outwardly firmly drawing the ends of the wire through the loop formed by doubling and when enough pressure has been provided the tool is moved bodily in a lateral direction into a position substantially as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. The clamp is thus secured about the article and the free ends of the wire are slipped laterally oil' the arms 9 and cut the desired length.
One oi' the main points of advantage of my form of device is theease with which the ends of the wire may be disengaged from the arms of the stretching rods and it will be quite obvious that adjusting of the tool is quickly accomplished, requiring mainly the wrapping of the wire around the arms and adjustment ol the nut S to perform the desired result. The arms 9 coperatewith the slots l to guide the stretching rod 6 in its movement and also provide a connection of the parts of the tool.
Slight changes may be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit of the same and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A. tool of the class described comprising a hollow body portion having diametrically nopposing longitudinal slots formed intermediate its length, a stretching rod movable within the hollow body portion, laterally projecting wire engaging arms carried by the stretching rod and extending through the slots aforesaid, the arms coperating with the slots to guide tho stretohingrod,
.and :m adjusting nut threaded upon the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
