To all whom it may concern: g
Be it known that I, J OHN D. A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residinrr at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to washing machines and the object thereof is primarily to provide a simple and eflicient construction and arrangement of driving and reversing mechanism for the wringer, which mechanism is adapted to be driven by the driving connections for the agitator .of the washing machine.
Various features of advantage and utility in my construction will be apparent from.
the description hereinafter given.

For the purpose of a clear and definite disclosure of my invention I have herein shown and will hereinafter describe a machine representing one embodiment of my invention although it will be understood that changes may be made, partic-ularly'as to details, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and claims.
Referring to the machine herein shown a section on the line 5-5 of the washing machine comprises a washing receptacle 1 supported on legs 1 and containing any usual form of agitator (not shown) such as for instance that illustrated in Howe Patent No. 711,317 dated October 14, 1902, which also illustrates thesame general character of driving connections forthe agitator and as to which I make no claim herein. These driving connections consist of a reciprocating rack bar 2 adapted to mesh with the pinion 3 which issecured to the vertical shaft 4: of the agitator. This rack is pivotally connected at the point 2 with a crank arm or pitman 5 which is pivoted at its outer end to a bevel gear 6, which has two sets of gear teeth oneset 6t and another set 6 the former of which meshes with a pinion 7 formed in the present instance as an integral part of a wheel or pulley 8. This pulley is secured to a horizontal shaft 9 which is journaled in a bracket 10 Specification of Letters Patent.

mounted on the top of the washing receptacle. Thispulley is operated by a suitable prime moverwhich in the present instance is an electric motor 11 whose armature shaft has a small pulley 12 operatively connected with the pulley 8 by means of the belt 13. The gear wheel 6 is secured to a vertical shaft 14 which is journaled in the bracket 10 and which by preference and as shown is extended downwardly a comparatively considerable distance for a purpose hereinafter explained, the lower end being held in place by a bearing 15..
Upon the top surface of the washing receptacle I provide a support or platform 16 which is adapted-to support any suitable wringer such as that illustrated at 17 and the reversible driving connection or clutch mechanism therefor and also the electric motor hereinbeforejreferred to. As shown this support overhangs or projects beyond the sides of' the receptacle thereby providing aplace of attachment for the electric motor which depends therefrom as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the motor and the reversible clutch being in the same vertical plane,
one above the support and the other below.
The clutch consists, oftwo bevel gears18 and 19 connected together by a central portion 20 which in the present instance is. integral therewith. The hub portion of the gear 19 has an angular socket 19 adapted to receive the angular head 21 of a shaft 21 for driving the wringer. These bevel gears are journaled within a housing which isv divided centrally into two parts 22 and 23, the former of which is mounted upon and secured by means of its foot pieces or bracket .22 to an extension 10 of the bracket 10 which is itself secured to the support 16, the two sections or halves of the housing being clamped together by means of the screw bolts 245. By preference the foot pieces are adjustably secured to said bracket extension by the usual bolt and slot connection indicated at 22. Within the housing andbetween the two bevel gears is arranged a clutchconnector which is in the form of. a bevel pinion 25 secured to the inclined shaft 26 which is adapted to be shifted or oscillated in order that the bevel pinion may mesh with the one or the other of the two gears 18 and 19 or may be left in intermediate or neutral position out of engagement with either of these gears. This shaft 26 has, in the present instance, a bearing ..bracket 27 which is pivoted upon the depending shaft 1% of the gear wheel 6, withthe result that said shaft is pivotedin the line of the axis ofrotation of the wheel 6.

It will be understood that it is notessential that the shaft 14 be entended'down wardly to form a pivot for the inner end of the shaft 26 or that suchj a "shaft be pivoted below the gear wheel-=6, the I only'essential feature in this regard being that theshaft be pivoted in the line of the airisof rotation of the wheel 6 so that in i the different shifted positions of the shaft there shall be no clamping or binding between the gear wheel 6 and the pinion 28. When theparts'are the relative'position shownin Fig. 3which isa neutral position I of the shifter and pinion 25 the washing machine proper only will be operated and thefwrin ger will not be operated. However when-the shifter-is moved to one of the lateralholes 82"so as to bring the pinion 25 into mesh with one of the gears 18 and 19-,
the'wringer wili'be operated in one directionandif the shifter is moved to the other extreme position the pinion 25 -will be brought into mesh with the other bevel gear so as torot'atethe wring'er inthe opposite direction, it being understood that the in- I, lon 28 is always in mesh with the gear wheel 6 is always rotated in the same direc tion. The construction and arrangement of parts above described constitutes avery siinpie bnteifectivemech-anlsnr for the objects in view and a mechanism whichis moreover comparatively inexpensive and economical consequently of manufacture which are important considerations in machines of this character.
I claim; 1
l. The combination of a driving wheel r0- I tatable in a fixed plane and reversing driving connections comprising two rotatable ;members having the same axis ofrotation, and a shiftable device always in operative engagement with said driving wheel and adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the other of said members to connect the wheelwithone or the other thereof, said device being pivoted atone end in the axis of rotation of the wheel.
2. The combination of a driving wheel rotatable in a fixed plane and reversing driving. connections comprising two rotatable members having the same axis of rotation, and ashiftable device; always inoperative engagement with said driving wheel and adapted to be placed in engagement with one orthe other of said members to conne'ct the wheel with oneor the other thereof, said device comprising. a shaft pivoted at one end in the axis of rotation of said wheel, a pinion mounted on the shaft intermediate its length and arranged to cooperate with the wheel, and a wheel mounted on the'sha-ft near the other end thereof and arranged to co'ciperate with one or the other of such members. l
3. The combination of a driving member rotatable in a fixed plane and having a bearing shaft, reversing driving connections comprising two driven members arranged to rotate on the same axis, a bearing bracket pivoted on said" shaft, and a shiftabl'e' device supported by said bracket and adapted toswing at its enter end in substantial'ly the line of said axis of rotation, said device being in constant engagement with said driving member and adapted to be placed into engagement with one or the other ofsaid driven members 4. In a washing machine, the combination of a driving gear rotatable in a' fixed plane, and reversing driving connections comprising two members and a shift-able device including a rotatable member adapted to cooperate with one or the other of said members, a shaft on which said member is mounted and which is pivoted in the line of the axis of' rotation of said gear, and a pinion securedto said shaft and in mesh with the gear at all times. p 5; The combination of a driving member in the form of a bevel gear, a driving shaft, therefor, reversing driving connections comprising two opposed gears mounted to rotate on a common aids, and a shiftable device adapted to operate between the bevel gearand one or the other of the two opposed gears andcomprisiirg a driven shaft inclined to the driving shaft and pivoted thereto at driven shaft toward {its inner end and adapted to mesh with the bevel gear,;and a gear mounted on the driven shaft toward its outer end and adapted to mesh with one or the other of the two opposed gears.
6. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable drivingmember and reversing driving connections comprising two gears having opposed teeth and mounted to I rotate on 'a common axis, a shaft pivoted at one end, two pinions mounted thereon,;one in constant engagement with said driving member and the other adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the other of said two gears, and means for shifting said shaft. 7. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable driving member and reversing driving connections comprising two gears having opposed teeth, a shaft pivoted at its inner end in the line of the axis of rotation of said Qriving member, apinion at the outer end of such shaft adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the other of said two gears, and a second pinion on the shaft which is in engagement with said driving member. v
8. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable driving member and reversing driving connections comprising .twogears having opposed teeth and mounted to rotate on a common axis, a shaft, a bearing bracket therefor located at its inner end and pivoted in the line of the axis of rotation of said driving member and arranged to swing bodily on such axis, a pinion at'the outer end of such shaft adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the other of said two gears, and a second pinion in the shaft which pinion is in engagement with said driving member. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable driving member and reversing driving connections comprisingtwo gears having opposed teeth and mou'ntedto rotate on a common axis, a shaft, a bearing bracket therefor located at its inner end and pivoted in the line of the axis of rotation of said driving member and arranged to swing bodily on such axis, a pinion at the outer end of such shaft adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the'other of said two gears, a second pinion on the shaft which pinion is in engagement with said driving member, and a shifter engaging the outer end of said shaft.
10. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable driving member and reversing driving connections comprising two gears having opposed teeth, a shaft, a bearing bracket therefor located at its inner end and pivoted in the line of the axis of rotation of said driving member, a pinion at the outer end of such shaft adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the other of said two gears, a second pinion on the shaft whichpinion is; in engagement with said driving member, and a shifter engaging the 'outerendof' said shaft,.said two gearsbeing conneotedby a central cross shaft portion and-said shifter being ourved interme-i portion; 1, I i

In a washing machine, the combination 'of'a rotatable, driving member and re diatejits length. to accommodate said shaft -versing driving connections comprising two two gears, a second pinion on the shaft which pinion is in engagement with said driving member, a shifter engaging the outer end of said shaft, and means for normally holding the shifter in its operative relationship.
12. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable driving member and reversing driving connections comprising two gears having opposed teeth, a shaft, a bearing bracket therefor located at its inner end and pivoted in the line of the axis of rotation of said driving member, a pinion at the outer end of such shaft adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the other of said two gears, a second pinion on the shaft which pinion is in engagement with said driving member, a housing for said gears, and a shifter extending through said housing and operatively connected with the outer end of said shaft.
13. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable driving member and reversing driving connections comprising two gears having opposed teeth, a shaft, a bearing bracket therefor located at its inner end and pivoted in the line of the axis of rotation of said driving member, a pinion at the outer end of such shaft adapted to be placed in engagement with one or the other of said two gears, a second pinion on the shaft which pinion is in engagement with said driving member, a housing for said gears,
and a shifter extending through said housing and operatively connected with the outer end of said shaft, said shifter having means cooperating with the housing to prevent withdrawal of the shifter when the housing is in place.
14. In a washing machine, the combination of a rotatable driving member and reversing driving connections comprising two gears having opposed teeth, a shaft, a bearing bracket therefor located at its inner end and pivoted in the line of the axis of rotation of said driving member, a pinion at the outer end of such shaft adapted to be
