311 umtoz in any one of which the pin 60 of the weight 61 may be inserted, for holding the weight 61 in adjusted positions upon the arm 32. For instance, if the weight 61 is arranged adjacent the extreme" end of the arm 32, the arm 32 will lower more quickly than if the weight is adjusted closer to the pivot 29 of the lever 30.
projection 40 of I this case the lu ment plate just t in Fig. 3, in which case the gate may be reaches the end 63 of When one or the other of the cables 46 and 47 is pulled, by takin hold of the handle 57 or 58, the arm 32 o the lever 30 will be raised, while the short arm 31 will move toward the gate, thereby causing the lug or the link or rod 39 to move in the segmental slot 24, until the lug 40 the slot 24, that is, when the gate is in a closed posit-ion, and then when the bell crank lever 30 returns to its normal position owing to the gravitation of the weight 61, the lug 40 will engage the shoulder 64 of the segmental slot 24, thereby movin or rocking the segment plate 23 and with it the gate, throwing the same open as shown in Fig. 3. After the driver or rider has passed through the gate the cable upon the opposite side thereof may be pulled, in order to close the gate. In 40 moves in the slot 24 until it reaches t e end 66, and then as the long arm 32 returns to its normal position, the lug or projection 40 engages the shoulder 67, thereby ,rocking or moving the segment plate 23 back to its normal position, which closes the gate. In order to throw the gate open upon the side opposite to that above described, it is necessary to loosen the nuts 20 of'the sta les 19, and adjust the sege opposite to that shown opened toward the opposite side to that above described.
Secured to the lower bar 11 of the gate adjacent its free end is a bracket 68, and connecting the upper bar or rod 10 and the end bar or rod 12 are L-shaped brackets 69. Pivoted in the brackets 68 and 69 are the lowerand upper latch members 70 and 71, which are connected by the bar 72. The upper latch member is provided with an upwardly extending short arm 73 extending at right angles to the latch member. Connected to the short arm 73 is a wire or cable 74 passing over a pulley 75, with its rear end connected in an eye 76 of the long arms 32 'of'the bell crank lever 30; It will be seen that as the *bell crank lever is tilted upon its pivot, the latch members 70 and 71 Wlll be automatically raised out of engagement with their-keepers 7 and '8' of thepost 3. The latch members 0 and 71 are guided,
apertures 59,
position after once having been raised, and
as the bar 72 is connected to the latch member 70, the said latch member 70 is likewise prevented from returning to its normal position. After the latch members have been raised, which is accomplished upon the upward movement of the long arm 32 of the lever 30, the gate is free to be opened, and which is accomplished by the lug or projection 40 engaging the shoulder 64, as thelong arm 32 of the lever 30 turns to its normal position by the gravitation of the weight 61. When the gate is thrown closed, the lower end of the latch supporting device contacts with a lug 86, which tilts the device 81 upon its pivot withdrawing the shoulder 84 from the path of the upper latch mem er 71, and through the action of the spring 80, the latch members will again enga e their keepers 7 and 8. The lower end 0 the spring 83 may be connected to any one of t e eyes or hooks 88, whereby the action of the spring may be increased or decreased.
From the foregoing it is apparent that there has been devised'an eflicient and simple gate operating mechanism, which may be operated from elt-her side of the gate for opening the same, and one which has been found desirable and practical.
The invention having beenset forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In combination with a swinging gate provided at its hinged end with a segment plate provided with a segmental slot including a shoulder at each end, and a mechanism including a device working idly in said slot upon the initial actuation of said mechanism, said mechanism including a gravity actuating member to cause said device to engage one or the other of said shoulders to open the gate, the gate having connections with said mechanism and adapted to be actuated upon the initial actuation of said mechanism.
2. In combination with a swinging gate provided at its hinged end with a segment plate provided with a segmental slot including a shoulder at each end, and a mechanism including a device working idly in said slot upon the initial actuation of said mechanism, said mechanism including a. gravity actuating memberto cause said device to engage one or the other of said shoulders to open the gate; and a latch mechanism .on the gate having connections with said mechanism and adapted tobe actuated upon the initial actuation of said mechanism, and meaiisl for holding the latch mechanism actuated while the gate is open.
3. In combination with a swinging gate provided at its hinged end with a segment plate provided with a segmental slot includ-. ing a shoulder at each end, 'anda mechanism including a device working idlyv in said slot upon the initial actuation of said mechanism, said mechanism including a gravity actuating member to cause said device to engage one or the other of said shoulders to open the gate, and a latch mechanism on the gate having connections with said mechanism and adapted to be actuated upon the initial actuation of said mechanism, and means for holding the latoh'mechanism actuated while the gate -is open, and an element upon the latch post to trip said last named means to release the latch mechanism as the gate reaches the closed position. 7
