anism for typewriting machines and its ob-' ject generally statedis to provide improved mechanism of the character specified, and more specifically stated toprovide a reversible ztabula ting mechanism which while capable of use in the ordinary way for advancing the carriage to predetermined points in its leftward travel, is also adapt able for tabulating in the opposite direction whenever tabulating of this character, commonly called reverse tabulating, maybe more advantageousl employed.
To the above and tion consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
While my invention is adaptable to various styles of. t-ypewriting machines the.
preferred embodiment herein disclosed is applied to a No. 11 Remington machine and to the denominational tabu ating mechanism of said machine.
In carrying outthe invention in the present instance I substitute a novel two-part link for the usual rigid vertical link that connects the release-pinion lever-frame with the trainv of releasing devices in the base of the machine. The parts of said two-part link may be locked or held in fixed rela tionship and may also be operatively disconnected by key controlled devices so as at will to throw or switch the carriage re-' leasing mechanism into and out of the control of the usual denominational tabulator keys. When the parts of said link are operatively disconnected the carriage releasing mechanism is not effected when the tabulator keys are actuated and consequently an actuation of one of said keys will .merely project the associate tabulator stop into operative position without affecting the carriage which may then be pushed or impelled backward or to the right by hand until arrested in the position in part determined by A. SE13, citi-' other ends my inventhe projected stop, thus adapting the machine particularly for use in what is usually terme ing work.

As appears from Fig. 1 the main frame of the machine comprises a base 1, posts 2 and a top plate 3, above which are fixed track-ways 4 which through anti-friction balls 5 support a carriage 6 on which is mounted a platen 7. Cooperative with, the
front face of the platen are type bars 8 each mounted on a stationary hanger 9 and connected through a train of devlces comin commercial typewriting, list- 1 prising a link 10, a lever 11 and a second link 12 with a key lever 13. The key levers are fulcrumed on a stationary bar14 and each is provided with a restoring spring not shown). A releasablefeed rack 16 is secured to arms 17 fulcrumed at 18 on ears 19 liked to the rear part of the carriage. Said feed rack normally meshes with a toothed pinion 2O operatively connected with a pair of toothed escapement wheels 21 with which cooperates a dog 22 mounted on a rocker 23 connected by a link 24 with a crank arm 25 extending rearward from about the middle of a rock shaft 26. Near its ends the rock shaft is provided with rearwardly extending crank arms 27 from which depend arms or links 28 supporting a universal bar 29 which underlies the key levers 13 and is operative thereby to actuate the dog 22 and operate the esca ement devices to permit step-by-step movements of the carriage under the pull of the usual carriage motor or spring drum (not shown). The parts thus far described are common to the No. 11 Remington machine.
The tabulating mechanism with which etter feed a said machine is ordinarily provided com prlses a stop bar 33 mounted on arms 34 fixed to and extendmg rearward from the ,carriage, said bar being toothed to receive adjustable tabulator or column stops 35 with which coeperate a set of denominational stop levers 36 pivoted at 37 on a frame 38 secured to the main frame of the machine. The lower ends of said levels 36 are each provided with a key connection comprising a push rod 39 having at its front end a tabulator key 40 operative through the associate rod and stop lever 36 to project the stop proper at the upper end of said lever forward into the path of the column stops Restoring springs 41 restore the stop levers and their key connections when released to normal position. The tabulator keys are adapted also to actuate carriage releasing devices comprising a bail 42 having a stationary pivot 43. Secured to the cross bar of the bail is a slotted release bar 44 which is operative by collars 45 fixed to the push rods 39, said collars operating to swing the bail rearward. Links 46 connect the'bail with crank arms 47 depending from a rock shaft 48 and operate through said crank arms to turn the rock shaft when the tabulator keys are operated. A restoring spring 48 for the rock shaft 48 and connected parts is provided, said restoring spring having a stationary anchorage at one end and being connected at its other end to a crank arm 48 fixed to the rock shaft 4-8. The train of releasing devices in the base of the machine as thus far "described is of the usual construction, as is also the lever frame 49 arranged above the top plate and which carries the releasing pinion. Said frame is pivoted at 50 to a stationary bracket 51 on the top plate and carrying a releasing pinion 52 which normally underlies the feed rack 16 and is operative to lift the same from the feed pinion 20.
In order to operate the releasing pinion 1n the manner described, novel connectlons are provided between the lever frame 49 and the rockshaft 48. time consist essentially of a two-part link, the two parts being opcratively disconnectible at will so that the rock shaft when turned may be ineffective on the lever frame and releasing pinion. The upper part or member 53 of said two-part link is pivoted at 49- to the rear arm or portion of the lever frame 49 and depends therefrom, being oifset or curved forward and downward, its
lower depending end portion being to the rightof and parallel with the upper end portion of the lower part or member 54 of the two-part link. The part or member 54 is pivotally connected with an angular crank arm 56 fixed to the rock shaft 48. The pivotal connection comprises av lateral pin 55 on the angular crank arm 56, which pin Said novel connecrear post 2 by engages in a hole in the lower rearwardly curving end of the link part 54. A fiat spring 57 secured to the side of the crank arm 56 overlies the end portion of the link 54 and prevents its accidental detachment from said pin. The two link- parts 53 and 54 are slidably connected. so that their relationship may be varied, the slidablc connection comprising, as most clearly appears in Figs. 3 and 4, a pair or plurality of headed shouldered screws 58 spaced apart and secured to the part 54 and engaging with elongated vertical slots 59 in the lower portion of the part 53. The construction is such that the parts 53 and 54 may have a relative up and down sliding movement in respect of each other but are prevented from becoming separated or detached from each other by the screw and slot connection between them, although so far as effective operation is concerned they may be said to be disconnected when such relative sliding takes place, as will be clear from what follows.
Normally the relationship between the two parts 53 and 54 is maintained fixed or set and they operate as a single part or link, this maintenance and mode of operation be ing effected bydevices comprising, as appears clearly from Figs. 3 and 4, a laterally disposed socket piece or device 60 secured to the lower portion of the member 53 and provided with a tapering bore 61 extending through the arm 53 and whose inner end normally registers with an opening 62 in the upper end of the link part 54. A horizontally arranged pin or connecting device 63 extends through the bore 61 and hole 62, its innerend which is pointed to promote readiness and ease of engagement projecting beyond the outer face of the part 54. The outer or right-hand end of the pin 63 .is bent laterally and engages in an opening 65 secured to the pin 63 extends along it and terminates at the opposite face of the crank arm, the end of the spring coeperating with the laterally bent endof the pin to prevent detachment of the pin from the crank arm, although the'construction permits such detachment to be effected when desired by a flexing of the spring. The crank arm 64 is provided at its upper end with a hub portion 66 which fits over the rear end portion of a forwardly extending rock shaft 67 andreceives a screw 68 (Fig. 1) by which the crank arm is secured to said shaft. The
rock shaft 67 at its rear end bears in a plate 69 which is secured to the right-hand screws 70. The forward end portion of said rock shaft bears in a journal or hub 71 fixed to and projecting. forward from a. lateral plate 72 which is secured by screws 73 to the right-hand front post 2.
The rock shaft 67 projects forward through vice or member 75, the hub being secured in place by a screw 76. The arms of the rocker project oppositely from its hub and terminate in keys or buttons 77 and 78 which are preferably provided with suitable indicating marks or devices. In the present instance the right-hand key 77 is marked Regular, and the left-hand key 78 is marked Listing. It will be obvious that.
by pressing the keys 77, 78 in alternation the rock shaft 67willbe rocked to and fro, causing the pin 63 to engage with and connect or lock together the parts 53 and 54 or to be withdrawn rightward partly through the socket piece as in Fig. 4 so as to disconnect said parts.
Detent devices are provided for maintaining the rock shaft 67 and connected parts set in either of the positions to which they may be adjusted. Said detent devicescomprise a spring plate 79 provided with a hub 80 secured to the rock shaft 67 in rear of the plate 72. The spring plate extends rightward behind the plate 72 and terminates in stop lugs 81 and 82 which are adapted to cooperate with the screws 73 to arrest the spring plate and limit the turning movements of the rock shaft 67 In order to hold the rock shaft after it has been thus arrested by the stop devices, a hole or opening 83 is provided in the spring detent plate 79 which cooperates with rounded bosses or projections 84 and 85 on the rear face of the plate 72. The inherent spring in the plate 79 permits it, during the turning back and forth of the rock shaft 67, toyield and be forced or cammed back by the rounded bosses 84 and 85, permitting disengagement of the hole 83 from .either of said bosses. But as soon as the hole comes in register with one of the bosses the plate snaps over the boss which maintains it and the associate parts locked or set. The hole and cooperating bosses are so arranged that this snapping over and locking of 'the parts takes place at the end of the to and fro movements as determined by the engagement of the stop lugs 81 and 82 with the screws 73. Thus when the stop 82 is operative the boss 85 is in cooperation with the hole 83. Also the boss 84 may engage at this time with the outer face of the stop lug 81 providing additional devices to prevent movement of the locked parts.
Referring briefly to the operation of the invention it will be understood that with -the parts set as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, an actuation of one of the tabulator keys 40- will verse tabulating operation just train of connections will turn the rock shaft 48 and swing the crank arm 56 downward and rearward. This downward and rearward movement of the crank arm will be transmitted to the two-part link ,53 and 54, the parts of which at this time are operatively connected or locked together by the pin 63. Consequently the two-part link will operate as a single rigid piece at this time and will move downward and rearward, the connecting pin 63 participating in this movement and swinging downward and also slightly rearward about its pivotal point of connection with the crank arm 64 as a center, so as not to hamper the movement of the link. The lowering of the two-part link will swing the lever.-fran1e"49 on its pivot 50 and cause the pinion 52 to engage the rack 16 and lift it out of connection with the feed pinion 20, thus permitting the carriage to bedrawn freely toward the left until arrested by the engagement of the proximate columnstop with the projected denominational stop lever. 'It will be seen that a tabulating operation at this time is essentially the same as that with the ordinary denominational tabulating mechanism of the machine. I
When it is desired to cut out, switch or withdraw the carriage releasing devices from the control of the tabulator key or ke s,
the operator presses the Listing key 8, causin the rocker 75 to swing from the Fig. 3 to the Fig. 4 position and withdrawing the connecting or locking pin or device 63 from the hole-62 and part way out of the tapering bore 61. Thus the link'parts 53 and- 54 are operatively disconnected so that if now the-tabulator key 40 be actuated it will have the effect of proj ectingtheassociate denominational stop lever 36 in the usual of operating aftabulator key at this time will be to project the associate stop lever 36;
Holding the tabulator key pressed in, the operator next pushes the carriage toward the right until it is arrested by the proximate column stop contacting with the projected stop "lever 36. Thereupon the tabulater key is released, the parts including the link member 54 returning to normal position and the carriage being held in the arrested position by the esca ement devices which remain constantly e ective durin the reescribed.
Obviously, if the carriage at this time were not connected with its escapement devices it might move leftward one or more spaces if the operator should lessen the rightward pressure against said carriage before fully releasing the tabulator key. Or, on the other hand, under such circumstances even if the tabulatorkey were released properly the carriage might move a letter space rightward from the arrested position as a result of the re-adjustment of the escapement devices among themselves on re-connecting with the carriage. In any case care and time would be required to maintain the carriage in the arrested position at the end of a tabulating movement in'the reverse direction if the carriage while being moved back was disconnected from the escapement devices. Reverse tabulating is convenient in listing operations as the operator after writing one of the items in the list merely actuates the proper tabulator key and operates theline spacing handle of the machine, concurrently pulllng the carriage toward the right until it is again arrested. Such arrest brings the carriage into position for writing the next item on the list under the item previously written. Considerable time is thereby saved since if tabulating in the usual way the operator would, after writing in one item,pu ll the carriage rightward to thelimit of its-movement and then actuate the tabulator key, causing the carriage to run toward the left until arrested, thus resulting in an unnecessary repetition of movement which is avoided by reverse tabulating in the manner described.

My present improvements are simple in construction and may be applied to existing typewriting machines without materially altering the usual construction thereof and without affecting the use of the tabulating mechanism in the ordinary way when desired.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new and desire by Letters Patent, is 2-- 1. Ina typewriting machine, the combination of tabulating mechanism comprising a key, carriage releasing devices comprisin a two-part link, the two parts of said link to secure being arranged so as to afford relative -move-- During such restoring movement effective on said two-part link for at will operatively connecting and disconnecting the link parts and throwing said releasing devices into and out of the control of the tabulator key.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carria e at predetermined points in either direction of its travel, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts vof said link being slidably connected, and key operated means effective on said two-part link for at will throwing said releasing devices into and out of the control of a tabulator rey. v
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices comprisin a two-part link, the two parts of said lin being connected by a screw and slot connection, and key operated means effective on said two-part link for at will throwing said releasing devices into and out of the control of a tabulator key.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled denominational tabulating mechanism efi'eetive to arrest the carriage at predetermined points in either direction of its travel, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link one of the link' parts being provided with a plurality of slots and the other link part belngprovided with a plurality of headed shouldered screws cooperative with said slots, and key operated means effective on said two-part link for at will throwing said releasing devices into and out of the control of all of the tabulator keys.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts of said link being relatively movable, and key controlled means for at will maintaining the link parts in set relationship with each other during tabulating operations.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at redetermined points in either direction 0 its travel, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts of said link being capable of relative movement during tabulating operations, and key controlled means for at will preventing relative movement between the link parts during tabulating operations.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points in either direction of its. travel, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts of said link being slidably connected, and key con-,
trolled means for locking the two parts of -said link in fixed relationship.

In a typewriting machine, the combination'of key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points in either direction of its travel, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts of said link being slidably connected, and a key controlled locking pin engageable at will with the two parts of said link to maintain them in fixed relationship during tabulating operations.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a key QQLltrolled. tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts of said link being connected so as to afford" relative movement between them, and key controlled locking means for fixing the relationship between the parts of, said link, said means being adapted to operatively disconnect the link parts.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mecha* nism effective-to arrest the carriage at redetermined points in either direction 0 its travel, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts of said link being connected so as to afiord relative movement between them, and a locking pin engageable with openings in said link parts to maintain said parts in set relationship, said' pin being movable to inoperative position to operatively disconnect said parts.

In a typewriting. machine, the combination of a key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points in either direction of its travel, carriage releasing devices comprising a two-part link, the two parts of said link being connected so as to afi'ord relative movement between them, a locking device for said link parts, and key controlled connections to said device for moving it into and out of operative position, said connedtions comprising a rock shaft extending'to the front of the machine, and a rocker connected to said shaft and provided with a plurality of keys.

In a typew'riting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism; carriage releasing devices; and key controlled means for at will throwing said releasing devices into and out of the control of the tabulator keys, said means comprisinga locking device, key controlled connections to said device for moving it into and out of operative position, said connections comprising a rock shaft extending to the front of the machine, and a rocker connected to said shaft and provided with a plurality of keys, said means further including detent devices connected to said rock shaft and-comprising a detent plate provided with a hole and a plurality oat stop devices, and stationary stop devices and projections cooperative respectively with the stop devices on said plate and with the hole therein.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with tabulating stopdevicescomprising a key and efiective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points in either direction of its travel; a carriage releasing device;
connections between said device and said key, said connections comprising a two-part link, and link controlling means including a pin engageable with openings in the link parts, acrank arm connected to said pin, a rock shaft supporting saidcrank arm, a
finger keys connected to said rock shaft; and detent devices for maintaining said rock shaft and connected parts set in the positions to which it may be moved by the opv eration of said plurality of finger keys.
