UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE:
HUGH J. ncome, or knnroce, IDAHO.
ELEVATOR-BUCKET.
To all whomit may oomern;.-..
Be .it known that.I,.HUoHr J. MAcnnzn a citizen of ;the. ..Unite(t States, .residingi at Kellogg, the county of ',Shoshone. and State of Idaho, have. invented newzamdvuse t'ul Improvements ,inElevatorrBuckets, of
which tbei'ollowing-is a specification-1 The present invention. has. relation .to buckets- .designedto be :attachedtobelts and need for elevating material. and hasfor its objectto supply a renewable lip or-edge, whereby the life of the bucket is prolonged;
The invention relatesmore partlculanlyz-to the novel form of joint between the bucket and the renewable lip or edge .port-ion=avhere-. by a strong and durable;jointrisgolotained and one which will. admit ofstherenewable portion being easily and quickly removed or placed in position.
The invention consistsrof the .no'vcl features, details of construction -,and combination of darts, which hereinafter will be more particu arly set forth, illustrated in thesecomp'anying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims. f
Referring to the drawing, forming a. part of the application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an elevator bucket embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the bucket, a portion of the lip or renewable edge being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line m-w of Fig. 1'. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modification, showing the lip or renewable edge portion fitted to the inner side of the bucket.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of thedrawing, by the same reference characters.
The bucket is indicated by the reference numeral 1 and may be of any construction and has the upper portion of its front and sides rabbeted, as indicated at 2. The upper portion of the back is extended above the plane of the front and sides and a space 3 is left between the upper portion of the back and the adjacent ends of the reduced edge portions of the sides formed by rabbeting the same. The spaces 3 receive the rear bent ends 4: of the lip or renewable edge portion 5. The corner portions of the bucket are flattened, as indicated at 6, and the upper reduced edge portions of the parts 6 have openings 7 to receive lugs 8 Specification of Letters Patent. 7 "Patented N 4,-191 3,
673,553. Renewed July 7, 1913. Serial No. 777,800.
. formed upon the lip or renewable edge pori tion 5. v I The lipior renewable edge portion -5 of the' i bucket conforms to theioutline ofitheupper edge-portion of the .bucketand maybecorb structed ofsteel, cast. iron or. wrought metal 4 and is. made so as to resist wear. -.The.lower portion of the lip or renewable edge.5 israbs' beted ,and the reduced portion 9 thus formed fits-against the upper reduced edge "portion of the front and side walls of the bucket,so that the. innenand-outer: sides of the .lip and walls of the bucket are flush, as indicated most clearlypin .Figs -iiuand i. The side portions -.of the lip or rreinforcing edge 5 are bent inwardly -as. indicated at' A, andover lap the back of .the'bucketv and are secured thereto by. means of bolts 10.01 like fasten;- ings. .Theouterior front portion of the .lip or part 5 ism-held to. the bucket by the pro jections 8 fitting within the openings 7.
Vhen the bolts or fast-enings 10 are removedthe bent ends 4 of the part 5 may beinoved" upward and after clearing the spaces 3 the lip a or renewable edge portion 5 may be moved outward to cause the projections 8 to clear the openings 7 after which the part 5 is entirely clear or free from the bucket. When placing the part 5 in position the projections 8 are caused to ends 4 are moved downward into the spaces 3 and are secured by the bolts or fastenings 10, which may also be utilized as means for securing the bucket to the belt or other support.
In'the modification shown in Fig. 4 the lip or renewable edge 5 is fitted against the inner side of the bucket instead of against the outer side, as indicated in Fig. 2 and 3. the remaining portions being su stantiall the same. It is also understood that the interlocking projections 8 may be formed on either part, the other part being provided with an opening 7 to receive the projections.
The edge portion of an elevator bucket is subjected to the greatest wear and is soon worn away and instead of consigning the bucket to the scrap pile and replacing the same by anew bucket it is only necessary in accordance with this invention to replace the worn entering edge or lip by a new part, which may be. elfected at a nominal cost and without necessitating detachment of the enter openings 7 after which the bent bucket from the elevator belt or like-supthe invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I ,now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In combination with an elevator bucket, a renewable lip, or edge portion, therefor having a part overlappin the upper/edge portion of the walls of t e bucket; interlocking openings and integral projections between the overlapping parts of the lip and bucket; and other means for securing the lip to the bucket.
2. Inmmnbination an elevator bucket l1H\-- ing spaces formed between the back and the upper edge portions of the sides, a lip detachably fitted to the upper portion of the bucket and having portions fitting against the upper part of the back and entering the spaces formed between said back and the upper portions of the sides, and securing means between the said lip and the bucket.
3. In combination an elevator bucket having the upper portion of its front and sides rabbeted and having spaces between the back and the rabbeted portions of the sides, a renewable lip having its lower portion rabbeted to fit the rabbeted portions of the front and sides of the bucket and having its end portions bent and fitted against the upper part of the back and entering the spaces formed between said back and the rabbeted portions of the sides of the bucket. interlocking openings and integral projections between the front portion of the lip and the bucket, and securing means between the back of the bucket and the overlapping parts of the lip.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
