PUNCH-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1913.
Application filed November 25, 1912. Serial no. 733,392.
Totall whom it may concern Be it known that I, 'Onanrns A. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, and "a resident of the city of Blue Island, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punch- Pre'sse's, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in punch presses and has for its object the provision of a punch press so designed and constructed as to facilitate the ready employment of punches of various sizes.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, of a punch press embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a section taken on line a30a of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a section taken on line y-y. of Fig. 1, Fig. 4:, a face view of one of the punch members employed in the construction, and Fig. 5, a face view of an operating system of levers employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a suitable frame or bracket 1 having lugs 2 by means of which it may be secured to a wall or other suitable support. A rotatable head 3 is rotatably mounted in frame 1 by means of a central bolt 4:, as shown. This head 3 carries a plurality of punch members, each of said punch members comprising a reciprocatory plunger 5 mounted to reciprocate 4o vertically in a guide head 6 and provided with a stud screw 7 projecting through a guide slot 8 in the face of guide head 6, as shown, said stud screw serving to prevent rotation of said plunger in its guide head.
A spring 9 is secured to the face of each of the heads 6 and engages stud screw 7 to hold the corresponding plunger 5 in elevated or normal position.
The punch proper 10 is secured in the bottom of each of the plungers 5 and cooperates with a die 11 adjustably secured in a suitable seat 12 on the frame 1 by means of adjusting screws 13. A suitable stripper 10 is also provided for each of the plungers.
At its upper end, each of the plungers is provided with a circular knob or extension 14; which is adapted to swing into engagement with a jaw 15 as head 3 is rotated, said jaw being so shaped as to permit of the passage of the circular knob therethrough laterally but to interlock said knob for vertical movement thereof. This jaw is carried at the lower end of a :link 16 connected with a bell crank 17 mounted in frame 1,
as indicated, and said link normally rests 5 against a guide stop 18 which holds said jaw 15 in proper position for lateral engagement by the different knobs 14. Bell crank 17 is connected by means of links 19 with a hand lever 20 which is pivotally 7 mounted at 21 in frame 1. By this arrangement, it will be observed, that a powerful leverage may be exerted upon a punch plunger operatively connected with jaw 15, and that the different punch plungers may be readily placed in operative relation with jaw 15.
The punches 10 are made of difierent sizes and may be readily removed and replaced so that this construction afi'ords a so simple and effective means for readily punching difierent sized holes.
A spring-held locking pin 22 is mounted in the lower portion of frame 1 under the system of operating levers, and rotatable head 3 is provided with a locking opening 23 located under each of the die seats 12 for cooperation with said locking pin, to lock said head in proper position to facilitate operation of the different punches by means of so the system of levers shown.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A punch press comprising a frame; a set of compound levers pivot-ed in said frame; a connecting link operatively connected with said compound levers; an arm on said frame engaging the lower end of said connecting link assisting in maintaining the latter inclined when in normal condition; and a revoluble holder mounted in said frame and carrying a plurality of punch press elements each of which is adapted to engage and be operated by said connecting link, substantially as described.
2. A punch press comprising a frame; a bell crank lever pivoted in said frame; a lever pivot-ed in said frame and operatively connected with said bell crank lever, said lever and bell crank lever being formed to engage each other and define their normal positions at one terminal of their movements; a connecting link connected with one arm of said bell crank lever; an arm on said frame and engaging the under side of said connecting link maintaining the latter nor- 15 mally in inclined position; and a revoluble holder mounted in said frame and carrying a plurality of punch press elements each of which is adapted to engage and be operated by said connecting link, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
