To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD MOGINTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doylestown, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to printing presses having adjustable mechanism for supplying ink to the distributing rollers, and my leading objects are to provide improved means for effecting and maintaining the desired adjustment from the position of the printer in feeding the press and for controlling the action of the distributing rollers.
The nature and characteristic features of my improvements will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a printing press having my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the feeding table, together with parts of my improvements supported thereby; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a part of the press including the adjustable mechanism for supplying the ink.
The press, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises the frame 1, the bed 2 pivotally connected therewith, the crank disks 3 and pitmen 4 by which the bed is oscillated, the frame 5 adapted to be oscillated on the bed by the movement thereof and the action of the links 6, the arms 7 pivotally connected with the frame 5 and carrying the rollers 8 for distributing ink upon the disk 9, and the pivoted frame 10, which carries the ink fountain 11 and the roller 12 for delivering ink from the fountain through the curved distributing plate 13 to the rollers 8 during their passage over such plate. This construction is shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 776793, granted to me December 6, 1904:.
In my present improvements, the arms 7 have arms 7 connected therewith to provide levers fulcrumed on the bearings 5 of the frame 5, the frame is provided with the bearing lugs or shoulders 5", rods 14: with shoulders 1% thereon are connected by the pivots 14 with the arms 7, and
springs 14 are disposed on these rods between the shoulders against which they bear to keep the rollers 8 in engagement with the distributing surfaces or in position to engage the properly positioned supply roller .12. To position the roller 12, so-that its desired degree of contact with the distributing rollers shall be obtained, the cam 15, which is jou rnaled in the bed and acts in the fork 10 of the frame 10,
has a crank arm 16 fixedthereto and connected by a link 17 with a lever 18, which rocks on the bearing 19 carried by the frame 1. The lever 18 is connected by a link 20 with an arm 21 which is fixed on a shaft 22, the latter being journaled in the bearings 23 which depend from the feed board 24. The shaft 22 is provided with a handle .25 for turning it and with a sector 26 containing a slot 26 for holding it. A bolt 27, fixed to the adjacent bearing 23, extends through the slot and a thumb nut 28 on the bolt engages the sector to clamp it in position. The sector is provided with the circular flange 26" above the nut 2 to protect the latter from accidental movement in feeding the press.
By loosening the nut 28 and turning the handle 25, the shaft 22 is caused to act through the arm 21, link 20, lever 18, link 17 and arm 16 to adjust the cam 15, which acts in the fork 10 on the frame 10 to regulate the position of the roller 12 with reference to the rollers 8, which latter are maintained in their desired relation by the thrust of the spring 14 communicated through the lever comprising the arms 7 and 7 The movement of the frame 5, which carries the rollers 8 from the disk 9 toward the roller 12, causes the cam 29 thereon to act against the roller 30 on the lever 31 having the fulcrum 32, whereby this lever is rocked and acts through the link 33, arm 34:, pawl 35 and ratchet 36 to advance the roller 12 so that difierent parts of the surface thereof shall be presented to the rollers 8 for succeeding movements thereof. A spring 37 acts through the lever 31, l1nk 33, and arm 34 to retract the pawl 35 upon the reverse movement of the frame 5, the spring also serving to keep. the roller 30 in contact with the cam 29.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. In a printing press, the combination with a stationary frame having a feed board and a rocking bed having adjustable Patented Nov. 4,1913.
ink. supply means, of a bearing fixed to said feed board, a shaft journaled in said bearing, a handle fixed to and adapted for turning said shaft, a slotted sector fixed to said shaft, means passing through said sector to an, engagement with said bearing for holding said shaft, and mechanism con-- nected with said shaft whereby said ink supply means are adjusted and held.
2. In a printing press, the combination of a stationary frame, a rocking bed, an ink fountain pivotally mounted on said bed, an ink supply roller connected with said fountain, a journaled cam carried by said bed whereby the position of said fountain and roller are adjusted, an arm fixed to said cam, a lever fulcrumed on said bed, a link connecting said arm and lever, a feed board Copies of this patentmay be obtained for carried by said frame, a bearing carried by said feed board, a shaft journaled in said bearing, an arm fixed to said shaft, a link connecting said .last named arm and said lever, a handle fixed to sand shaft, a mem so ber having a slot therein fixed to said shaft,
