LOOSE-LEAF HOLDER.
Application. filed September To (1.7.1 echo m, f; vita-y concern 30. it known that 1, JOHN R. T'TALDEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose Leaf Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in loosedeaf holders, and my object is to provide a new and simple device of this character, which can be manufactured at small cost and is well adapted to the purpose intended.
The invention embodies a novel retaining-strip which covers and protects the bound ends of the leaves, and novel means for securin said retaining-strip in place.
Other features of the invent-ion will hereinafter appear, and in order that said invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, 1n wh1ch:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my looseleaf holder in open position. Fig. 2 1s an enlarged cross section on line TL-TI of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of my improved retaining strip and a novel locking member for securing said retainingstrip in position upon the leaves, and Fig. 4: is a broken horizontal section on line IV IV, of Fig. 1, with the book in closed position.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a suitable cover 1, to one side of which a pair of binding posts 2, are rigidly secured, said binding posts having peripheral gzjrooves 3, near their upper terminals.
4t designates the retaining-strip, vhich is of angle iron form to lend rigidity thereto, and so that its upper portion 5, will rest upon the topmost leaf A, while its vertical portion 0, engages the edges of the bound ends of the leaves, and thus protects and holds the same in alinement. The upper portion 5, of the retaining-strip, is provided near its ends with a pair of key-hole slots 7, so that it may be placed in position on the binding-posts as shown.
8 designates a locking member for securing the retaining-strip 4, upon the bindingposts 2. Said locking member is of angle iron form to fit the portions 5 and 6, of the retaining-strip 4L, and is operably-se- Specification of Letters Patent.

cured to portion 6, by a pivot 9. The pivoted side of the locking member 8, is provided at its free end with a detent 10, adapted to take into an indentation 11, in the vertical portion 6, of the retaining strip. The upper portion 12, of the locking mem' her 8, is provided at its free end with an eye 13, to admit the upper end. of one of the binding-posts 2.
In practice the loose-leaves A, are placed upon the binding posts 2, until even with the lower edges of the grooves 3. The retaining-strip 1, is then placed in position over the posts and moved longitudinally to the left, so that the edges of the narrow portions of the key-hole slots 7, are brought into engagement with the sides of the grooves 3, so that the heads lt, of the binding-posts will overlap the retaining-strip, and thus hold the same in position upon the leaves A. The locking member 8, is then lowered over the head of the adjacent binding-post, which is snugly embraced by the edges of eye 13, and thus locks the retaining-strip from longitudinal movement. hen the locking member 8, is lowered over the head of the adjacent binding-post detent 10, enters the indentation 11, and thus reliably secures said locking member in low cred position, until released by hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A loose-leaf holder consisting of a cover, binding-posts fixed at one end of said cover and having peripheral grooves near their upper ends, a retaining-strip having key-hole slots a portion of the edges of which are adapted to enter said peripheral grooves, a locking member pivoted to the binding-strip and provided at its free end with an eye adapted to snugly [it one of the binding-posts when said locking member is lowered upon the retainingstrip, and means for securing said locking member in lowered position.
2. A. loose-leaf holder consisting of a cover, bindingposts fixed at one end to said cover and having peripheral grooves near their upper ends, a retaining-strip having key-hole slots a portion of the edges of which. are adapted to enter said peripheral grooves, a locking member pivoted to the binding-strip and provided at its free end with an eye adapted to snugly fit one of In testimony whereof I ai'fix my signature the bmdlng-posts When szud locklng mem- 1n the presence of two wltnesses.
