Specification '42 mam-1mm.
Patented a. 21,1913.
Application filed Qetober 9, 1912. Serial No. 724,798.
To all whom it mag concern: V Be it known that 1,,Wumau 1D. Farms,
7 a citizen of the United States. of Amflrica,
. is my purpose residing at Jacksonville, inflthe county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Releasing Mechanism for Type-Writer. Type-Bars, 0 which the following is a s tion,
This invention relates to improvements in typewriters and has, particular applicaiion to a releasing mechanism for typewriter reys.
In carrying out the present invention, it to provide a mechanism whereby, in the event of the type bars remaining in writing position against the ac tion of the restoring means, as when'two keys are struck simultaneously, the type bars may be restored to normal position.
Itis also my purpose to provide a. releasing mechanism whereby the type bars of typewriting machines may be restored ton'ormaly osition, in the event of the same remaining in writing position against'the action of the restoring means, without necessitating the removal of, the typists hands from the key board. Or should a single type bar remain in writing position against the platen on account of the type bars being too tight in their bearings, same may be restored to normal position.
Furthermore, I aim to provide a releasing mechanism for the type bars of typewriting machines which may be readily applied to any type of machine and which will be simple in construction and reliable and efiicient in use.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts here'- inafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a typewriter showing my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, parts being broken away. I
It is a well known fact that when two or more keys are struck simultaneously, the type bars bind and remain in writing posi- .tion thereby necessitating the removal of the fingers from the key board to reach the type bars and pull the latter back onto the type bed. By means of my invention, this inconvenience" is eliminated and the type bars are restored to normal posit on without removing the hands from the key board of the machine.
Referring now to the. accompanying drawing in detail, the letter A indicates a suitable form of typewriter including the frame 1, key board 2, type bed 3, type bars 1 pivoted at one end for swinging move ment as usual and oonnectedto the type bar sub-lever5, the universal bar 6 by means of which the escapement mechanism is controlled, as is well known, the universalbar :a-rm 7, and the links 8 adapted to impart movement to the bars through the medium of the type bar sub-levers.
My improved type bar releasing mechanism, in the present instance, is manually controlled and comprises what may be termed a type bar throw arm 9, a type bar throw arm shaft 10 to which is rigidly fastened one end of the type bar throw arm 9 and which is journaled for rocking movement in suitable bearings carried by an appropiia'te part of the typewriter, a pull lever 11 being fastened at one end to the shaft 10, While the opposite end thereof is connected through the medium of a link 12 with the key lever 13 of the margin release key 14.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. Should two or more type bars stick together, incident to the keys thereof being struck simultaneously, the same may be released and returned to the type bed under the action of the usual restoring means, .this relcaseof the type bars being accomplished-by depressing the key 14, whereby a rocking motion is transmitted to the shaft- 10, through the medium of the link 12 and pull lever 11, with the effect to swing the type bar throw arm 9 into engagement with the universal bar 6, thereby striking the type bar sub-levers 5 whereby the type bars are moved out of contact with one another and to normal position under the action ot the'restoring means. 0
1n the" 'present form of my invention, I
have shown the margin release key 14 of the typewriter as employed for actuating my improved releasing mechanism. It will be understood, however, that this releasing mechanism may be actuated by any other suitable means. a 1
While I have herein shown and' described one particular embodiment of my invention I by way of illustration, I wish it to be under stood thatI do not confine myself to the details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the aims.
storingmeans,i"said actuating means comprising ait'ypebar throw arm adapted to be sw-unginto engagement universal bar whereby said type bars may be returned to normal position inthe event of the same remaining in writing position against the action of there with said universal bar, a rock shaft connected to saidar a pull lever for actuating said rock shaft, nd means for actuating said pull lever.
2. In a; typewriter, the combination w th the typelbars, of a release mechanism wheretion in the event, of the same remaining in writing position against the action of the restoring means, and means disposed upon the key board of the't-ypewr'iter for actuating said releasin mechanism. i
In testimony w ereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
