JOHN JOSHUA. IJIILLER, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
TAPE-LINE PROTECTOR.
Application filed February 7, 1913.
To all whom it may concern .1
Be it known that 1,, JOHN J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape-Line Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends improvements in tape line holders and relates more particularly to means for protecting the exposed end of the line.
The primary object of the invention resides in the pro-vision of an attachment for the line casing, which will effectually prevent foreign matter finding its way into the same, and which will also protect the end of the tape.
lVith these and other objects in View, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation I of a tape line casing embodying my invention. Fig. 9. is a sectional view through the same, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a section of the casing, showing my invention.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a tape line casing of the ordinary construction, having its peripheral wall 2 provided with a slot 3 through which the tape 4t runs. The end of the tape is connected in the usual manner to a loop 5. My invention aims to protect said loop and the end of the tape which is attached thereto and also to prevent foreign matter entering the slot 8.
In the preferred embodiment of my in vention, I provide a housing 6 having one end open, as at 7, the housing being mounted upon the wall 2 of the casing and disposed over the opening 3. The housing is closed at one end by a wall 8 and has side walls 9 which space the top wall 10 from the peripheral wall 2 of the casing 1. A cover is hinged to the wall 2 and is adapted to close the open end 7 of the housing. This cover is formed with a wall 11 which, when the cover is in its closed position, appears as a continuation of the wall 10. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

side walls 12 of the cover have their ends beveled, as at 13, for engagement with the beveled ends of the walls 9. A reinforcing block 14: is secured within the cover for the purpose of strengthening the same and providing a bearing for the pintle 15 which is secured at its ends to the wall 2 of the casing. A projection 16 is formed upon the pivoted end of the wall 11 of the cover and by engaging the spring 17, serves to hold the cover in its open or closed position.
Upon reference to Fig. 2, it will be seen that when the cover is in its closed position, it forms with the housing 6, a closed compartment for the protection of the loop 5 and the end of the tape which is attached thereto. It will also be noted that the loop 5 is not drawn entirely within the housing 6 and therefore may be readily grasped when it is desired to unwind the tape.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very practical tape protector which is of eX tremely simple construction, which may be easily applied to tape casings now in common use, and which will not interfere in any way with the operation of the tape.
It is to be understood that while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to this exact construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, but may make such changes as will fall within the scope and spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a tape casing having a slot formed in the peripheral wall thereof, of a housing extending over said slot and being open at one end, and a cover hinged to said casing and adapted to close the open end of the housing, whereby the free end of the tape is protected and foreign matter excluded from the slot.
2. The combination with a cylindrical tape casing having a slot formed in its peripheral wall, of a tape line adapted to run through said slot and provided upon its free end with a loop, a housing secured to said peripheral wall and covering the slot, a cover pivoted to the casing and adapted to close the open end. of the housing, and means for retaining the cover in its open or closed position.
3. The combination with a tape casing having a slot formed in one wall, of a housing projecting over said slot and open at one end, a cover having a top wall and side walls, the cover forming when in its closed position, a continuation of the housing, a reinforcing block secured within said cover, a pintle passing through said block and secured to the casing, a projection formed upon the pivoted end of the cover, and a flat metal spring adapted to be engaged by said projection, whereby the cover is retained in its open or closed position.
4:. The combination with a tape casing having a slot formed in the peripheral wall thereof, of a housing extending over said slot and being open at one end, and a cover hinged to said peripheral wall for the purpose of closing the open end of housing,
whereby foreign matter is excluded from the interior of the casing.
5. The combination with a tape casing having a slot formed in one wall thereof, of a housing extending over said slotv and open at one end, a pivoted cover adapted to close the open end'of the housing, and spring means for retaining the cover in its open or closed position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
I JOHN JOSHUA MILLER.
