RAIDSFJAYL To all whom it mayconcern Be it known that I, Josn1 H M. VAELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of Bryan, in the county -of Williams and ,5 Stateof Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Rail-Stay; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andin any connection for which it may be adapted or appropriate. 7
The object of my invent-ion is the provision of improved means of this character,
which is simple and inexpensive of manufacture, and capable of being easily-and quickly applied to a rail without the use of bolts or other retaining means.
A further object of my invention is to provide a single-piece device of this nature,
which is automatically operable to firmly clamp a rail upon a creeping movement of the rail in one direction relative to an associated supporting tie, whereby the rail and tie are caused to move together.
3.5 The invention is fully: described in the following specification, and while in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying 4 drawings, in which,

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a railway tie, and 2 a rail supported thereby, to the base of which a device comprising my invention is clamped. This device comprises a bar or body member 3, which is intended to extend beneath a rail from one side to the other thereof, fireferably in'flat contact with its base, and is provided at one end with a clamping head or jaw i for engaging around one side edge of the rail base.

The head 4 is disposed transversely of the bar 3 and has one end preferably projected beyond the bar, as shown. A spring-bar 5 extends. from the projected end of the head 4 in the general direction of projection of the body member 3 from such head, and is of sufiicient le th to adapt it to extend from one side tol tlie other of a rail base beneath the same, and has its free end terminating in a jaw or head 6 for clamping a rail base in opposition to the head 4:, as shown in F ig. 1. The bar 5 is preferably, but not necessarily, integral-1y connected at its inner end to the head 4, and is provided intermediate its ends with one or more loops 7 or is otherwise suit ably formed, to adapt its free end to yieldingly grip a rail base in opposition to the head 4: and to have lengthening movements relative to such head to facilitate a springing of one or the other of the clamping heads into or out of engagement with a rail base when the other clamping head is engaged with the opposite edge of the base.
The clamping head 6 projects toward the free end portion of the body bar3, and has its outer side-longitudinally tapered or beveled, as shown at 8, to adapt it to work within the angled or laterally projecting end port-ion 9 of the body bar 3 and to cooperate therewith to eflect a relative comv pressing or rail base binding action of the clamping heads 4 and 6 when the free end portions of the bars 3 and 5 are moved to ward each other, which movement is permitted by reason of the yielding connection therebetween.
The body bar 3 is preferably provided on its under side with reinforcing webs 10, and
on its outer side or that opposed to the bar 5, with a tie abutment 11. This abutment is preferably disposed adjacent to the inner end of. the bar to lessen the liability of breaking the bar from the head 4 when a tie moving stress is communicated by the .device from a rail to a tie.

In applying one of my devices to a. rail,.it is placed under the 11C lng engagement with the rail base and at the same time 18 adapted to permit a yielding movement of the body-bar 3 longitudinally of the rail and relative to the spring bar 5.
in contact with the side of a tie toward which the rail may have a tendency to creep, as shown in Fig. 1, the creeping tendency in such figure being in the direction indicated by the arrow. Upon a creeping action of the rail the'abutment 11 of the body-bar 3 has its thrust against the tie so that the tie opposes a creeping movement of such bar,
.thus causing the-free end portion of the bar to spring toward the bar 5 and the angled end portion 9 thereof to coact with the wedge surface 8 of the clamping-head \3 to effect an opposed tightening action of the clamping heads 4 and 6 against the rail base, whereby the device is rigidly held to the rail so that any further creeping action of the rail will be positively communicated to the tie.
For the purpose of durability and cheapness of construction it is preferable to cast my anti-rail creeping device 1n a single piece from malleable iron, as such metal is sufficiently yieldable in its nature to permit of a relative yielding action of the clamping heads and also of the bars 3 and 5. It Will be understood, however, that my invention is not limited to the use of any particular material or to the construction of the device in a single integral piece, as the same'function might be performed by securing several parts together as is apparent.
It is evident that my device may be easily and quickly engaged with a rail base without the use of bolts or any other securing means, and that the clamping heads thereof are connected for yielding movements transversely of a rail while the body-bar 3 and the part connecting the two heads are adapted to have relative yielding movements' longitudinally of the rail.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, form or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is,

3. A device of the class described having a plurality of yieldingly connected crossbars, and rail-base clamping members carried bythe bars for relative yielding movements transversely of a rail, one of said bars serving as a thrust member.
4. A device of the class described having a pair of opposed rail-base clamping parts, and a looped member yieldin'gly connecting said partsbeneath an engaged rail-base and normally maintaining the same in clamped engagement therewith, one of said parts having a tie abutting portion separate from said looped member," s

7. A device of the class described having a pair of opposed railvbase clamping parts, a longitudinally yieldable connect on be tween said parts, and a thrust member projecting from one of said parts and being yieldable relative to said connection transversely thereof and having a portionfor co acting with said parts to effect a rigid clamping of a rail thereby when said memher is moved in one direction relative to said connection.-
8. A single-piece device'of the class described having a thrust part, a pair of opposed rail-base clamping parts, and a longitudinally yieldable connection between said clamping parts for normally maintaining the-same in clamping engagement with an interposed rail-base.
9. A single-piece device of the class described having yieldingly connected crossbars one being longitudinally yieldable and having opposed rall-base clamping parts at opposed end portions thereof, said bars being adapted to coact at their free end portions when relatively contracted to effect a relative contraction of the clamping parts.
10. A single-piece device of the class described having a pair of cross-bars which are connected for relative transverse yielding movements, one of said bars serving asa thrust member and the other being longitudinally yieldable and having opposed railbase clamping parts adjacent to its end portions, the .free end of said longitudinally yieldable bar having wedge coaction with the free end portion of the thrust bar when said bars are relatively contracted whereby to effect a relative contraction of the clamping parts.
