WAGON-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sepeeo, 1913.
Application filed November 11, 1911. Serial no. esases.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrrus L. SWVEENEY,
a resident of the United States, residing at Franklin, county of Williamson, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wagon bodies and has for its object the provision of a body having side and rear extensions whereby it is adapted to be used for handling different commodities.
The novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the front and one side of my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the interior arrangement when the extensions are in their open position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 4: is a transverse section on the line 4 4. of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a detail view of a connection between a front board and the bottom of the body.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the invent-ion comprises side sills 10 and 11, to which are secured cross-bars 12,
the latter forming the supports for the floor 13. Stirrups 14: are arranged on the inner sides of the sills 10 and 11 at the front ends thereof and receive the uprights 15 and 16 of the front board 17. The uprights 15 and 16 are connected at their tops by the crossbar 18. The sides of the body consist of uprights 19 to which are secured the longitudinally extending slats 20. The uprights 19 are provided with the hinge members 21 which engage eyes 22 on the sills 10 and 11. It will be observed that the hinge members 21 are so formed at their lower ends asto be readily removable from the eyes 22.
At the rear of the bed an extension 23 is hinged thereto and adapted to be held in open position by means of the rods 21 which have one end in engagement with the rings 25, secured to the extension 23, the opposite ends of these rods being bent to form books which engage suitable eyes 26 secured to the upper rear corner of the side extensions. Each of the side extensions is also provided with an eye 27 arranged forwardly of the eyes 26 and adapted to receive the end of therods 24 when the extension 23 is in the upright or closed position. In moving the extension 23 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the upright position, the rods 24: will slide through the eyes 26 and be hooked into the eyes 27, thereby securely locking the sides and rear in their closed position.
' At the forward ends of the side extension are eyes 28 to which are connected the chains 29 which support the side extensions from the front board as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Suitable chains 30 may be provided at the middle of the side extensions and secured together by any suitable connection 31 for the purpose of supporting the sides in their open position. At the rear the sides are supported in their open position by means of chains 32 which have one end connected with the eyes 26 and their opposite ends connected with the rings 33 secured to the sills 10 and 11. As thus constructed it will be seen from Fig. 2 that the extensions are securely supported in their open position and may be readily moved into their upright position and securely held by means of the chains and the rods 24. The extensions may also be readily removed by disconnecting the chains and the hinges which hold them together. The rear extension may be supported in the open position when the sides are either closed or open and the rods 2 1 will, for all positions, lie substantially in the planes of the side extensions whereby the pull of the rods will be transmitted directly to the hinges and there will be practically no tendency to swing the side extensions either above or below the'positions in which they are held. When the extensions are in their closed positions the rods 2 L engage the eyes 27 and securely lock the extensions together.
When it is desired to use the wagon bed for carrying live stock the extensions will be in their closed position and a suitable cover may be provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a wagon body, the combination of side and rear extensions having readily detachable hinged connections therewith, a readily of the side extensions on the inner sides thereof, said rods having hooks on their forward ends adapted to engage said eyes to support the rear extension from the side ex- 5 tension, and other eyes on the side extensions forwardly of the first-mentioned eyes and adapted to be engaged by said hooks to secure the side and rear extensions together in closed position, said parts being so con- 10 structed and arranged that said rods for the open and closed posit-ions of the side and rear extensions lie substantially in the planes of the side extensions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. V
