To all whom itmay concern:
,Be it knownthat I, JOHN H. HUHN, a citizen of the UnitedStates of America, and resident of Fairmont, county of Marion, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inCoal- Leveling Machines for Beehive-Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in coal leveling machines for use in connection with bee-hive coke ovens, and particularly to that class of leveling machine which are carried upon a carriage which moves on a track along the top of a row of cokeovens, and particularly to that class of carriage which are propelled by electrical means, and which carry electrical devices for actuating the mechanism carried thereon.
The invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying two sheets of drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of the leveling tool attached to the table of the carriage upon which it moves, shown in connection with a bee-hive oven in' a vertical cross-section. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the arms in their closed position. Fig. 3, a plan view with the arms partly open, and Fig. 4, a plan view with the arms full open; Fig. 5, an elevation showing the arms in their open position. Fig. 6, plan view of the mechanism for operating the arms, and Fig. 7, a cross-section through the vertical shaft of the leveling tool.

In the carriage 1 is the truckwhich carries a rotating table 13, driven from any parts convenient source of power, which in turn carries two arms 14, mountedon trunnions 15, so that they may be adjusted angularly,-
34, which is arranged to slide vertically 1n a suitable head 57. This head is mounted on the ends of the arms 14, as shown in Fig. 1. It is furnished with the bushings 42, and is recessed for the toothed wheel 28, which engages with a Worm wheel 27, arranged upon suitable hearings in the head 57, through which a rotary motion may be imparted to the tube 34, by means of a sprocket and chain 26 on the shaft of the worm 27. As shown in Figs. 1 and 7 the hollow tube 34 has a keyway 34 its entire length. The toothed wheel 28 is provided with an internal key 28*. The tube 34 is free to move up and down within the head 57, and the wheel 28. No matter in what position the tube 34 may be, it may always be rotated by the wheel 28, on account of the internal key, attached to the latter. In theinterior of the tube 34 there is a shaft 64, which is arranged to be held stationary or rotated with the tube 34. The shaft 64 carries at its lower extremity the cross head or arm 68, shown in Figs. 1 to 5. The tube 34 is closed at the top by the head 81, which is of the form shown. The head 81 is surrounded by a plate 51, which supports it, so that the tube 34 and the head 81 rise or fall with the plate 51. The plate 51 is extended to support the shaft 60 and to support the friction arm 12, which will be described later. The shaft 64 passesup into a suitable seatin the head 81, and is provided at the top with the friction wheel 62. Surrounding the wheel 62 is the friction band 11, actuated through the arm 12, and the shaft 60 by the lever 61. 'To the lower extremity of the tube 34 is attached the arm 40.
The form of the arms employed. in the present structure for leveling the coal is best seen by reference to Figs. 2 to 5. These are composed of a series of upper and lower horizontal pieces, 31, as shown in Fig. 5, be-
.tween which are pivoted the horizontal tating the tube 34:, while the shaft 64 is held stationary, it will be seen that the pantographic arms are extended or retracted according to the direction of rotation. The tube 34, and with it the leveling arms 81 and 35 are raised and lowered within the head 57, by means of the cable 24, attached to the yoke 54, which passes over pulleys on the top of the tower 17, and is connected with the drum 23, upon which it winds.
The method of operation is as follows: hen the apparatus is in use the tube 34: is drawn up until the arms 31 and 35 are close to the head 57. The carriage is then run along on the track to the point where the arms come directly opposite the opening 0 in the coke oven. The entire mechanisnris then lowered by releasing the drum 23.- Motion is then given the tube 34 and the lever 14 thrown to the on position, which tightens the friction band 11, and prevents the friction wheel 62, shaft 64, and arm 68 from turning. This extends the arms 31 and 35, horizontally. Then the arms are extended, the operator releases the lever, which swings back to its former position, allowing the friction wheel 62 and shaft '64 to rotate with the tube 34:. l/Vhen the oven is properly leveled the operator reverses the motion of the tube 34, and again throws in the lever 14, preventing the shaft 62 and arm 64 from rotating. This retracts the arms to their closed position, andallows the mechanism to be drawn up out of the oven.
I claim as my invention: 1. In a coke leveling machine a rotatable spreading or leveling bar or arm composed of foldable and extensible parts of pantographic type.
2. In a coke leveling machine, the combination with 'a rotatable and vertically movable element of a spreading or leveling bar 'or arm, composed of foldable and extensible parts of pantographictype, and means, substantially as described, for unfolding and extending the parts after being moved vertically downward.
3. In a coke leveling machine the combination with an "element arranged to be lowered into the coke oven and rotated, of a spreading bar or arm of a pantographic type, the parts of which are horizontally foldable and extensible, and means substantially as described for unfolding and extending the parts after the vertical element is lowered into the furnace.
4:. In a coke leveling machine the combination with an elementarranged to be lowered into the coke oven and rotated, of a spreading or leveling bar or arm of a pantographic type, .the parts of which are horizontally foldable and extensible, and means substantially as described for unfolding and extending the parts after the vertical element is lowered into the furnace, and means suban inner vertically movable bar, and horizontally foldable and extensible spreader bar pivoted at its inner end thereto, substan tially as set forth. 7. The combination with a traveling carriage, of a laterally adjustable frame there on, vertically adjustable plunger mechanism mounted in the frame provided with an inner vertically movable bar, horizontally foldable and extensible spreader bar pivoted at its inner end thereto, and means for vertically adjustingthe plunger and its vertically movable bar, and sprea'der'bar, with relation to each other, substantially as setforth. p
8. The combination with a traveling carriage, of a laterally adjustable frame thereon, vertically adjustable plunger mechanism mounted in the frame provided with an inner vertically movable bar, horizontally foldable and extensible spreader bar pivoted at its inner end thereto, and means for vertically adjusting the plunger and its vertically movable bar, and spreader bar, with relation to the desired level of the coal within an oven, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination with a traveling carriage, of a laterally adjustable frame thereon, vertically adjustable plunger mechanism mounted in the frame provided gwith an inner vertically movable bar, horizontally foldable and extensible spreader bar pivoted at its inner end thereto, means for vertically adjusting the plunger and itsvertically'movable bar, and spreader bar, with relation to each other, and means for rotating said parts, substantially as set forth.
