Description
UNITED @TATEQJ @T lFliQE.
JOSEPH NITSCHMAN, O12 NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
EMBROIDERY-FRAME.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn NITSGUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful improvements in Embroidery-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to prevent sagging of an article to be embroidered on an embroidery frame.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4f is a View similar to Fig. 3 on the line l of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrow.
The frame a is adapted to hold a handkerchief 5 suitably stretched so that the op eration of embroidering the handkerchief may be accomplished with a minimum of effort. In this connection the sides of the frame constitute channeled clamping jaws 6 and 7 of substantially Uconliguration one of which is suitably connected at one end, such as by a pivot 8 to the other jaw memher and is adapted, when in closed position, to be received by the said other jaw memher. The receiving jaw member 6 is preferably let into recesses in the ends 9 of the frame a and is secured therein, in any preferred manner such as by pins 10. The free end portion of the jaw member 7 normally diverges from the jaw member 6. The aw 6 has its upper longitudinal edges bent outwardly and downwardly as indicated by the reference character (3, and said outwardly and downwardly bent portions adapted to contact with the outer faces of said jaw for a portion of its length and tending to reinforce the upper end of the jaw and permitting of the jaw to snugly lit the opposed side walls of the recesses in the ends 9. Since, however, the said jaw memher 7 is resilient the free end portion thereof may be forced into the jaw member 6 and held against displacement by latches 11 pivoted as at 12 to one end of the frame a and having curved projections 13 which are adapted to over-ride the free end portions of the jaws 7, whereby, to hold the latter Specification of Letters Patent.

against displacement and iensioned in the jaw members (3,
The floor of the receiving jaw member (3 is provided with a longitudinal head or rib projecting between the side walls of the member and which is received by the chain neled jaw T. 'ith this construction it will be seen that when portions of a handkerchief are arranged transversely of the jaw members (5 and the jaw members 7 moved to closed position, the fabric will be clamped between the jaws as shown in Fig. 3, after which the latches 11 which are pivotally connected to the inner face of one of the end members 9 will be moved over the jaws 7, this having the effect of preventing disengagement of the handkerchief. in addition to clamping the handkerchief by the jaws 6 and 7, I. also provide a clasp 6 located at one end of the frame and positioned so as to grip the handkerchief at a point between the portions gripped by the jaws (3 and 7. The clasp includes resilient jaw members 14 and 15 of different lengths and connected together at one end by a curved portion 16. The gripping surfaces of the jaw members l t and 15 are uninterrupted and the longer jaw member has its free end bent so as to extend transversely of the end surface of the shorter jaw member, as shown at 17.
18, 18 indicate perforated lugs extending laterally from the lower jaw member as viewed in Figs. 1 and 2 and 19 indicates suitable fastening means such as screws which pass through the openings in the lugs 18 and into the end of the frame so as to secure the clasp thereto. It will be observed that the free end portions of the jaws extend into the space flanked by the sides and end of the frame so that when the portion of the handkerchief between the sides is pulled toward the clasp, the jaws thereof may grip the same. 111 this connection it will be observed that owing to the bent end portion 17 of the longer jaw, a fabric will be forced therearound when the jaws are in closed position, whereby, slipping of the handkerchief will be prevented. For locking the jaws in closed position I en'iploy a locking lever 20 pivoted to upstanding lugs 21 carried by the lower jaw, the bent end portion 22 of the lever being adapted, when moved to the position shown in Fig. 1., to close the jaws whereupon its free end will bear on the curved portion 16. When the lever is moved to an upright position the bent end portion 22 will be moved to a position parallel with the jaws, whereby, the upper aw will move to open position.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invent-ion it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the specific arrangement and construction of the and each being of substantial U-configuration one of which receives the other, the said outer member having its bottom wall provided with a longitudinal bead' or rib projecting between the side walls of said member and received by the channel of the said inner member, means for locking said members, said means being pivotally connected to the inner side face of one of said end members, beneath the outer side member and adapted to override the bottom of the said inner clamping jaw. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH NITSCHMAN.
