CHARLES E. WILSON, 'OF M'USKEGON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE SHAW-WALKER COMPANY, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1913.
Application fi ed September 3 1912. Serial No. 718,286.
To all whom it may concern Tie it known'that I, Crmmjns E. VLLSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
lvluskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to desks, such as are furnished with compartments for the reception of papers, etc., and its ob' ject is to provide a desk of that character comprising units or sections capable of being assembled and disassembled, and variously improved, all as hereinafter particularly set forth in the claims. This object is attained by, and the invention finds a neferable embodiment in, the desk hereinafter described, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my desk; Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, butshowing the various members disassembled and in relative position; Fig. 3 is a rear view in perspective of the desk, cer tain members being partly' withdrawn; Fig. 1 is a top plan view of one of the base members; Fig. 5 is alike view of the same, but showing its parts separated and in relative position; Fig. 6 is an inner side View of one of the base members; Fi 7 is a bottom plan View of the same, and Fig. 8 is a fragmentary section on line ss of Fig. 1.
My desk has two base members 1, each of which is provided with a back portion 2 extending upwardly to a height suitable for supporting the table top 3. Between these back portions and inserted at either side into a vertical groove 4 in each is removably held a middle back portion 5, which is clamped in this position by a screw rod 6 passing through the inner stiles 7 of the back portions 2 and carrying wing nuts 8. The base portions 1 are of so-called knock-down construction, and comprise the rear stiles 7, whose lower ends form rear legs, the forward legs 9, base side rails 10, front base rail 11, and rear members 12. The stiles 7 may be permanently connected by these members 12 as shown, and the side rails 10 and front rail 11 permanently connected by the diagonal piece 13. The front legs 9 may be removably connected to the side and front rails by the lag screws 14 passing through the diagonal pieces and threaded for the holding wing nuts 11.1 while the stiles 7 ma' be removably colmectcd to the side rails 10 by angle irons 16 through which pass screws 17 turned into said stiles.
Cabinet sections or units 20 of various forms and of a combined height suflicicnt to support the table top 3 at the height fixed by the stiles, are arranged as shown on each base member, and are provided with suitable connecting members, as the cleats 18 on the upper side of the sections and base members interlocking with the cleats 19 on the under side of such sections. These cleats 18 and 19 are pierced alincdly at 21, so that a threaded rod 22 may be pushed through the orifices 21 of all the interlocking cleats and screwed into the nut plate 23 screwed to the back portion 2, thus securely holding the adjoining sections and base member together.
The table top 3 is provided on its under side with downwardly extending members 24, as shown in Fig. 2, adapted to interlockingly engage with the cleats 18 of the top sections.
Inasmuch as the sections or units 20 are frequently not so long from front to rear as the desired width of the table top 3, a filler piece or panel 25 may be inserted behind such sections (when the desk is being assembled), its lower edge being inserted into a groove 26 in the side rail 10 and its rear edge into a groove 27 in the front face of the stile 7.
Not confining myself to the details of construction shown or described, I claim:
1. In a sectional desk, a base member having an upwardly-extending back portion integral therewith, cabinet sections vertically arranged on the base in front of the back portion, and a table top supported thereby.
2. In a sectional desk, a base member having an upwardly-extending back portion provided with a screw nut, cabinet sections vertically arranged on the base and having interlocking cleats with alined orifices, and a screw rod passing through such orifices and threaded into the screw nut.
3. In a sectional desk, two base members spaced apart. and having upwardly-extend ing side back portions, a middle back portion between the side back portions, and a threaded bolt extending between the side 5 111g a horizontal portion and an upwardlyextending back portion, a fcabin'et section carried on \the base, a table top supported thereby, and a removable filler panel betweenthe table top, the horizontal portion 10 of the base, the section and the back portion, and held in grooves in twoof its said surrounding members.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. WILSON;
Witnesses: I
