Patented Sept. a, 1913.
To all whom a may .cpncemlt Be it known that I, JAooB J. THELEN, a
citizen of the United States residing at- Schenectady, in th'e 'county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check- .A further object of the invention resides I in providing a device which is so constructed as to be readily taken apart for repairs or other purposes when desired.
With these and-other objects in view, my invention consistsinthe novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part ofthis application, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device; and' Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough, as seen on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a valve body or casing havin the inlet 2 provided in the bottom thereof a apted to receive a pipe, not shown, said casing or body being also rovide'd with a valve seat 3. A disk valve 4 is adaptedto be seated on the valve seat 3, said disk being formed.
integral with a stem or shank 5 extending above and below thesame. That portion of the stem or shank which extends below the diskis of a smaller diameter than the upwardly extending portion of the shank and the same is shdabl disposed through a guide sleeve 6 formed in a spider 7, which is disposed in the inlet of the member 1 between the extreme lower portion thereof and said valve seat 3. It will be observed that the seat 3 is projected inwardly into the casing, thereby 'forming an annular trough 3' surrounding said seat.
The upper portion of top of the casing or body 1 has an outlet opening 8 therein the engagement the threaded lower portion of a unionor cap member 9, said member 9 being adapted to receive therein the end of a pipe, not shown.- This union or cap member 9 has a spider or the like 10 formed in the bottom thereof whichsupports an additional guide sleeve 11 which is disposed in alinement with the guide sleeve 6 and adapted to receive therethrough the upwardly projecting portion of the shank 5, formed on said valve. The valve therefor will be guided throughout its movementwhen raised and lowered.
As stated, the valve 4 is of disk-like formation, the upper face of the. same being somewhat convexed, while the bottom face of the same is fiat and provided with an a l of which ar thread d to re e n annular groove 12 contiguous with the downwardly projecting portion of the shank 5. Any back pressure whatsoever after the valve has been raised will cause the latter to return to its effective position on the seat 3, and as the projecting portions of the shank 5 are normally disposed through the guidingsleeves 6 and 11, it will be appreciated that said valve will' be guided throughout its movement.
is raised so that sediment will not collect thereon but will settle below the valve into said trough, and thus materially lessen resistance to the flow past the valve.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a check valve which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which is very eflicient in operation.
While I have particularly described the elements most well adapted to'perform the functions set forth, it will be understood By. the provision of the annulartrough 3, the valve seat that the invention is capable of various changes and modifications within the scope of the appended claim.
.In order to limit the upward movement of the stem or shank 5 so as to prevent total displacement of the same when raised, a collar 12' is formed on the upwardly extending portion of said shank which is adapted. to abut the lower edge of the guide sleeve 11 when the disk). is raised.
Having thus described this invention, what is. claimed is 2-' i {The hereindescribed check valve comprising a casing having inlet and outlet ports and a valve seat projecting into the casing around said inlet port and providing an annular trough surrounding said seat, a valve member comprising a stem having a valve disk integrally formed thereon inter mediate of its ends, said disk being of greater diameter than the valve seat to overhang said annular trough when engaged upon said seat, the .under surface of said valve disk being fiat and provided with an annular groove contiguous to the valve stem and of less diameter than the valve seat, the upper surface of said valve disk being convex, and means arranged in the inlet and outlet ports for guiding the valve stem in 15 its movement.
' Intestimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
