UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
SAMUEL FELL JONES, 0F THAYER, KANSAS.
EMBALMERS INSTRUMENT.
, of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embalmers Instruments, of which the followlng 1s a specification.
This lnvention relates to embalmers" 1nstruments for use in packing the rectum,
vagina or other canals or orifices of the body with cotton; and it has for its primary object the provision of an instrument of this character which will be constructed with a view to simplifying such packing operations that may be necessary to an effective blocking of the canals and for rendering the operation more sanitary by obviating any necessity of the operator touching the body with the hands while the treatment is being administered.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an instrument of this character which will embody relatively springy jaws, between which may be grasped the packing material whereby the latter may be carried into a canal and further the formation at the extreme ends of the jaws of hammerlike surfaces or tamping portions that may be adjusted against one another whereby they may be advanced against the packing material after the latter is released from between the jaws.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an edge view of the instrument, showing the jaws thereof in normal positions; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the jaws adjusted for impingement against the packing material during the operation of initially inserting the latter; Fig. 3 is a side view illustrating the jaws in closed positions; Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a side view.
The instrument comprises companion gripping jaws 1, which are constructed preferably from a single piece of metal tempered so as to render the jaws highly elastic and permit the same to normally assume relatively distended positions. The jaws, at their points of connection with each other, are formed to provide an attaching shank 2 which may be soldered or otherwise suitably Specification of Letters Patent.

secured in the kerf 3 ofa head or manipulating member 4, the latter being constructed of metal and having weight which will,
admirably contribute to the cfliciency of the instrument and simplify the operation of The jaws are flared from each other at a point from the shank 2 and slightly bulged between their ends, as at 5. Each jaw decreases in width toward its tamping end and at the opposite end and at points slightly below the shank 2, the jaws are provided with roughened finger gripping surfaces 6, against which the thumb and fore-finger of the hand may be engaged and pressure thereof applied directly to the jaws so as to move the latter into operative packing impinging positions or tamping positions as may be desired. At the small ends, the jaws are provided with substantially hemispherical hammer elements or tamping portions 7 having flat backs 8 whereby the elements will collectively be in the form of a sphere or the like thereof when the jaws are adjusted to bring the backs 8 against one another.
In using the instrument the treated packing material is placed in the usual manner between the jaws of the instrument. Pressure is then applied against the jaws so as to cause the latter to effectually impinge against the material and thereby permit the latter to be operatively conducted to the desired points in the canal which is being treated. After the material has been ini tially introduced to the canal, the pressure of the hand is released from the jaws so as to permit the material to remain lodged in the canal while the instrument is drawn outwardly to permit of its being subsequently adjusted to bring the tamping surfaces 7 into mutual cooperative association where they take substantially the shape of a sphere. At this time the instrument may be reciprocated manually so as to advance the surfaces 7 into compressing engagementwith the packing material. The weight forming portion 4 is disposed in line with the tamping surfaces 7 after the jaws are adjusted to tamping positions. This is desirable in that the instrument is properly balanced and the weight of the portion 4: utilized with effectiveness toward expediting the tamping operation.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed,
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is An embalmers instrument comprising rel-, atively adjustable members having flat inner surfaces at their free ends and convex outer surfaces, the convexity of the outer surface of one of said members gradually merging into the outer surface of the other member When bot-h members are closed against one another, a shank connecting the tWo members With each other, and a Weight secured to the shank.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
