UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLF SGHWIEGER, OF HANOVER, GERMANY.
LOCK.
To aZZ whom it may conoem:
Be it known that I, ADoLr SoHwIEGEn, a subject of the German Emperor, residing` at Hanover, in Germany, have invented a certain new and nsefnl Improvement in Locks, of which the followingI is a specification.
This invention relates to locks having means for (logging the protracted bolts (latch bolt and dead bolt) by actuation of the handle.
The object of the present invention is to provide a lock of this kind, wherein said dogging means also comprises a device for Shooting the dead bo-lt, so that the entire Operation of looking can be effected by means of the handle, without using a key.
The invention is illnstrated in the accompa-nying drawing, in Whieh:-
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the interior of the lock, with the latch bolt free and the dead bolt retraeted, the retraeted position of the latch bolt being indicated by dot-ted lines. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the latch bolt dogged and the dead bolt free to be shot by the handle-actuated mechanism, the shot position of the dead bolt being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an elevation viewed at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, a represents the lock-case, b the latch bolt, and o the dead bolt. The latch bolt is actnatable by the spindle rollback which is also adapted to actuate the dead bolt by means of the lever e. The dead bolt is aetnatable in the usual manner by means of a key, and is locked by the tumbler f. g is a vertieally movable slide adapted to be actnated by the spindle roll-back and to dog both bolts. The spindle rollback d has notches h for engagement With the handle-lever dl indicated in Fig. 3 by dotted lines. On depression of the handlelever (Zl the arm i on the spindle roll-back co-acts with the pendent portion 7: of the latch bolt and retracts the latter as indieated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. VVhen the handle is released the latch bolt is shot by the Spring;` Z. To lock the latch-bolt in its shot position the handle is lifted to rotate the spindle roll-back into the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2. The arm m on the spindle roll-back is thus caused to lift the slide g so that the upper end of the latter moves behind the shot latch bolt and pre- Vents retraction of this bolt. In this posi- Specificaton of Letters Patent.

tion the notched arm i is engaged by the Spring` 0. The slide g is engaged with the tnmbler f, and by its upward movement lifts the tnmbler ont of engagement with the retracted dead bolt. By further rotation of the handle in the same direction the arms m and i are moved to the position indicated by dot-ted lines in Fig. 2. The arm i, acting on the arm 7) of lever o, causes the arm vi of the latter to thrust forward the upWard projecton s of the dead-bolt, and shoot said bolt, against the action of Spring t, the positions of the slide, lever o, tnmbler and deadbolt being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. l/Vhen the parts are in these positions, a lateral portion w of the lower end of the slide g projects behind the shot dead bolt and prevents retraction of same. The arm i is held by the Spring` o engaging over its npper edge, and the tail of said Spring` o, abntting against the lever e, is bent as indicated by dotted lines. On rotation of the lifted handle lever in the opposite direction the slide g is first removed from behind the dead bolt c, and this bolt is retracted by Spring i. Then the slide g is also Withdrawn from behind the latch bolt b. The lever e is restored to normal position by the Spring o. Toothed `gear Wheels or eqnivalent means may be used instead of a lever arm, for imparting` movement to the looking slide g by means of the handle spindle.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a lock the combination of a latch bolt, a dead bolt, a handle-spindle roll-back, a looking` member movable by said spindle roll-back Constructed to first lock the latch bolt and then lock the dead bolt, and a device aetuatable by said spindle for Shooting the dead bolt between the said Operations of the looking member.
2. In a lock the combination of a latch bolt, a dead bolt, a handle-spindle roll-back, a dogging member movable by said spindle Constructed to first dog the latch bolt and then dog the dead bolt, a device actuatable by said spindle roll-back for Shooting the dead bolt during the movement of the dogging-member and after the latch-bolt is dogged, and a tnmbler which normally locks said dead bolt and is engaged With said dogging member so that said tumbler is disengaged from said dead bolt by the movement of said dogging member.
3. In a lock the combination of a latch bolt, a dead bolt, a handle-spindle roll-back, a slide movable into the inWard paths of the shot bolts, means operatively connecting said slide to said Spindle roll-back, and a de- Vice actuatable by the spindle roll-back for shooting the dead bolt prior to movement of the slide into the path of the dead bolt.
4. In a lock the combination of a latch bolt, a dead bolt, a handle spindle roll-back, a slide movable into the inward paths of the shot bolts, means operatively connecting said Slide to said spindle roll-back, an arm on said spindle roll-back for retracting the latch bolt, and a lever actuatable by the latch-retracting arm for shooting the dead bolt prior to movement of the slide into the path of the dead bolt.
5. In a lock the combination of a latoh bolt, a dead bolt, a handle spindle roll-back, a looking membei` movable by said spindle roll-back constructed to first lock the latch bolt and then lock the dead bolt, a device actuatable by said spindle roll-back for Shooting` the dead bolt between the said consecutive Operations of the looking member, and means for retaining the spindle rollback in a position which it occupies between the looking of the latch bolt and the shooting of the dead bolt.
In Witness Whereo-f I have signed this specifcation in the presence of two Witnesses.
