BERT A. LITTLE, OF OKElllIAH, OKLAHOMA.
vof Oklahoma,
DRAWER-SLIDE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT A. LrrrLs, citizen of theUnited States, residing at Okemah, in the count-yof Okiuskee and State have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer-Slides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawer slides and has for its-object the provision of a drawer slide by which the drawer y will be supported rmly in a horizontal position when withdrawn vfar e'nough to permit inspection of its contents and by which the accidental release of the drawer from its support will be prevented.
A further object of the invention isto provide. a draiver slide of such a construe# tion that when the removal of the drawer is necessary'for any purpose it may be easily 'and quickly released and removed from its support. A
The invention seeks further to simplify and improve the construction of drawery V-slides to the end that the efficiency and dnrability' thereof will beincreased without increasing the cost of production.
The preferred embodiment ofmy invention 'is illustrated' in the accompanying drawings, which areA to be taken as part hereof, andthe invention will be hereinafter first fully. described and then particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drawer partly withdrawn from a desk and showing my improved slide applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the slide in its projected adjustment.
Fig. 3' is a similar View looking at the oppoguides or vmemlar 5 of the slide.
site side of the slide. Fig. 4. is an elevation showing' the slide in its retracted position. Fig. 5 1s an end view.
The desk 1 and the drawer 2 may be of the usual or any preferred construction and are lshown foi-'illustrative purposes only, it be- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19,1913.
Application filed March 12, 1912. Serial No. 683,316;
- projection or tooth 7 at the upper rear corner of the intermediate member 5 to limit the movement of the said intermediate mem' ber and thereby prevent the same being en'- tirely withdrawn from the baseV member. The base member 3 is preferably -constructed of a metal plate, having its edges doubled upon itself and secured to the article of furniture by suitable fastenings inserted through openings 8, as will be readily understood. The intermediate member 5 is likewise -preferably'constructed of a metal form reinforcing ribswhich will it within plate having :its edges doubled on itself to y the guides 4 so as to' prevent the member 5 of the slide playing so loosely upon the base member as to permit ldislodgment of the drawer, but at `the same timefit in said guides in a sutliciently loose manner to freely slide therein. The doubled-over o`r under-turned edges-9 of -the intermediate member also constitute guides or runways 4for the edges of the front or drawer-attaching member 10, which is also preferably constructed of a metal plate, secured to the side of the drawer by screws. or similarfastenings 11 inserted through openings' provided therefor near the ends of the member. The edges of the member 10, however, are not doubled upon themselves. but are offset so as to provide the ribs 12 adapted to engage the guides 9 and thereby maintain the drawer in a horizontal position while at the same time permitting its free movement. The lower guide 9 on the intermediateinember 5 is constructed with a shoulder or stop 13 in its upper edge and at a point determined 'by the"size `el the drawer.
hook or gravity catch 14 i`s`pivoted on the outer side of the member 10 and is adapted to engage the said stop 13 when the drawer is opened to its full extent so that the accidental removal of the drawer from the desk or other article of furniture will be prevented. At the .same time, if the removal of the drawer is necessary for any reason, the hook or catch 14 may be manually disengaged from the said lstop 13 by merely inserting the end of the finger through an opening 15 provided for that purpose 1n the .intermediate member 5 and then lifting the hook 'fromrits engagement with said stop, as will be readily understood.
'As the drawer is pulled out the dr a\\'erattaching member 10 of the slide will be iii-st drawnforward through its engagenien the intermediate member ot the slide will with the intermediate member 5 until the catch 14 engages the stop 13, after which be drawn forward until the projection 7 engages the stop or shoulder 6, in which position further outward movement of the drawer wlll be prevented. As the drawer is4 returned to its closed -positionthe members of the slide will telescope backwardly until they assume the relative positions shown in Fig. 4, which, it will be noted, is very compact so that they lie entirely within the lines of the article of furniture and will not detract from its appearance. l
The slide devlsed by me may be applied to any drawer now in use without necessitating any reconstruction or re-modeling of the same and will be found highly elcient,
as it will positively prevent the accidental removalof the drawer andn the consequent dumping of its contents and will also hold the drawer` level while its contents are .being inspected.l Inasmuch as the slides can.- not Warp, the drawer will move freely at all timesA and binding of the same in its supjpori-cannot occur. The several parts of the sli/de may be easily stamped -up out of sheet, metal and consequently theslide may be produced at a very slight cost. It is to be understood, of course, that the base'member 3 and the drawerattaching member 1 0 need not be as extensive as the forms shown, as the intermediate portions of these members maybe omitted, it being essential only that the guide-Ways or ribs'of said members be employed, and the gravity catch or'hook may be pivoted directly upon the side of the 'drawer'. I, therefore, wish it to be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention as the same is defined in the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new is A drawer slide comprising a hase member having its edges formed into guides, the up per guide having a vertical shoulder atan intermediate point of its lcng'tlnan intermediate member having the guides formed on its upper and lower edges and engaging the guides on the base member, a projection at the rear end 'of said intermediate member on the upper edge thereof adaptedto engage the shoulder on the base member, a'istop on the lower edge of the intermediate member, said member being provided with an opening adjacent said. stop, a drawer attaching member slidably fitted in the guides on the intermediate member, and a hoolrpivoted upon the said drawer attaching member near the rear end thereof and adapted to 'engage the stop on the lower` guide et the intermediate mcmber, said hook being4v accessible through the opening in4 the intermediate member when the Aslide is projected and housed between the intermediate. and the dra-w attaching members when the slide iS retracted.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
