Be it known that I, JAMES Rooms, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chioag'o, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sunshade Supports, of

' which the following' is a specification.

The supporting device which is the subject of the present invention is designed more particularly for use in connection with trucks and other vehicles having' a shade over the drivers seat.

It is the object of the invention to provide a simple and eilicient device of the kind stated which permits ready adjustment of the shade and which will securely lock the same in adjusted position. These objects are attained by a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing' the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the support; Fig. 3 is an edg'e view thereof; Fig'. #l is a vertical section on the line t-et of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an elevation showing the shade-folded and swung to hang' under the seat.

Referring specifically to the drawing', 10 denotes the seat of the vehicle provided with a shade 11 which is carried by bows 12 pivoted on each side to a stem 13 so that the shade may be folded. The stems on each side of the shade are pivotally connected to a support mounted on the corresponding side of the seat, so that the shade may be raised or lowered.

Each support comprises a base member 14 iaving' the usual trunnions 15 at its ends whereby it is mounted in bearings 16 carried by the end of the seat. The base member has a top arcuate slot 17 and an int-ermediate portion 1S provided with a square transverse aperture 19 having' a reduced portion 20. This aperture is below the slot 17, and between said slot and aperture is a series of perforations 21 arranged in a curve which is concentric to the slot.

The stem 13 has at its lower end, on each side, an outstanding pin 23 provided with a head 24. Above the pins 23, the stem has, on each side, a lug 25, and above these lugs,

the stem has an aperture 26 through which is adapted to pass a bolt 27 equipped with a hand-nut 28.

In assembling' the parts, one of the pins 23 is passed through the aperture 19 and the stem 13 is then allowed to drop down until the pin seats in the reduced portion 20 of the aperture. rlhis provides a pivotal support for the stem. l/Vhen the pin is posit-ioned as stated, the lug' 25 on the same side thereof is located so that itcan enter one of the perforations 21, and the aperture 26 coincides with the slot 17. The bolt 27 may now be passed through the aperture and slot, and the nut 2S is screwed on the bolt against the face of the member 14. rllhe slot 17 permits the shade to be lowered and also adjusted to perpendicular or slanting' position. The lug 25 assists to hold the parts in adjusted position.

To remove the shade, the bolt 27 is removed and the stem 13 lifted until the head 24 is in line with the aperture 19, after which the stem can be taken oil'. The aperture 19 is larg'e enough to permit the head 2% to pass therethrough but the reduced portion 20 of said aperture is too narrow to permit the head to pass therethrough. Two pins 23 and lugs 25 are provided in order that the stem 13 may be reversed. The shoulders 29 formed by the reduced portion 2O of the aperture 19 serve to temporarily support the stem 13 while it is being' applied or removed.

The device herein described is simple in construction, and efficient in operation. The bow is firmly held, making accidental disengagement impossible, and also eliminating' rattling' and wear.

The stems 13 are on the outside of the base member 14 in order that the shade may be folded and swung' down under the seat as shown in Fig'. 5.. Figs. 1 and 2 show the support for the shade looking' from the inside thereof. In order to place the shade in the position shown in Fig'. 5, it will be necessary only to remove the bolt 27.

I claim:

The combination of a base plate having an arcuate slot and an aperture which is provided with a reduced bottom portion, a member having an outstanding pivot pin CII provided with :L head which is of greater width than the Width of the reduced portion of the aperture, Said headed pin seating in seid reduced portion of the aperture, a bolt carried by the member and passing through the aforesaid slot, and a nut screwed on the bolt.
