Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed January 2, 1913. Serial No. 739,623.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OSCAR E. GREEN, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to peculiar means for hinging the lid or cap, to the body ot a box, jug, or jar; and particularly in cases where the body is formed of, say glass or porcelain which precludes the direct attachment thereto of a hinge member by means oi solder.
In the description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part here of, and in which:
F igurel is a top view of the box with the lid thereof open; and Fig. 2 an edge view of the same. Fig. 8 is a central section of Fig. l, except that a part of the lid is broken away. Fig. 4 is a view of a wire which constitutes one of the hinge members.
Referring now to the drawings, l is the body, and 2 the lid of a box having the general appearance of a watch. The body l is provided with a lip a having an annular groove b for a purpose hereinafter described. The lid2 which is intended to be formed of sheet metal, has a hinge member o formed as is usual, by bending into tubular form a projection which is integral with the lid. The other hinge member consists of a curved spring wire c which is passed through the tubular member c, and adapted to rest in the annular groove Z) and clasp the lip with some force.
In order to prevent independent circumferential movement of the cap or lid, and to hold the wire member of the hinge firmly in place, the lip a of the body l is provided with two transverse notches f which if extended inward would meet on a line drawn horizontally through the center of the hinge and form thereat an acute angle, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l; and the ends g of the wire member of the hinge are bent sharply inward, (see Fig. 4) and inserted in the said notches.
I am aware that it is not new to use a curved spring wire as a member of the hinge which connects the lid to the body of a box, and I do not therefore claim broadly such construction, but claim as my invention l. In combination with the body of a box having a lip which is circumterentially grooved and provided with notches which extend across the lip, a cover or lid having a tubular hinge member, and a complemental hinge member which consists of a curved spring wire which is passed through the tubular member and has its ends bent inward and adapted to lie in the notches in the grooved lip.
2. In combination with the body of a box having a lip which is circumferentially grooved and provided with notches which if extended would intersect on a diameter or' said circumferential groove at an oblique angle, a cover or lid'having a tubular hinge member and a complemental hinge member which consists ot a curved spring wire which is passed through the tubular member and has its ends bent inward and adapted to lie in the notches in the grooved lip.
