To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID M. HOPPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkins, in the county of Nodaway, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planter-Markers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in corn planters of the marker type, and has for its principal object to provide a means of novel construction for retaining the marker in an upright position when it is desired to transport the planter or while turning the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose described which may be readily applied to any corn planter now in general use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is capable of being adjusted to accommodate itself to the marker arm.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure l is a plan view of the rear end of a corn planter showing the application of my invention, the marker arm being in its lower or operative position, Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation thereof showing' the marker arm retained in its vertical position by my invention, Fig. 3 is a per spective view of the attachment, and Fig. l is a bottom plan view of the seat showing the holder attached thereto. 9

Referring to the drawing, A designates the main frame ofa corn planter, and supported by said frame is the usual operators seat 5. Swingingly supported in rear of the frame upon a horizontal pivot 6 is a marker arm 7 of any suitable type, said arm being capable of being swung transversely of the machine from one side to the other and carrying the usual marker 8.
My invention comprises a holder for the arm 7, and this holder is designated as a whole by the reference letter B. This support consists of an elongated body portion arm 9 which is formed adjacent one end with an elongated longitudinal slot 10. The other end of the body portion terminates in outwardly bowed spring jaws 11l1, the ends 1212 thereof being disposed in close relation and diverging outwardly to form a guide.
The holder B is longitudinally disposed under the seat 5, and is secured thereto by means of screws 18-13 or other suitable fastening means. The spring jaws 11 project rearwardly from the seat directly above the pivot pin 6 of the marker arm, and the end portions 12 of said jaws being disposed beyond the path of movement of said arm.
In practice, when it is desired to hold the arm 7 in a vertical position, said arm is swung upwardly and the free end thereof may, if the marker arm is sufiiciently resilient, be then forced outwardly so that the arm can spring forwardly between theend portions 12 of the jaws 11 and thence into or between said jaws. As a result, the arm 7 will be held in its vertical position between the jaws 11 from whence it can be readily disengaged by rearward pressure thereon whenever it should be desired to release the same. a
If the marker arm is not sufliciently resilient to be sprung into and out of the aforesaid engagement, the arm 9 may be moved forward to permit the marker arm being swung up behind the clamp and when the marker arm is in position rearward movement of the arm 9 will cause the marker arm to be engaged by the spring jaws 11. By reason of the shape of these jaws the marker arm will hold the arm 9 from accidental forward movement without the necessity of tightening the screws 13. However, when it is desired to shift the marker arm constantly from side to side the arm 9 may be moved forward and held by tightening the screws so that the path of 'the marker arm will be free and unobstructed.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a planter seat; of an arm slidably mounted beneath said seat, means to hold said arm in adjusted position beneath the seat, and a spring clip carried by the rear end of said arm and adapted to engage a marker arm.
2. The combination with a planter provided with a seat and a marker arm arranged to swing through a Vertical are behind said seat; of an arm having a longitudinally extending slot and being positioned beneath said seat and extending to the rear thereof, fastening means passing through said slot and securing said arm to the seat, said fastening means being arranged to hold the arm in adjusted position, and a pair of spring clamping jaws carried by the slotted arm and having their rear ends separable to permit engagement of the clamping jaws onthe marker arm.
