altit'iiom timing-concern: Be it known that I, Joni: G. MASSIE. a
citizen of the Uhited States, residing at East St. Louis, in the eountyof St Qlair and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coflins, of whlch the following is a specification.
"2 is aplan View. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on the line 3-.-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a detail vertical section on the line H of Fig, 2.
The invention may be employed with any form of covered receptaclewherein it is desired to effect an airtight joint between the cover and the body of the receptacle. Since this form of joint is especially desirable in burial boxes, I have selected one of these and adapted the same toconform to the invention. The type of burial box illustrated in the drawings is of the reinforced concrete type. This, however, is shown merely for the purpose and the reinforcing frames a.
and Z) are embedded in "the sides 5 and bottom 6 of the body and in the flanged cover 7. The reinforcing frames a and b are prefei'ablyskeleton structures, although, other frame structures may be equally as well employed. In the present instance, the longitudinal ribs 9 and transverse ribs 10 of the bottom of the frame a are connected together" in any suitable manner such as by rivets 11 and extend over and under each other, as
shown. The horizontal ribs 12 of the sides of the frame a extend over and under the vertical 'ribs 13, the upper end 'portion's'of the said vertical ribs extending through a groove 14 in the upper edge of the body 5 and curved so as to provide keepers 15 which, when the cover 7 is arranged on the body, extend into a groove 16 formed in the lower face of the -flange 1 7,0f the cover 7 and be-.
21 of he 60 As shown in Fig. 2, the marginal portion of the cover 7 has openings 23 which com- -municate with the groove 16 thereof to receive a suitable locking means, such as a plastic core 24. The core 24 is formed by it will run through the grooves and keepers pouring thematerial, such as concrete into 15 and 18 whereupon, it will, when haro dened, form a positive lock and completely seal the joint between the cover and body.
It will be manifest that the core 24 will provide a lock and prevent displacement of the cover, even though the keepers are not provided. And it will be further observed that it is not necessary to form the keepers with the specific type of reinforcing frames a and 6, nor in fact need they be formed with any reinforcing frame, in which event,
they may be suitably formed within the scope of the present invention so as to connect with metallic or wooden burial boxes of well-known type.
'What I claim as new is: it
1. 'A burial-box having the contacting surfaces of its cover and of its body provided with longitudinal depressions or grooves and one of the parts having an opening communicating with the grooves thereof and a core 109 of plastic material arranged in said rooves.
2. A burial box having the contacting surfaces of its cover and of its body grooved,
vertical keepers arranged in spaced relation in said grooves and adapted to interfit when the cover is on the body for the purpose described.
3. A burial box having its cover grooved and'its body provided with tubular keepers adapted to enter said groove and locking 110 means extending through said groove and through said keepers.
4. A burial box having its body grooved and its cover provided with tubular keepers adapted to enter said groove and locking means extending through said groove and through said keepers.
5. A burial box having its cover and body grooved in their contacting surfaces, a plurality of interfitting keepers arranged in said grooves, and locking means extending through. said grooves and engaging said keepers. 4
6. A concrete receptacle having its cover and body grooved and provided with keepers extending into said grooves, and connected by a core of plastic material arranged in said grooves and engaging said keepers.
7. In a concrete receptacle, :1 body portion ranged in said groove, :1 coverportion havhaving a groove in its upper edge and a reinforcing frame provided with keepers aring a groove to aline 'with the groove of the body and further having a reinforcing frame provided \Vltli) keepers to aliine with the first named keepc 's, and a core of plastic n1aterial extending through said'grooves and engaging said keepers.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence o1 witnesses.
