LOUIS POSNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Application filed April 20, 1912. Serial No. 692,199.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that T, Louis PosNnn, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved larment-llolder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which .the present invention has in view are: to provide a fastener of the character mentioned having clamping means constructed and arranged to avoid presenting engaging parts or elements for entanglement with the clothing of the person wearing the fastener; and to provide a holder of the character derribed, the construction of which is compact, durable, and economical.
Reference is to be had. to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2is a longitudinal vertical. section taken on the median line of the holder, showing the clamping jaw thereof in released position; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the clamping jaw in locked position; and Fig. 4 is a top view of the holder, the clamping jaw being in released position; and Fig. 5 is a lcmgitudinal sectional view of a modi- 'fied form of the invention.
As seen in the drawings, the holder consists primarily of a U-shaped spring body 9. The body 9 is provided with substantially straight and parallel sections 10 and 11, spaced apart to permit the insertion between the same of one or more layers of the garment to be fastened. The section 11 is extended slightly beyond the end of the section 10 to provide a rest 12, as shown best in F31 a of the drawings, to guide the material being inserted between the sections 10 and 11. The section 10 is provided with an arch 13, which is raised above the surface of the section 1.0 sufficiently to form an ample pocket for the clamp head 14 of a clamp lever 15.
Adjacent the arch 13, the material forming the section 10 is reinforced to provide hinge tabs 16. The tabs 16, as seen best in Fig. 1 of the drawings, are pierced to receive a hinge pin 17, forming the pivot for the lever 15. The tabs 16 are disposed at the junction of the arch 13 and the uni form level of the section 10 adjacent the free end of the section 10. At the opposite side of the arch l3 and involving both the arch 13 and the body of the section 10 adjacent the said arch, is formed a slot 18. The slot- 18 is provided to pocket a boss 1.9, which is set out from the head 14. \Vhen the lever disposed as shown in Fig. 2 of drawings, the handle end of the lever 15 is depressed, and rests in an opening 20 formed in the section 10, to receive the same at the hinge-provided side of the arch 13. The lever 15 is provided with acurved handle portion, the enlarged .end of which rests against the arch 13 and at the side opposite the hinge 17, when, as seen in Fig. 3, the lever is moved to operative or clamping position.
The lever is provided with an elongated clamp head 14, preferably formed, as shown in the drawings, from a tube. The length of the head 14: equals the width of the section 11, and when closed, as seen in Fig. 8, rests upon side rails formed at each side of an opening 23 in the section 11. The openin 23 is provided in the section 11 to receive the fabric of the garment to be fastened, when the same is forced therein by the boss 19. The boss 19, as shown in Fig. 3, rests between the rails 22, extending downward into the opening 23. lVhen the cloth being fastened is engaged by the head 14, the same is held by the double grip of the ends of the head clamping the fabric between the rails 22 and the head, and is further gripped and stretched about the boss 19, which forces the material into the opening 23. After being clamped, all effort to pull the fabric from the grip of the head 14 is prevented by the handle portion of the lever 15 resting, as it does, firmly on the arch 13. lVhen it is desired to release the fabric, this is accomplished by lifting the handle 15 and rotating the lever until the head lt is lifted into the arch 13. The passage between the sections 10 and 11 is then clear, to permit the easy and free withdrawal of the fabric.
In the modified form of the holder as shown in Fig. 5 the metal is struck down to form a pocket recess 24, in lieu of the opening 23. The operation of the two forms is the same.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1- 1. A garment holder, having a U-shaped spring body provided with parallel juxtaposed sections, the upper of said sections being shaped to form an arch above the normal level of said sections; and a locking lever pivotally mounted on said upper section adjacent said arch, said lever being provided with a clamping head adapted in operative position to cooperate with the lower section of said body and adapted in inoperative position to rest within said arch, said lever being also provided with a handle portion shaped to conform with and rest upon said arch, said head being provided with a boss, and said sections being both slotted to receive said boss when said lever is o-peratively and inoperatively disposed.
2. A garment holder, having a U-shaped spring body provided with parallel juxtaposed sections, the upper of said sections being shaped to form an arch above the nor mal level of said sections; a locking lever pivotally mounted on said upper section, adjacent said arch, said lever being provided with a clamping head adapted in operative position to cooperate with the lower section of said body, and adapted in inoperative position to rest within said arch, said lever being also provided with a handle por tion shaped to conform with and rest upon said arch; a boss integrally formed on said head; and slots formed in said upper section, to receive said boss and said handle when said lever is operatively and inoperatively disposed. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS POSNER.
