Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 2, 1913. Seria/1 No. 739,665.
To alt whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS VoGoENREI'rnR, asnbjectl of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the-county and State of New York9 have invented a new and `1mproved Window-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is more particularly directed to a structure for holding the upper and lower sashes fixed relatively to each other in a manner preventing relative movement.
`The principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved window lock made up of parts carried by the casing and by the upper and lowersash, whereby the window may be left open a certain amount, the construction being such that the lock is not easily disturbed.
It is of some importance in the ,production of devices in this class that a dependable structure be provided which may be disposed of at low cost, and in the preferred embodiment of the inventive idea such fact has been kept in mind. As my invention is constructed a U-shaped lframe ,is provided,
p with its terminals extendingtoward a window sash, the central portion ofthe U-shaped frame having openings `through which are disposed fastening means, the fastening means being covered by an angle plate, which fits in a groove in the side of the U- shaped frame. By this means the fastening meansfor the U-'shaped frame is covered, so
that it may not be tampered with by per` sons desiring to o en'the window.
Reference is to e li d to the accompany-- ing drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference indicate. corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-` n Figure 1 is a partial view of a .window showing the lock in` position; Fig: 2 is a sectional view on' the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; while Fig. 4 is a partial` perspective of that part of the lock carried by the'casing.
In the adaptation of' the invention as shown, theL window casing is designated as 1, the upper sash 2 and the lower sash 3, the upper and lower sashes being each movable up and down in .the casing.
Fixed to the inside of the u per sash 2` is a plate 4 having a number of t readed open- '12 spaced apart distances correspon ing sash moves is` a frame 7 of substantially U-shape, the intermediate portion 8 of which is provided with recessesv 9 of curvedconformation; extending adjacent the inside of the lower sash 3 is a plate made up of the right-angularly extending portions lOl-11, the portion 11 being provided with o enings to the distances between the threaded openings 5 in the upper sash 2; as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 2 the U-shaped frame 7 is under-cut as at 13, thereby'providing a pocket into which the part 10 extending at rightangles to the part 11 mayfit, the screws which secure the frame to the casing being designated 14 and being covered b the said part 10, whereby removal of the rame and the late is prevented.
T e U-shaped frame 7 is undercut not only at 13 along its intermediate portion 8', but also at 13 along its upper and lower portions! Fixed to the top oaf the lower sash 3 is a means of screws 16,'the said block having a 'passageway 17 extending therethrough,
through which the bolt 1S is adapted `to ex-y tend, the threaded end 19 of the bolt engaging in one of the threaded openings 5 in l the plate 4, the headed end 2O of the bolt coming adjacent one of the openings 12 in the portion 11' of the plate which is fixed on the casing. Referring particularly to Figs.
.2 and 3 it will be noted that when 'the bolt 18 is in operative position the screws 16 which Vhold the bearingfblock 15 are covered by the said bolt, whereby removal of the block from the lower sash is prevented.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 4 it will be noted that the headed end 20 of the bolt 18, when theparts are in operative relation, is seated in one .of the curved recesses 9 in thev frame 7 this end of the bolt is provided with an opening 2l extending therethrough, and a lock 22 has a portion thereof passing through the opening so that separation of the parts by unscrewing the bolt is prevented. I
The windowlock described, when in operative position,` prevents relative movement of the sashes ofthe window, so that being fixed in position to provide a certain opening for .the admission of air, either sash cannot be further moved in order to permit entrance to a room. 1
The use ofthe device is substantially as fUlIOWSP-The plate'4 is permanently fixed to the upper sash 2; the frame 7 and the right angularly extending plate carried thereby are permanently carried by the casing 1; the bearing block 15 is permanently fixed to the top ofk thelower sash- 3; when it is desired to lock the relative positions of the sashes the bolt 18 is entered through one of the openings 12 through the bearing block into one of the threaded openings 5, being turned in order to bring the threaded co-acting parts into engagement, after which the lock 22 is iixedin position, the parts being then in the. relation shown in Fig. 1.
, In order to permit movement of the sash in the casing the lock 22 is removed, after which the bolt 18 may be withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and` desire to secure by Letters Patent is -1. In a construction of the class described, a U-shaped frame the open side of which is normally disposed adjacent a window sash, the intermediate portion of the frame being provided with openings whereby it may be secured in position on .a window casing, an angle plate having a side disposed against theV inner side of the portion of the U- shaped member. having the openings for covering the fastening lneans, the said side of the Vangle plate fitting the U-shaped member, the angle plate having another side normally disposed .at the window sash and provided with openings for the purpose .specied 2. In a construction of the class described, a U-shaped frame, the open side of which is normally 'disposed adjacent a window sash, the intermediate portion of the frame being provided with openings, whereby it may be secured in position on a window casing, there being a groove along one of the sides` of -the U-shaped frame, an angle plate having a side disposed against the inner side of the portion of the U-shaped member having the openings for covering the fastening means, the said'side of the angleplate {it-- ting the groove in the U-shaped member,
the angle plate having another side normally disposed at the window sash and provided with openings for the purpose specified, a bearing normally secured to the window sash, a plate with openings normally secured to a companion window sash, and a bolt disposed through the openings in the plate and the bearing for the purpose specified.
3. In a construction of the class described, a U-shaped frame the open side of which is normally disposed adjacent a vwindow sash, the intermediate portion of the frame being provided with openings whereby it may besecured in position on a window casing, an angle plate having .a side disposed against the inner side of the portion of the U-shaped member having the openings for covering the fastening means, the said side of the angle plate fitting the U- shaped member, the angle plate havinganother side normally disposed at the window sash and provided with openings for the purpose specified, a bearing normally secured to the window sash, a plate with openings normally secured to a companion window sash, a bolt disposed through the opening in the plate and the bearin for the purpose specified, the U-shaped rame having recesses normally engaged by the bolt.
4. In a construction of the class described, a substantially U-shaped frameadapted to be secured to a window casing, the open side of the said frame lying adjacent the Y sash, and a plate made up of right-angularly extending portions contained within the frame, one of the portions serving to cover the fastening means, .whereby the said frame is held in position. I
5. In a construction of the class described, the combination ofa frame of substantially U-shape, the frame bein provided with openings whereby it may be secured in position on a Window casing, the open side of the frame lying adjacent the sash and the closed side being provided with curved ref cesses, a plate made up of right-angularly extending portions carried by the frame and covering the fastening means passing through the said openings therein, whereby when the parts are in operative position removal ofthe frame and plate is prevented. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
