JOI-IN T. SUTTON, OF URBANA, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED HAIR-BRUSH AND 00MB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application led July 17, 1912. Serial No. 709,952.
T o all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. SU'rroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Urbana, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Hair-Brushes and Combs, of which the following` is a specication.
The invention relates to a toilet article and more particularly to the class of combination hair brushes and combs.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a combination article including a hair brush and a comb, the latter being hinged to the stock of the brush so that it may lie upon the said stock when not in use and may swing at right angles thereto for use, the comb being readily removed from the stock of the hair brush should it be desired to use the same separately from the brush.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character which is extremely simple in construction, handy, thoro-ughly reliable and efficient in its purpose and inexpensive in manufacture.
lith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings -Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush showing the comb connected therewith, the article being constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 9. is a side elevation of the article showing the comb at right angles to the stock of the brush ready for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing by numerals the brush comprises a stock 5, which may be of any desirable shape, having a flat outer surface and is formed with a handle 6 as usual,
the said stock being constructed with the ordinary tufted bristles 7 and formed on the outer fiat face of the stock are spaced longitudinally arranged alining pintle receiving eyes or bearings 8 in which is pivoted the pintle 9, the same being passed through an eye 10 formed on a hinged leaf 11 serving as a holder for a comb 12 of any ordinary well-known construction.
r[he comb 12 is detachably engaged in a groove or channel 13 formed in the hinged leaf 11 at the longitudinal edge thereof, the said groove or channel 13 being correspondingly shaped with respect to the back or rear edge 14 of the comb, so as to securely hold the same fitted therein.
Surrounding the pintle 9 is a coiled spring 15 which has one end engaged with one of the eyes or bearings 8 and its opposite end working against the hinge leaf 11 and is designed to normally hold the latter against the outer flat face of the stock 5 when the comb is not in use, thereby enabling the brush to be handled without the comb carried thereby interfering with its use.
Then it is desired to use the comb the hinge leaf 11 is swung outwardly at right angles to the stock 5 of the brush, whereby said comb 12 may be used in the usual way. When the comb is swung outwardly at right angles to the plane of the back of the brush the operator places his thumb against the hinged leaf 11 so as to resist the tension of the spring and thereby sustain the said comb in its operative position for use. then pressure is released from the hinged leaf 11 the spring will move the hinge leaf 11 against the back of the brush and thereby bring the comb to inoperative position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with t-he accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is The combination with a brush stock, of spaced eyes integrally formed with the upper face thereof and rising from the same, a clip having a pintle eye disposed between the eyes on the stock, a pintle passed through the eyes on Jthe stock and Clip for In testimony whereof I ax my signature' swmgrngly eonneetlng the latter to the 1n presence of two Wltnesses.
stock, e eonlb detachably engaged in the r. Clip, and :L coiled sprno' surrounding the JQHN T SUTON pniile and engaging the Clip und brush 1Witnesses:
stock for normally holding the comb in in- F. M. GRANT,
operative position. H. M. CAsSIDY.
