To all 'u /eo/ait may concern lie it known that I, HENRY '1. Com, a citizen Of the United States, residing at Dexter, in the county of Jcllersrm and State olf .N'ew York, have invented new and useful improvements in Rail-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to railways and has 'lor an object to provide a clip for securing a rail to the tie thereof.
The invention embodies, among other features, a clip preferably formed of a single piece of metal and which has rigid eonncetion with a tie, with a portion or head ot the clip overlapping the base oil the rail and secured thereto by spikes, the clips being preferably arranged in pairs in order to prevent the spikes from becoming loose or disengaged from the tie and also to hold the rail iirmly to the tie.

Referring more particularly to the views, l disclose a tie it) on which is mounted a rail. 11. and secured to the tie and overlapping the base ot the rail 1'1. are clips 12, the said clips being preferably arranged in pairs with a pair 01f clips on each side oi the rail and engaging the same to secure the rail firmly to the tie.

The head 13 terminates in a reduced shank i l and a plate 1.5 provided with transversely extending apertures Hi, the said shank lll; and plate 15 being iormed or bent to lie in a vertical plane when the clip 12 is secured to the tie 10, the said clip being secured to the tie by passing suitable bolts through the apertures 10 in the plate .175.
The head it?) is preferably provided with recesses i7 and when the clip is secured to the tie with the head 1.3 overlapping the rail as shown, spikes 1.8 are driven into the tie with the heads 01 the spikes projecting into the recesses l7, thus not only securing the spikes in position but also tirmly holding the rail to the tie so that ii, through the pressure exerted by a train passing over the rail, the tie and rail should be displaced, when the rail rebounds to assume its normal position the tie will also move upwardly therewith, owing to the provision of the clips l2 connecting the rail and tie, thus preventing the spikes 18 from becoming loose or disengaged from the tie. It should be noted that in forming the clip 12, the shank ft-llies in the vertical plane of the plate 15 and the head l3 lies in a plane perpendicular to the plane oi? the shank let and plate .15.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A rail clip for securing the rail to the tie thereoli, comprising a single piece of material. bent to lorm a head provided with recesses adapted to receive spikes therethrough :lfor seruring the head to the rail and securing the rail on the tie, a reduced. shank formed at the inner end of the head and projecting ilmvnwan'dly therefrom, and a plate projecting rearwardly and laterally from the said shank and provided with transversely extending apertures adapted to receive bolts thercthrough :l'or rigidly securing the clip to the tie.
