SAMUEL H. PICKEBING, OF NORBISTOWN, PENNSYLVAIIIA.
. awn-swoon.
Specification of Letters Batent. a lication filed August as, 1912. Serial m. 716,716,
Patented Mm 27, 1913.
have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gun stocks.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a gun wherein the stock thereof may be adjusted relatively to the pistol grip and approximately longitudinally thereof so that the gun barrel may be elevated and lowered relatively to the stock whereby the gun sight may be varied as to height to suit the operator using the un. g It is also my purpose to provide an ad? justable connection between the gun stock and the pistol grip whereby the gun stock may be moved relatively to the pistol grip and over the surface thereof contacting with the gripping head on the stock and whereby the stock may be locked or securely held in the desired adjusted position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in andfalling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a gun embodying my improvements, parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan View of the pistol grip o the gun with the gun stock removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the pistol grip and the gun stock on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-& of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the numeral 1 indicates the pistol grip of the gun while '2 designates the gun stock having the gripping head 3 thereof contacting with the upper surface of the pistol grip.
In accordance with my present invention,
I provide an adjustable connection betweenthe pistol grip 1 and the gun stock 2 by means of which the gun stock may be elevated and lowered relatively to the pistol grip and moved approximately longitudinally of the same so that the gun may be adapted to the requirements of the user as illustrated by the dotted line positions of the stock in Fig. 1. j i
Formed in the upper surface of the pistol grip 1 is aneiongated chamber or slot 4, and a-slid'e way 5 in communication with such chamber and arranged at right angles thereto approximately centrally thereof, the lower end of the slide way 5 communicating with a bore 6 leading to the under surface of the pistol grip. Suit-ably fastened to the gripping head 3 of the stock 2 is a wear plate 7 adapted to ride over the similar plate 8 fastened on the'upper surface of the pistol grip and flush with such surface, the plate 8 on the pistol grip being provided with a slot alining with the chamber or slot 4 in the pistol grip and having guide ways 9 formed therein at the opposite sides of the chamber and at appropriate distances apart to receive guiding lugs 10 carried by the wear plate on the gripping head of the stock so as to properly guide the stock in its movement over the. pistol grip.
In the present instance, the adjustable connection between the stock 2 and the pistol grip 1 comprises a U-shaped yoke 11 having the free ends of the limbs thereof fastened to the gripping head of the stock and the inter-connecting bar thereof formed with a serrated or toothed surface 12, the yoke being disposed within the chamber 4 in the pistol grip and movable longitudinally therein so that the gun stock may be moved to the desired position on the pistol grip.
Slidably disposed within the slide way 5 is a retainer which, in the present embodiment of my invention, comprises a block 13 having a bifurcated end 14 embracing the interconnecting bar of the yoke and carrying pins 15, 15 adapted to bind against the serrated or toothed surface of the interconnecting bar of the yoke so that the gun stock will be held in the desired adjusted position, the lower end of the block 13 contiguous to the bore 5 and coaxial therewith having a threaded bore 16 receiving the shank of a screw 17, the head of the latter being countersunk in the under surface of the pistol grip. .By means of the screw 17, the retainer may be actuated to bind the yoke within the chamber and thereby hold the gun stock against movement, or. the retainer may be actuated to relieve the serrated or toothed surface of the interconnecting bar of the yoke from the influence of the pins 15 whereby the gun stock may be adjusted to any predetermined or desired position.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of myinvention by way of illustration, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: 7
In a gun, a pistol grip having a chamber in the upper surface thereof, and a slide way at right angles to the chamber and communicating therewith, a stock, an adjustable connection between the stock and grip and disposed within said chamber, said connection comprising a- U-shaped yoke having the free ends of the limbs thereof connected to the gripping head of the stock and the interconnecting bar thereof formed with a serrated surface, a retainer within the slide way and slidable therein and comprising a block having a bifurcated end embracing said interconnecting bar of the yoke, pins carried bysaid end and adapted to bind against the serrated surface of said bar, and means for producing the binding action.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
