Specification of Letters fi'atent.
Patented May 20, 1913.
Application filed I anus-r1 8, 1918. Serial Io. 740,018.
' To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES. Loan, a
citizen of the United States, residing at and has for its object the provision of a I drill wherein will be included separable shank and cutting portions and means for strengthening the portions at the joint between their points of connection and for positively preventing the separation of the cutting portion from the shank during the cuttin operation. 2
Wit this and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts, as will be hereinafter escribed and claimed. p In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool, showin the parts assembled. Fig. 2 is a vertica longitudinal section therethrough; and Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The tool comprises separable shank and cutting portions 1 and 2, respectively, which are each of the same transverse diameter whereby the tool may be driven into the material to an portion of the length of the tool, as is evi ent. The section or cutting portion 2 is provided through its axial center with a rectangular, relatively short socket 3, which is adapted to receive a correspondingly formed tang 4 on the attachingv end of the shank 1. The rectan lar configuration of the tank 4 is pre erable, in that the fiat sides of the tang will lie in mutual contact with the flat walls of the socket so as to resist any tendency of the companion portions 1 and 2 to rotate relatively when striking pressure is brought upon the tool.
The shank 1 is provided at diametrically opposite points with grooves 5, which are adapted to register or to aline with similar grooves 6 in iametrically opposite sides of the cutting portion 2 and to receive therewith couplmg and reinforcin plates 7. The
ends of the plates are beve ed, as at 8, so. as to snugly underlie the under-cut end walls 9 of the recesses 5 and 6, so that the plates are held against lateral displacement when the sections 1 and 2 are coupled. Th1s conoperatively retained upon the tool through the provision of a single fastening screw 10. This screw has an outer portion or head lying flush with the outer surface of one of the plates, while the shank of the screw is extended through an aperture 11 in the cuttmfiportion 2 and, then threadedly fitted in .a s rt bore 12 in-the tang 4.
Now that the details of construction of the tool are clearly described, it is said that on the initial connection of the companion portions 1 and 2, "the tang 4 is extended part way into'the receiving socket 3 of the portion 2. The reinforcing plates 7 are then associated with the tool at diametrically opposite points thereon and arranged so as to 'through one of the plates and through the aperture 12 and then operatively fitted in the bore 12 of the connecting tang 4. Both tool portions 1 and 2 are then held properly connected with each other; the joint between the tool portions strengthened and the tool portions are securely held against relative rotation. The
user of the tool may supply himself with any desired number of cutting portions 2 so that a worn or broken portlon may be quickly removed and a new one substituted therefor at a minimum cost and with the maximum saving of time and labor. It is stated that the rectangular shape of the tongue 4 is desirable in that the tool see tions will be held against rotation on the initial connection of said ortions and as a consequence alinement of t e grooves 5 with 1 undercut walls, plates lying within the longitugrooves and having beveled extremities unerlying the undercut walls whereby the plates are heldagainst lateral displacement, and a single fastening device extending through one of the plates and removably fitted with the shank portion and the cut portion.
2. A drill comprising a cutting portion and a shank portion, the cutting portion 10 having a rectangular socket therein, the
shank portion having a rectangular tang extending into the socket, the cutting portion havlng grooves therein at diametrically opposite sides, the shank having grooves therein at diametrically opposite sides adapted to register with eac other when the tan is extended into the socket, means for hol ing the plates agalnst lateral displacement, and a astening device extending through one of the plates and through the cutting portion and removably fitted m the tan v 1% testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
