Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 13, 1912. Serial No. 677,352. 1
for Shirts, of which the following is a speci.-'
fication.
'This invention relates to collar bands for shirts, and has for its object the provision of a collar band which may be applied to any shirt and easily adjusted to fit the same.
It is well known that the collar band of shirts frequently wears out before the body of the shirt and that it becomes necessary to supply a new collar band to a shirt which is otherwise in. good condition, Heretofore, the application of a new collar band has deprived the owner of the use of the shirt while being fitted with the new collar band, and it was necessary to make and fit the new collar band in the same manner as the original band was made and fitted.
'Myinvention supplies a collar band which may be easily attached to any shirt and which is provided yvith means whereby the collar button may be adjusted so as to hold a collar ofany size.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter first fully described, its novel features beingsubsequently pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved collar band, showing the same applied to a shirt; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the preferred form of blank from which the collar band is made; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectionalview taken longitudinally of the collar band and the but-ton receiving tags; Fig. 4; is a view showing two of the tongues or collar button receiving tags in perspective.-
In carrying out my invention, I preferably construct the collar band 1 of a somewhat elongated strip of textile material which may be doubled upon itself along its medial longitudinal -line 2 and have its edges stitched together, the edges being folded inwardly to prevent fraying and form a sub st-antial --strueture for attachment to the upper edge of the shirt body. This form of collar band is preferred, as it facilitates the exact construction 1s not essential, and other detail construction may be employed. The collar band is provided at one end with a longitudinal slot 3 and circular enlargements or perforations 4 at the outer end and at the center of the said slot. 3, the band is provided with a transverse slit Adjacent said slot 5 through which is inserted the inner end 6 a of a tongue-or tag 7 which will preferably becomposed of two or more plies of the same material as the band, and is'llkewlse ing a circular enlargement 9 at its outer end. The straight portion of this tag or tongue projects beyond the slit 5 so as to lie against the outer face of the collar band, and the slot 8 in the said tag or tongueregisters with the inner portion of the slot 3 in the band with the circular enlargement 9 at the end of the slot 8 registering with the inner circular enlargement 4Z'0f the said slot 3. The band is provided near its opposite end with a longitudinal series of transverse slits 10 similar to the slit 5, and through each of the slits 10 is inserted the inner end of a tongue or tag 11 whichis constructed ina manner similar to the tongue 7 previously described. The particular form of band illustrated shows three tags 0'1 .tongues 11, and the outermost tongue is provided with a longitudinal slot 12 having a circular enlargement 13 at its outer end, while-each of the inner tongues 11 is-provided with a longitudinal slot 14 and a circular enlargement 15 at each end of said The tongues are so proportioned and isposed that'the several longitudinal slots will register and the innermost circular enlargement of the intermediate tongue will register with the circular enlargement of the outermost tongue, and the outer circular enlargement of the intermediate tongue will register with the inner circular enlargement of the innermost tongue. I
It is thought that the manner of using my collar band and its manifest advantages constructed with a longitudinal slot 8 havwill be apparent from the foregoing descr p tion taken in connection with the accomover the upper edge of the shirt body, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and stitched thereto in the usualmanner of applying an ordinary collar band. The collar button is then inserted through one or more of the tongues 11 and the opposite end of the band is' caused to overlap the said tongues so thatthe collar button may be passed through the registeringrslots or circular enlargements of the same in the said Overlapping end of the band. Should the wearer desire a band of the smallest size, the collar button will be inserted through the inner enlargement 15 of the intermediate tongue 11 and through the circular enlargement of the outermost to'ngue, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. The
overlapping end of the band is then drawn over so far as to permit the head of the collar button to pass through the end of the band and the tongue 7 thereon, as will be readily understood. ';It will be obvious that a wide range of ad'justments is permissible with my improved band, and that by supplying a single band it Will be possible to fit any one of a large number of shirts of different sizes. The collar bands may be kept in stock so that when the original band is Worn out, it will be the Work of but a feW minutes to supply a new band, and the use of the shirt posed onthe outerside of the collar band to fit comfortably against the neck of the .wearer, thereby avoiding any tendency to rubbing or chafing the neck. It will also be noted that the tags overlap and are so disposed that the ends of the tags recede from the .endyof the collar band; By this arrangement the collar is carried over a thickness which is practically unifoim and at no place excessive, and it is not necessary, When 'Wearing the largest sizedcollar to which the band is adapted, to insert the collar button through all of the tags, While at the same time the collar button may be inserted through two registerin slots, or circular openings. It Will also be noted that the button receivingslot is formed only in one end of the collar band so that at no point of the band will the collar button bear against the flesh so as to irritate or injure I is not interrupted.- I It Will be noted that the tags are all discircular opening at the inner end of the slot in one tag and through the circular opening at the outer end. of the slot in the superimposed tag, the button will be held against movement longitudinally of either slot and, consequently, cannot slip out'of place when it is attempted to engage a coll ar thereover.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A collar band to be secured to the body' of a shirt having a plurality of'button receiving tags secured to its outer side, said tags being disposed to successively recede from the end of the band and being provided with registering slots, the outermost tag having a circular opening at the outer end of the slot therein, and the inner tagshaving circular openings at both ends of the slots therein, one end of the band being imperforate and the other end be ng provided with a longitudinal slot.
, 2. A collar band to be secured to the body of a shirt consisting of; co-extensive plies provided with a longitudinal slot at one end and being imprforate at the opposite end, the outer ply having a single transverse slit near said longitudinal slot and having a plurality of transverse slits near the imper forate end of the band, and a series of longitudinally slotted tags, each tag having one end inserted through one of said slits and secured to and between the plies of the band, the remaining portion of each tag being free of and external to the band. K,
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature" in presence of two Witnesses.
