BENJAMIN L. HEACOCK, or READING, PENNSYLVANIA; nssmnon; To run scnmmzv UNDERWEAR COMPANY, or READING, rENNsYLvAN1A, A conPoBA'noN or PENN- sYLvANIn.
UNnEnnAnmENrL Application filed August 5,1912. Serial No. 713,231.
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN, L. HEA- cocmcitizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
".lhis invention relates to improvements in undergarments and it is intended more particularly for drawers and union suits worn by children. i
The object of the present invention isto provide a garment, the lower ends of the legs of which will have the appearance of a loose rufiled leg portion, while at the same time the leg end is securely closed. In other words, the object is to eifect the combination of a so-called bloomer and ruiHed drawer leg;
The invention is intended more particularly for use by children, especially when made of knitted goods, and is intended primarily to overcome the slipping up of the leg portions. It is of course applicable in all cases where short skirts are used, and where the security of the bloomer' drawers is desired in connection with the more dressy efi'ect ofa ruflie.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearlyv illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates the front elevation of a pair of drawers showing my invention, one leg portion of which is open and the other closed or contracted by the tie string. Fig. 2 shows one garment leg, with a portion of the ruiile cut away, and the end closed by the tie string. Fig. 3 shows a modified form, in which an elastic band is used in the place of the tie string.
The numeral '1 designates the body portion and 2 the leg portions of a pair of drawers. The leg portions are provided with means, preferably in the form of tie strings 3, for closing the lower ends of the.
length that when the tie strings are secured,
thus drawing the lower ends of the legs against the leg of the wearer and forming a bloomer, these rufiles will depend below. the line of the closed portion and present' the eflect of a straight, loose, rufiied garment.
If desired, the tie string 3 maybe replaced by an elastic band 5, as shown in Fig. 3, thus overcoming the necessity of securing it.
It is evident that the present invention may be applied to garments madle of dfiiferent material, but it is intended more particularly for knitted goods, in which the tendency, especially with children, is to creep up the leg while at play. \Vith my invention, the leg portions are made secure and at'the same time the appcarance is that of a rufiie finished garment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an undergarment of the class described comprising, a body portion and two relatively short leg portions, each of said leg portionshaving in its lower extremity'means for contracting the same, and aruflie attached to the outside of each leg portion in close proximity to its contracted end, said ruffles depending below the line of said contracted ends.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
BENJAMIN L. HEAcocK; Witnesses C. F SCHULTZ, ED. A. KELLY.
