Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 1, 1912. Serial No. 728,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, HERBERT Vanities, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sayner, in the county of Vilas and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to anchors intended for use with rowboats and the like and has for its object to provide an anchor of such a shape and of such a construction that it will readily engage a rocky or sandy bottom and will not bring up weeds or mud when withdrawn.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the anchor as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in different views: Figure 1 is a side view of an anchor constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
In these drawings 10 indicates the anchor body which is preferably nearly semi-cylindrical in shape as shown and tapering in thickness from its straight upper edge to its curved lower edge and is formed of a solid metal casting with a stem consisting of a wire bent to form a loop 11 with its*ends crossing and diverging and embedded in the top of the body portion 12 where they are securely held preferably by having the metal cast thereon. The ends of the anchor body have upwardly and outwardly extending projections 12 which constitute engaging hooks for engaging rocks or other projections as the anchor is dragged over the bottom of the body of water. These hook-like projections 12 have their side faces a continuation of the tapering side faces of the body portion 10 as best seen in Fig. 3 and are beveled at their upper ends to form a sharp engaging outer edge which as seen in Fig. 2 is broader than the body portion 10. The rope or cable is attached to the eye or loop 11 of the bent wire stem of the anchor and when the anchor is dragged over the surface of the bottom the broadened chiseltooth spurs or hooks 12 may dig into the sand or mud to obtain a hold thereon, or if the anchor is moved broadside over the bottom the sharp straight edges of the thicker upper portion of the body of the anchor may scrape into the sand and the hooks 12 at the ends will. serve to hold the sand between them and prevent the anchor slipping after it has formed a mound of sand in advance of it which will oflier suflicient resistance to its further dragging movement to hold the boat from drifting. The hooks 12 are further adapted to engage weeds or rocks on the bottom and are not apt to be pulled from such engagement by the draft on the anchor because of the loop 11 wit-h which the rope or cable is connected being a short distance from the center of the anchor so that the draft on the hook may be direct and not cause the anchor to swing around and slip oil of the object engaged.
Another advantage for the anchor of this invention is that it can be dropped into a boat ahead of the front seat out of the way and because of its being rounded on the bottom and thinner than at the top it goes down to the keel and does not spread the boat or do any other damage such as scraping oii' paint, bruising the seat or the like. It is also found in practice that the anchor of this invention does not bring up mud and weeds as with other anchors.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An anchor, comprising an approximately semi-cylindrical body portion tapering in thickness from its straight upper edge to its curved lower edge and provided with upwardly and outwardly extending projections forming engaging hooks.
2. An anchor, comprising an approximately semi-cylindrical body portion with upwardly and outwardly extending beveled projections at the ends thereof forming engaging hooks and a stem for the anchor, comprising a wire bent to form a loop with its ends diverging and embedded in the body portion.
3. An anchor, comprising an approximately semi-cylindrical body portion tapering in thickness from its straight upper a loop with its ends diverging and embedded edge to its curved lower edge, upwardly in the body portion.
