Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18,1913.
Application filed August 18, 1912. Serial No. 714,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that 1, WILLIAM F. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and. State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps; and I do hereb declare the following to be a full, clear, and such as will enable 0t ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of. reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference," generally, to improvements in clamps, and the like; and 'the present invention relates, more particularly; to a novel construction of garment-claspfor securing arments in place.
The said invention has or its principal object to provide a novel, simple, neat and inexpensive garment-clasp for securing a shirt, waist or the like from ridingup or wrinkling above the-trouser or skirt-band ofthe wearer. Other objects of the present invention-not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the followin detailed. description of this invention. ith the various objects of-the presentinvention in view the same-consists, primain the novel construction of garmentclasp hereinafter set forth; and the'invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arran ements and combinations ofthe sevfiral devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in detail in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part ofthe specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a ment-clasp, embodying the principles of the present invention, as applied'to a shirt and trousers to fulfil its function ,of preventing the shirt from riding up or wrinkling above the waist-band of the trousers; and Fig, 2 is. a vertical longitudinal section of the same so applied, taken on line 2-2 in said Fig. 1, and being drawn on an enlarged scale. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively front and rear face views of the" said novel garment clasp exact descri tion of the invention,
ceive a filaspin face view' of the novel garwith or upon removed from the garments, said views being also drawnupon an enlarged scale; and
Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of the said garment clasp with its clasp-portion open.
Similar characters of reference are employed 1n all of the above described views, tolndlcate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the
reference-character 1 indicates a shirt, and
the reference-character 2 indicates the waistportionof a pair of trousers provided with the usual Suspender-buttons, as'indicated by the reference-numeral 3.
. The novelgalrnient-clasp made according to and embodying the principles of the pres ent invention comprisesa rin ashap'ed bodyportion 4, provided at one si Ilwith an outwardly extending annular flange 5, the said flange 5 being concavein its outer su-rztace so.
as to provide a seat-portion 6, adapted to reor i pin member to be subsequently, Ffxtending outwardl or downwardly from said .r ngshape body-portion 4;, and preferably .integral formed therewith, is an extension mem r or tongue 7, the freeend of which is curved aroundto form a hook-member 8. Connected with said. ring'-.shaped body-portion 4, so as to be rigidly" related thereto, and extending outwardl therefrom beneath said annular flange 5 0 said body-portion. 4, is.
an eyeiece 9. Said eye-piece9 provides a means or pivotally connecting in proper re;
lation wlth said body-portion'4, the clasging' or gripping member of the device. clasping "or gripping member comprises a helically coiled spring-body 10 provided at each end with a hooked ortion 11 by means form a resilient. loop-portion-adapted to be sprung over. said flange 5 of said body-portlon 4 so as to seat itself in the seat-portion 6 of said flange 5. 1
' The said garment clas constructed as above described, is applie to the garments as follows :-A fold 12 is taken up in the shirt 1 just above the waist-portion 2 of the trousers. The ring-shaped body-portion 4 with its flange 5 is inserted beneath said fold 12 so that said fold extends across the edges of the flange 5. The resilient loop-portion provided by the spring-body 10 is now forced over said ange 5, and into seated relation the seat-portion 6 of said of which said spring-b y 10 is pivotally secured in connection with said eye-piece 9 totrousers. It willbe understood that two or I more of'said novel garment-Clasps may be thus arranged in connection with the shirt and trousers, and when so arranged, the same will holdthe shirt down in proper. position, and will prevent the same from riding up and wrinkling or bagging above the waistband 201 the trousers, thus maintaining a smooth and neat appearance-of the-shirt, in- 'stead of the wrinkled and unsightly appearance of the same, such as usually results when theshirt is free to ride or work itself up above the trouser waist-portion. The novel garment-clasp above described may also be used by ladles, in a manner similar to that above described, for the purpose of maintaining 'a neat'and smooth relation of the shirt-waist with the waist-band of a skirt or petticoata While I have shown the novel garmentclasp as adapted for the purposes above described, it Wlll also be understood that with slight modifications of thesame to adapt it to the purpose, the said garment-clasp may be advantageously used as the gripping portion of garters for both men'and women, and
for many other similar and analo ous urposes.
I claim i 1. A garment clasp comprising a ringshaped body-portion, an outwardly projecting annular fiangeformed to provide a concave seat portion connected with said bodyportion, a tongue-portion extending from said body-portion andlying in the plane of said body portion, an eye-piece rigidly secured to said tongue-portion,- a coiled spring pivotally connected by its ends with said e e-piece so as to form a gripping memher a apted to be sprung over said flange and into said seat-portion and thereby hold a fold of a garmentin secured relation to said body-portion, and a garment attaching means connected wit-h the free end of said tongue-portion. y
2. A garment clasp comprising a ringshaped bodyortion, an outwardly projecting annular ange formed to rovlde a concave seat portion connected with said bodyportion, a tongue-portion extending from said body-portion and lying in the plane of said body-portion, an eye-piece rigidly secured to said tongue-portion, a coiled spring pivotally connected by'its ends with said eyepiece so as to form a grippin member adapted tobe sprung OYBI; sa1dange 'and into said seat-portion and thereby hold a fold ofa rment in secured relation to said body-portlon, and means connected with said tongue-portion for securing said body-portion to a button of a garment.
In testimony, that -I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of August, 1912.
WILLIAM F. GRAHAM.
