Description

narran sfrairns rannfr onine JOHN ivionalson, or oaaNBY, COLORADO.
DOOR-EASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. iii T1913,
` Application led October 4, 1912. Serial No.i 723,931.
The present invention relates to improve.
ments in dooriaste'ners.
ihe device is primarily intended for use by travelers temporarily occupying rooins in `hotels or inns wherein the doors are gen yei'ally insecurely fastened, and is adapted to serve as a means which may be easily and quickly applied between the door and the trame therefor preventing the surreptitious opening of the door from the exterior of the room.
.in carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a simple, chea and thoroughly effective device of this character which may be readily and quickly inserted viiithin the latch oi' lock opening of the 1geeper and which is provided with a sliding member that is adapted to abut against the door to retain the same in a lockedvcondition.
A further object. of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be readily arranged upon doors pio vided with either ino-rtise or rim lock7 and which further provides adjustable members to engage with both' the casing and the door irrespective of the space or distance between the door and the casing.
The device broadly contemplates the einployinent of a thin liat plateof a sufficient strength which has one of its faces formed or Otherwise provided with an offset lug, the said plate Vadapted to be slid between the door and casing and to have its lug arranged within one of the openings ot' -the lock keeper, whenemployed upon a inortise'locl, or the said plate is arranged ber tween the lock and its keeper, and the lug inserted within the said keeper when the door is provided with a rim lock. The plate is further provided with oppositely arranged' adjustable members which are adapted to abut against the door and casing or against the lock and keeper, while simple but effective means are provided for 'retaining the said sliding members tightly in contact. with the elements with which they engage.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings which form'pa'rt of this speciliczftion and wherein- Figure l is a horizontal sectional view illustrating the device in applied positio'ii upon a door and casing having a niortise lock. Fig.. 2 is a simil-arview iilustratina1 1 v. '3 the dence in position upon a door provides with rim lock. view of the device. Fig. i .is a similar view of the device but looking toward the oppo F is a perspective'.
site side thereof. Fig. 5 is a sectional view upon line 5-5 of Fig. l.
Referring now to the drawings in detailj the numeral l. designates my improved door fastener in its entirety. A fastener contemplates the employment of a thin `tlat'p'late 2 the same being formed. or otherwise provided with a centrally arranged substantially rectangular lug 2. The plate'is providcdwith a longitudinally extending. slot or opening i, and one of the faces of the said plate is formed with depressions o-r teeth 4 which are arranged transversely of the elongated slot 3. Slidably mounted upon the plate 2 is a pair of oppositely arranged latch members 5 and (i respectively. Each ot' the members `5 and 6 is formed upon one otits edges, and that nearest the lug 2 with an1oiiset portion or lip 7. Themember 5 hasits longitudinal edges bent Ato provide ways 9 and 10 which pass over thelongitudinal edges of the plate 2.
The member 5 has its longitudinal edges bent-to provide fianges 9 and l() which are disposed over the plate 2, but which are spaced a .fiiiitable distance away from the opening 13, and the edge of theniembci-` 5V directly opposite the openiiig ,r, ..l i3 s'prov with a substantially rectangular depression: 14.-, the purposehot' the'depresso'n and open ing. will presently be set forth.
` ,The member 6 has its body portion formed Aliwith a centrally arranged elongated slot' 15.,
and an out-ci- 'Facc of the-saine member is of the said member 6 upon the plate 2 and between the ways and fingers of the plate is halted, when the said plate is moved in one direction by this lip 7 contacting with the spring fingers 11 and 12., The said spring .ngers preferably have their ends formed with teeth 18 which are arranged .tof the opposite sides of theiropening 13, andpassing through said opening 13 as well slthrough the slot 15 of the member 6 and the slot the plate 2 is-a t-hreaded stem of the thumb screw 19. The s'crew 19 is adapted to .engage with the threaded bore of a. nut and this nut has its inner face sorated as at 21, and is received within the rectangular opening in the member 5 and vcoacts with the teeth Llof the plate 2'. It
will be noted that when the ,nut 20 is screwed j on the spring arms 11 and 12 will be compressed andthe teeth provided thereon will be. forced tightly into engagement with the teethv 16 of the member 6.
When the device` is to be applied to the door, having a mortise lock as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the lug 2 is inserted Within one of their@ enings in the keeper A while the door s swung to its kopen position. The members 5 and '6 tirer slid upon the plate the limit of the lslot 4, when the doorv is swung to its closed position. `Both of the members l5 and 6 are .then slid upon the plate 2 in the opposite direction to 4bring their lips 7 into engagement with both the door B and the trim C of the door casing and through the medium of the thumb screw 19 effectively secure in such position. It will be apparent that when the device is so arranged it will be impossible to open the door from the exterior thereof without inflicting damage upon the door and as a result thetraveler can occupy` his room in perfect security.
lVhen the device is to be applied to the door rovided with a rim lock as illustrated in Fig. 2 of thedrawings the lug 2" is arranged within the keeper 'D and after the door is swung to a closed position, the latch members 5 and 6 are slid upon the plate 2 into engagementwith both the keeper and the lug of the door.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A door securer for the purpose set `forth rembodying a flat plate having a keeper engaging lug, saidfplate having an elongated slot, the plate'being provided with teeth having one of its ends formed with a lip and arranged upon the plate, said catch being provided with spring arms which overlie one of the faces of the plate, the said arms having their extremities provided with teeth, a second catch member arranged upon the pl'ate and slidably mounted between the spring arms of the irst-namedplate, said second catch member having an elongated slot arranged to register with the slot in the plate, the said second catch having its outer face formed with teeth adjacent its slot, a thumb screw passing th'rough the spring arms and through the slotted openings in the catch and plate, and a nut having its inner face serrated and adapted to be engaged by the thumb screw, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A door securer for the purpose set forth embodying a flat plate having a keepen'em gaging lug and being provided with an elongated slot, a sliding catch having one of its ends formed with a lip, the said catch having its longitudinal edges formed with inturned flanges which ovcrlie the plate and 'are spaced therefrom, said catch havin@ its .ends 'provided ,with spring fingers which \ov'erlie thefslateand which are spaced thercfrom, a second catch; member provided with a lip and slidably mounted between the plate and the flanges and spring arms of the first named catch, the said second catch member ed to register with the slot in the plate, a
arms and through the slotted openings in the catch and plate, Aanut arranged within a depression the first named catch and adapted to beA engaged b v the thumb screw, all substantially as and for the purpose set4 forth.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
