UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. l
DANIEL HEPP, or cnrcaeo, ILLINOIS.
S ecifleation of Letters Patent.
. SAFETY-RAZOR.
Patented-Mar.4,1913.
Application filed February 19, 1912. Serial No. 678,441.
'0 all whom it may concern."
'Be it known that I, DANIEL HEPP, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Chi- -cag0,,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the-following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of razors commonly known as safety razors, and its'object is to provide a novel and improved holder for the blade, saidholder beward end of the plate has a ton ing formed in one piece with a handle, and having means for clamping" the blade, and the guard therefor, in operative position.
The invention also has for its object to simplify the structure and to. reduce the number of parts to a minimum, and furthermore, to .provide means for adjusting.
the tension of the blade.
With thes'eobjects in view, the invention consists in a construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in 'which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the razor com- :plete; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the comb guard.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the handle 5 of the razor is a flat metal strip of suitable length having atone of its ends means for holding the blade 6 and the. co1nb guard 7 for said blade.
The other end of-the handle is the grip. The first mentioned end of the handle terminates in an upward bend 8 at the base of which is a transverse slot 9, and said end of the handle also has two longitudinally spaced circular bosses 10, and to the rear thereof a rectangular boss 11. The grip portion of the handle has a threaded aperture 12 which is-for a purpose to be presently described.
The guard 7 is a sheet metal plate, bowed transversely, and having its opposite longitudinal edges toothed as usual; The fore 13 which is bent upward and has a portion which is oif-set above the plane of the'body of the plate, and is adapted to be passed through the slot 9, and intermediate its ends, the plate has slots 14 adapted to receive the osses 10, said slots extending in the direction of the length of the plate so that it may The blade 6 fits between the guard plate7' and the forward portion of the handle, and
has two circular apertures 17 to accommodate the bosses 10.
That portion of the handle which carries the blade 6 and the guard plate 7 is bent downward from the grip portion of the handle as shown inFig. 2.
To the forward end of the gri portion of the handle is secured at one 0 its ends a spring clam 18, having an aperture through whic passesa clamping screw 19, which is threaded into the aperture 12. The free end of the clamp is bent upward and then downward as indicated at 20 sothat it may engage the top of the guard plate at its rear end and press it down onthe blade 6. The clamp engages that portion of the guard plate having the recess 16, across which latter it extends. and also'for a short distance on opposite sides thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The screw 19 serves to regulate the pressure of the clamp on the guard plate. The clamp may be secured to the handle by-rivets 21 struck up from the same.
In operation, the blade'6 is'placed on the forward end of'the handle 5 in such a posi-. tion that the bosses 10 pass through the apertures 17. The and plate 7 is put in position by first, s1 ping the-tongue 13 through the slot 9, a ter which the plate is swung toward the blade and pressed down until the end 20 of the clamp 18 snaps over the same, the boss 11 entering the recess 16. The screw 19 may now be 0 erated to give the blade the desired tension y varying the pressure of the clamp oh the guard plate. For. a close shave, the guard plate is pulled rearward so that the tongue 13 comes into the slot 9, and the screw 19 is then screwed down to get more pressure. This W111 cause a tighter pressure on the blade and produce a slight curvature thereof transversely. To remove the blade, the clamp 18.is pressed back oif the guard plate, and the latter is swung upward by pressing upward on the tongues 15, after which the plate can "be entirely removed by slipping the tongue 13 out of the slot 9, whereupon the blade is released so that it may now be removed.
The hereindescribed operations can be easily and quickly-effected, and as the parts are few and simple, there is nothing to get out of order. The device can be easily and cheaply manufactured, and it effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, but it will be evident that various minor changes in the structural details may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a handle having a slot in its forwardrend and proj ections, a blade, a guard plate on the blade, said guard plate being curved transversely and having a ton e at its forward end passing through the slot of the handle, said tongue having a portion which is off-set from the guard plate and said guard plate having apertures to receive the projections, and being adjustable lengthwise to place the aforesaid ofi-set portion of the tongue into the slot of the handle, and clamping means engaging the rear end of the guard plate.
2. A safety razor comprising a handle having projections at one of its ends, a blade, a transversely curved guard plate having apertures to receive the projections, said guard plate being adjustable lengthwise, means controlled by the lengthwise adjustment of the guard plate for varying the tension thereof, means for clamping the guard plate down on the blade, and means for varying the tension of said clamping means.
3. A safety razor comprising a handle having an upward bend at its forward end and a slot at the base of said bend, and projections, a blade, a guard plate on the blade, said guard plate being curved transversely and having a tongue at its forward end passing through the slot of the handle, said tongue having a portion which is off-set from the guard plate, said guard plate also having apertures to receive the projections, and being adjustable lengthwise to place the off-set portion of the aforesaid tongue into the slot of the-handle, and clamping means engaging the rear end of the guard plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
