UNITED s A-TEs PATENT OFFICE.
:orm acorn, or P ano, INDIANA I DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
App1ication p1cd September 27, 1911. Serial No. 651,664.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join: BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami. and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Desk; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful combination desk and typewriter cabinet.-
The main object of the invention is to provide a roll to desk having a compartment to one side or the reception of a typewriter, which is supported upon a platform slide, slidably arranged in the compartment.
A feature of -the invention is the provision of a shaft having a pair ofspring tensioned arms," for raising the platform, as
it is withdrawn from the compartment.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a door having an extension leg, for supporting the platform slide when withdrawn, which door also closes the compartment.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of means for locking a plurality of drawers upon the other side of the desk, when the top of the desk is closed, and when the top is opened, the locking means is actuated to release the drawers.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, claimed.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a view in perspective of a desk,'embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional shown in the drawings and view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the platform slide in a lowered position in the compartment.
Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the platform slide withdrawn from its compartment. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1, showing the locking means for the drawers. Fig. 5 is an elevation showing a sectional desk. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail View of a portion of the desk in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the desk in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the plates 16*.and 16. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view more clearly showing how the arms, the rod 9, the springs 10 and the ears 9 are arranged.
Referring more especially to the draw- Patented Mar. 4, 1 913.
members 4, having laterally extending elongated lugs 5. Also. surrounding the shaft 3 is a pair of torsional springs 6. One end of each spring engages the bottom of the compartment, as shown, while the other ends bear slidably against the laterally extending elongated lugs, as shown at 7, so as to tend to hold thearms 4 in the position shown in Fig. 3, in which positions the platform slide 8 is held raised and extended out from the compartment.
'A plate 9 having guide flanges 9 is provided. This plate has ears 9 projecting downwardly from its under surface, in which ears, a rod' 9 is loosely journaled. This rod 9 is also fixed at 9 in the outer ends of said arms, as shown clearly in Fig. 9. Owing to the ears being loosely journaled on said rod 9, the plate 9 is allowed a slight pivotal action relative to the rod, such pivotal action being limited only sufficiently by the springs 10, in order that the platform and the plate 9 are held steady and in approximately horizontal positions, when lowering the arms and retracting and extending the platform. The springs 10 are coiled about and fixed to said rod 9 at their coiled portions, as at 9 Said springs 10 are also arranged, one between each of the arms 4 and each of the ears 9 When raising and extending the platform, the spring arms on the left of said springs 10 are under greater tension, and when lowering the arms 4 and receding the plat-form, the spring arms on the right of the springs 10 are under greater tension, thus steadying the platform and holding the same approximately horizontally.
When the platform slide is'ina raised extended position, the same contacts with the shoulder 11 of the compartment. The platform slide is provided with the usual means 12, for securing the typewriter (shown in dotted lines) in position.
A suitable door 13-, hinged at 14, and .provided with an extension leg 15, is provided, and designed for closing the compartment.
However, when the platform slide is raised and withdrawn from the compartment, the door 13 is swung o n, so as to constitute a support for the sli e, shown in Fig. 3.
The other side of the desk 16 is provided with a compartment 17 for the reception of a lurality of drawers 18. Incidentally a locfiiing means for the drawers when the top of the desk is closed is included in combination with the desk casing. This locking means consists of a standard 19, which is arranged to slide vertically for a short distance, there being shoulders '20 and 21 to limit the standard in its movement. The constricted portions 22 and 23 beyond the shoulders penetrate through the top and bottom of a compartment 17, and between the shoulder 20 and the bottom 24 a coil spring 25 is arranged. This spring constitutes:
means for holding the standard in its raised position, and the shoulder in contact with the top of the compartment 17. This spring also holds the lateral projections 26 of the standard 19 in engagement with the recesses 27 of the projections 28 of the drawers 18,
that is, when'the top 29 of the desk is closed. When the top-29 is open, however, the projections 26 are thrown from engagement with the recesses 27, by virtue of the rear end of the top coming in contact with the lateral lug 30 of the constricted portion 23 of the standard, which forces the standard down againstthe action of spring 25.
From the foregoing in conjunction with the annexed drawings itwill be noted that there has been devised a novel, simple and eflicient cabinet or desk, for containing a sliding platform on which a typewriter is adapted to be supported, and one which has been found to be practical for this purpose.
In the forward lower portion of the compartment 2 is a latch 32 to engage the platform slide to hold the same and the arms 4 down against the actions of the springs 6. The arms 4 are connected by a bar 33, so they will move to ether. In Fig. 5 the si es or pedestals 16 of the desk have plates 16, counter-sunken theres in and secured in place by the screws 16 These plates are provided with knuckles 16", which are received between the knuckles 16 of the plates 16. The plates 16 are also counter-sunken in the upper portion of the desk and secured thereto by the screws 16.
Cotter pins 16 are passed through the '55 knuckles 16 and 16 for securing the plates together, thereby connectingthe u per portion of the desk to the sides or pe estals.
The sides or pedestals are provided with socket, members 17", having transverse pins 17 The front and back portions 17 and 17 of the desk are provided with plates 17 having hooks 17 which are designed to engage the transverse pins 17", for holding the ront and back portions of the desk to the partment, ashaft journaled in the rear lower portion of the compartment, a pair of arms having a bar rigidly connecting them together and pivotally mounted on the shaft, torsional springs arranged on the shaft and disposed and constructed to raise the arms,
a plate having guides at each end and provided with ears projectin from its under surface, a rod journaled in said ears and fixed in the free ends of the arms, thus pivotally mounting the plate on the rod, a spring arranged adjacent each end of the rod an coiled about and fixed to said rod at its coiled portion, and arranged one between one arm and one ear with its free ends bearing with suflicient pressure against the under surface of the plate to steady the same and hold it approximately horizontally when the arms are being adjusted, and the platform mounted in the guides of the plate and adapted to support a typewriter, means to engage one of the arms for holding said arms and the platform down in the compartment, said platform when extended and the arms raised adapted to rest upon an opened closure of said compartment for sup- I porting the platform.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BOOTH. Witnesses: 1
