To (ill whom it may concern}, r
Be it-known that I, GonFRnY' S. MAHN,
a citizen of the United States, residingatthe city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Head Protectors, of
which the following isa specification;
1 My invention'has relation to a wafer-like protector for that extremity of the cigar des-' .ignated as the butt-endand detachably embracing such end so as not to interfere with its drawing when the opposite .end of the cigar is lighted; and said protector integrally formed with ameans to grip the cigar .while held in the mouth, so. that neither the lips or tongue come in direct ontact'with the tobacco of the cigar; and in such connection, in particular, my said 111- vention has relation to the provision of a protector of a highly sanitary and safe naturefor smokers use and in WlllCl'l the same'is detachably applied to the cigar so as to become a fixturethereof and to be sold therewith.
Hitherto Inouth-pieces'have been made in various forms, such as parafiined paper, wood and even thick rubber tubing for smokers use, so as to hold the end of acigar while being consumed, but my invention differs from such devices in that I a wafer-like protector which closely fits the head of the cigar and conforms to the end in which is provided a transverse opening.
of less diameter than the base, so as to pro.-
vide a basal ring thereat, affording therebyv in connection with the cigar of the free drawing of the same, during smoking thereof.
My invention stated in general terms, consists of a wafer-like protector of elastic or pliable material for application to the head of a cigar and provided with a transverse opening of less diameter than the base so as to provide a basal ring, the protector closely fitting the terminal wrappings and butt end ofthe cigar and to become permanently attached thereto and said basal ring encompassing and fitting the said butt end, thereby providing an entirely sanitary and safe protector for the said defined purpose.
The nature, scope, and characteristic features of'my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description-takeniin connection with the accompanyin provide in which;,- Figure 1, is a' side elevational view of a wafer-like elastic or flexible protector in one ,form in application to a cigarand in'which the same embodies essentially-main features of my said invention. Fig. 2, is 'anend View of. the same.
. tral sectional view on the line m-w, of Fig.
Fig. 3, is abroken cen- 1, through the cigar and the protector, showing the transverse opening of the prog drawings forming part hereof,
tector of less diameter than the base thereof,
so as 'to provide'a basal ring, and alsoshow- "ing how the protector.'closely-fits the terminal wrappings and butt end of the cigar about the said'basal ring, and which cigar is shown in broken sect-ion. Fig. 4, is a side elevational view of a modified form of the protector; and Fig 5, isan end view of the same. x
Referring to the drawings a, represents a cigar, one extremity of which is designated as the butt end 0 to which-is, detachably fitted the wafer-like elastic molded protector A,- of .my .invention. This protector has preferably formedintegral therewithnear the rounded end (1 a bead (1 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, to grip the teeth there-' with in supporting the cigar a, in the mouth.
Beyond the bead a the protector is rounded so as to snugly conform to the butt end al of the cigar, and iniwhich end is provided an opening forming abasal ringa, asclearly shown in Figs. 2-and 3. Theprd tector in its wafer-like form is preferably molded in a single tubular conical piece, as shown. The article is rendered tasteless:
and-is provided in a highly sanitary con-' dition for'u'se. Moreover,-smoking' is moreaccept'ablamainly because'above all is p vented thelcigarbeingsoaked with saliva from the mouth and again the cigar can be smoked closer, and as well-the draft of the 1 cigar maintained under better regulation,
hence. insuring more even burning of the cigar. Again as the protector is used in connection with the cigar without either the lips or tongue coming in direct contact with .the tobacco, is avoided the possibility of the disease which 'isvery prevalent and known as smokers patches arising'through contact of the tobacco ofthe cigar with the lips andtongue. Also is obviated burning effects to the tongue as well as soiling of the lips with tobacco, in the smoking of the ciga the base, to provide a basal ring against Having thus described the nature andobpermanently attached thereto, substantially. 10 jects of my invention, what I'elaim as new as and for the purposes described; and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:'- In witness whereof, I have hereunto set.
A wafer-like cigar protector formed with. my signature in the presence of the two suba transverse opening of less diameter than scribing witnesses hereto;
r GODFREY s. MAHN. which the butt end of theci'gar abuts and 1- Witnesses: I the said protector close1yf fitting termi-nal. THOMAS M. SMITH, wrappings of the cigar so as to beonie HELEN F. MILLER."
