EMIL J. MOUGETTE, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION PLUG-COCK.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 23, 1912. Serial No. 679,531.
To all/lahm it may concern:
'arrangement for theA free passage Be it'known that I, EMIL J. MoUGn'i'rE, a
citizenof the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Statev 'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Plug- Cocks, of which the following is a speci cation. l
My invention relates to combination plug' cocks and more particular to a type of combination fiuid plug cocks thatmay be disposed between a gasolene--supply tank and a carbureter.
'lhe object is to provide a means whereby the supply of a liquid may -.be etfectually out off and the means virtually locked, or rather its several elements so disarranged that ali uid -will not have a free passage through tie same until saidelements have been readjusted, said readjustment consisting of `a secret combination the proper arrangement of which causes the elements to present a vfree passage through the cock.
The' improvement consists broadly speaking of a lug cock havin a plug surroundurality of body ound glands, said plug and glands located within a housing and adapted to be arranged to present an interrupted or a free passage for ali uid, sail' ing e fected by the proper alinement of a plurality of markings on said glands and stem, lthe markings being visible from the exterior of Said cock.
nection with automobiles or motor boats in preventing the actuation of the motive power by unauthorized persons, by reason of the vinability of one not having the combination to supply gasolene to the carbureter. Obviously the more complicated the combination and the more elements re quiring proper alinement the more diicult for one to solve the secret. With this point in view vI may provide a plurality of cocks v `Ihaving'gtheir outer casings eitherall cast togetherin a compact group or have them cast separately and joined by reinforced stems, thus-niakingit practically im ossible'for improper persons to properly a ine the elepassage.
aclejarer conception may be had by reference vtothe drawings forming a part of this apin which- .'plicntion.
1 is a plan view of one `form of Figure The device is particularly useful in con-V cock showing the several elements alined for a free passage. Fig. 2 is a sectional eleva-A tion thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a plurality of cocks having the elements arranged to present a free passage. Fig. 4 is a part sectional elevation on line AB ofFig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the type of cook Patented Feb. 25,1913.
shown in Fig. 2, taken on different planes and showing the elementsarranged to present an interrupted passage. Fig. 6 lsa modified form of cock in which disks are used instead of glands; an interrupted passage is here shown.
The improvement more specifically described and the several elements in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 referred 4to by numerals, l represents v a casin having threaded openings 2 and 3,
tted with fluid conducting tubing 4l being and 5. 6 and 7 are tapered glands having openings 8, 9, 10 and 11 and handles 12 and 13 together with external markings 14. 15 is a tapered plug having passage 16, externa-l markings 17, handle 18 and nut 19, said tapered stem or plug being further provided with threaded ortion 20 cooperating -with the nut 21, sprlng 22 and washers 23 and 24 in such 'a man-ner as to bind the whole in an operative form.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, 25 represents the housing or outer casing, 26 a detachable operating handle while 27 is a stem on plug 28 adapted to secure said operating handle. The said stem is here shown square but may obviously be made of any desired cross-section. 29 are the'reinforced connections, 30 the fluid passage, while 31 are short sections of hollow tubing yscrewed into threaded openings of the outer casing at 32. Threaded stem 33, nut 34 and spring 35 together with Washers37 are the securing means for. this arrangement of cock.
In the form of cock shown in Figs.` 3 and 4 I have used no glands, they beingconsidered unnecessary where a plurality of cocks are used. it being understood however that I may if I so desire employ the same ing stems 44 and operating handles 45 sai handles having pointersV 46 operating in conjunction with markings similar to those yshown 1n 'Figs 1 and 3. 46Av is a cover 'held in place by screw thread 47. 48 rep? resents hollow tubing and 49 a passage through the several elements. A central stem 50 to -which the bottom disk is secured has a tapered portion l-coperating with the tapered hole in the outer casing, washer 52, nut 53 and spring 54 in a manner tending'to 4prevent leakage and further insure a practi- 'cal mechanically operative. device. The
small plug 55 in the upper disk is screwed in place after the latter has beenlinedup with its cooperating disks and a combination effecting a free passage through the elements decided upon.
^ In the manufacture of these cocks the same method of grinding will be followed as is obviate this necessity.
'employed in the construction of ordinary .y may be found to improve the device and its effectiveness as long as the alterations and improvements do not depart from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Having thus described the features, their operation 4and advantages, lclaim:
1. A combination` plug cock having a plug, a plurality of glands encircling said plug-and parallel to the same, a housing adapted to secure said plug and glands, openings in the walls of the housing and glands and a passage through the plug, together with means for alining or staggering said openings and passage to presenta free or an interrupted passage through the several elements.-
2. A combination plug cock having a tapered plug, a plurality of tapered glands encircling s aid lug and v.parallel to the same, a tapered ousingadapted to receive said-.plug and-glands, openings in the Walls ofthe housing and glands and apassage through said plug,- means-:for aliningor stag+v gering said openings and passage to present a free' or an' interrupted' passage through 'the several elements, a threaded stem -on .said plug2 a nut, a spring and washers coperat- 'ing 1n such a manner with said threaded f stem as to keep the several elements in proper relation.
A combination plugcock having a tapered plug, a plurality of tapered glands encircling said plug and parallel to the same, a tapered housing adapted to receive said plug and glands the two latter being revoluble, openings in the walls .of said housing and glands and a passage through the plug, handles secured to the upper ends of said glands and plug, a plurality of markings on the visible or upper ends of the glands, plug and housing, said markings being numbered. progressively inA groups on the several elements,` a threaded stem on said plug, a nut having an annularl recess, a helical spring in said recess, and Washers cooperating in such a manner withfthe threaded stem as to keep the several elements' in proper relation.
4. A plurality of combination fluid plug eating means between the elements -in the groups and means for alining or staggering said communicating means whereby a .free or an interrupted passage for a fluid may be had.
5. A plurality of combination fluid cocks arranged in groups, said cocks having tapered plugs and housings, .the Walls 'of said housings being parallel to the sides of the plugs, openings in the walls of said housings and passages through said plugs f cocks arranged in groups having communitogether with means for alining or st-aggering said openings and passages to present a free or an interrupted passage lthrough the several elements. 6. A plurality `of combination fluid cocks arranged in groups, said cocks having tapered plugs and housings, the walls of said housings being parallel to the .sides 'of the plugs, openings in the Walls of said housings and passagesthrough saidplu s, communlcatlng means betweensaidcoc s,
stems in the stops of said plugs and aiportf able -handle for operating said plg,i'narks disposed upon the upper surfaces of the stems and housings, saidl markings "being numbered progressively in groups on lthe several elements, threaded `stems on, said plugs, nuts having annular recesses,'helical f proper relation. ,a
