Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known 1 that I, HUGH GnLLRoY BUCHAN, of the city of Newark, 1n the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a binder, especially adapted for binding a body of loose-leaves, signatures or pamphlets into a book, from which, when so bound, any one of such pamphlets, s1gna tures or loose leaves, may be quickly and easily removed; and, if desired new ones 1nserted in the place thereof, without disturbance of the others originally therein, by those authorized to make such changes; while at the same time, such leaves, signatures or pamphlets are fullyprotected against any accidental or unauthorized removal or displacement; such bindin being at the same time of extreme simplicity of mechanism, and operation, and one adapted to be manufactured at a minimum of cost.

To such ends, the said invention consists in substance, of a back-piece formed of two segmental shaped back-pieces formed of thin sheet-metal,longitudinally hinged together, in such manner that the forward free movin -edges of the binder-back, formed there y, when forced toward one another, will clamp the body of loose-leaves, signatures or pamphlets between such edges, so as to form such body intoa single-book; means for forcing the segments together into the binding position, and for locking the same therein; means for actuating such locking-means removable from the binder; v a cover-strip hinged to each of the segments at the binding-edge adapted to be secured to a cover-board; a cover-board secured to each of such cover-strips; an outer coveringsheet covering each cover-board and extending from one to the other over and around the -back-piece formed by the two hinged segments; end-shields secured to each of the segments at the ends for forming a protective closure of the back-piece when in the binding position; and securing-pins carried by each of the segments hinged to the binding edge of their respective segments, so as to pass through the mass to be bound when the parts are in the binding positionthose carried by one segment beln-g preferably hollow and inclosin those carried by the other segment when m the binding position,

in such manner that the axes of each air of such co-act-ing-securing-pins are coincident, and the solid pins are each covered by its coacting hollow securing-pin. It is not intended, however,'to limit the said invention to a structure comprisingat once all of said mentioned parts, as the same may be varied in construction in many ways, and I do not intend to limit myself, except as more specifically and clearly set forth in the c aims for-min a part of this specification.

Said inventlon is fully shown and described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings forms a part, wherein similar letters or numerals of reference designate like or equivalent parts wherever found throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an end View in perspective of my improved loose-leaf binder in the closed position; Fig. 2 is an end view of the rear or back-portion of such binder on an enlarged scale taken in cross-section, on the line aa of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, and Fig. 3 is a plan view ol the mechanism shown in Fig. 2 lookin to the left in such Fig. 2, taken on the inc 6-1), the hinged-cover-plates being shown at the extreme right thrown backinto the open position, while one pair of the concentric securing-pins is shown in the closed or binding position in full lines, while a sec ond pair of such pins is shown in dotted lines i i-the open or non-binding position.

Referring to the drawing :The reference letter A designates the segmental shaped back-pieces, and B the side covers, of my improved form .of loose-leaf-binder. The back-piece A is composed of two segmental shaped-pieces 1 and 1', formed of suitable sheet-metal bent into proper form, secured together longitudinally at the rear center by a hinge-joint 2, formed either by a suitable hinge riveted thereto, or of hingecoils formed integral from the two sheets,

through which passes the hinge-rod 3; and

on the forward open moving or binding edges t of the segments 1 and 1' are hinged in like manner by means of a hinge-rod 5, cover strips .or plates 6, also of thin sheetmetal, which are firmly secured to the coverboards 7 by suitable rivets 8, or other suitable means. Also hinged to the hinge-rod 5 on one side are a plurality of hollowsecuring-pins 9, each of which incloses a slightly smaller diametered securing-pin Patented Feb 25,1913.

10, which, when the parts are in the binding position, lie within the same, and both within a seat or perforation 11 in the rear edge of the body of leaves, to be bound; which pins are hinged in like manner to the other segment 1 by its hinge-rod 5. Secured usually by glue to the outer side of each of the cover-boards 7 is an outer cover-sheet l2, usuall of leather or other 10 suitable fabric, which usuall extends around and-over the segmental ack A, so as to form the back-cover-strip 12'; and secured within each of such cover-boards 7, usually in the same manner, is the inner 15 cover-sheet 13, of any suitable material such as cloth or leather.

Secured to the segmental shaped piece 1 of the back-piece A, within the same, are two supporting lugs :14 in and between which is firmly secured the slide-rod or bar 15, carrying two slide-blocks or 'bs 16 and 16, which slide freely back and orth there on. Secured in like manner to the other segmental sha ed piece 1 are three journallugs 17 in which is revolubly supported the screw lock rod 18; which is provided with two screw-threaded sections 19 and 19', one of which is of right and the other of left hand thread, upon each of which screwsections is threaded a nut-block or gib, 20

and 20. The lock-rod 18 is preferably provided at the outer end with a square-shouldered portion 21, u on which may be fitted the removable loc ingkey 22, by which such lock-rod 18 maybe rotated in either direction.

Secured by suitable screw-pivot-bolts 23, to the slide-blocks or gibs and also to the nut-blocks or'gibs are two actuating-levers 0 24. and 24, pivoted together at their common centers by a pivot-bolt 25. The lever 24 being ivoted at one end to the slideblock or glb 16, and at the other to the nutblock or lb 20, while the lever 24' is secured in ike manner to the slide-block or gib 16', and the nut-block or gib 20. By this arrangement, it will be seen that the two actuating-levers 24 and 24:, when so connected, form a compound or lazy-tongs 5o lever D, which will draw the two segments 1 and 1 together into the binding position shown in full lines, when the lock-rod 18 is rotated so as .to force the nut-blocks or gibs 20 and 20 apart; and which will force such segments into the open position, shown in dotted lines, when such lock-rod 18 is rotated in the reverse direction, so as to draw the nut-blocks or gibs 20 and 20' together; and when in such fully open posiaction, the securing pins 10 are fully drawn out and disengaged from the coacting hollow-securing-pins 9; and both may then be thrown back upon their res ective hinges into the position shown in otted lines in 5 Fig. 3, when even though the body of leaves anism for forcing the back-pieces into the bound may be provided with securing per-. forations to receive such securing-pins, such body may be at once easily removed. In cases where such body of leaves is -instead of perforations, provided with slots open to the rear, it will of course never be necessary to disengage the securing-pins from each other, inasmuch as as soon as the leaves are released from the binding pressure of the binding edges at 4.0f the segments, they can then easlly be drawn out.

In order to protect the ends of that portion of the body of leaves bound, located within the segmental back formed by the pieces 1 and 1', to each of such pieces 1, is 30 secured in any desired manner, usuall by means of rivets 30, protecting end- p ates 31 and 32, usually of thin-sheet-metal, and of substantially the shape shown; and when the binder is in the closed position, over- 35 lapping at the center, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to permit the insertion of the actuating-key 22, the plate 32 is provided with a suitable key perforation or slot 21.

I claim 1. In a binder, a hinged'back-piece, mech anism for forcing the back-piece into the open and closed positions, a cover-plate extending substantially the full length of each of the back-pieces secured to the forward 5 binding edge thereof by a hinge-joint which forms the compressing points of contactof the back-piece with the body of leaves to be bound, a cover-board secured to eachcoverplate, and an outer flexible covering-piece secured to each of the cover-boards and extending around and over the hinged backpiece.

2. In a binder, a hinged back-piece, mechopen and closed positions, a cover-plate hinged to the forward binding edge of each segment of the back-piece, and securingins adapted to pass through the body of caves to be bound also hinged to the forward-binding-edge of each of the segments or back-pieces forming the hinged-back.

3. In a binder, a hinged back-piece, mechanism for forcing the back-pieces into the open and closed positions, a cover-plate hinged to the forward binding edge of each segment of the back-piece, and securingpins adapted to pass through the body of leaves to be bound also hinged to the forward-binding-edge of each of the segments or back-pieces forming the hinged-back, the pins on one side being hollow and each inclosing its co-acting pin on the opposite segmentof the back-piece when the parts are in the binding position.

4. In a binder, a back-piece formed of two segmental shaped pieces longitudinally hinged together, a cover-plate hinged to each segmental shaped piece at the forward or binding-edge thereof, a slide-bar secured 130 mounted within the other segmental-piece provided with a right and a left-hand screw-thread, each having a threaded nut thereon, and a compound lazy-tongs lever. connecting the thread-nuts with the slidei blocks.

5. In a binder, aback-piece formed of two segmental shaped pieces longitudinally hinged together, a cover-plate hinged to each segmental shaped piece at the forward or binding-edge thereof, a slide-bar secured longitudinally to one of such segmental shaped pieces, slide-blocks or gibs sliding on the slidebar, a screw-lock-rod revolubly mounted within the other segmental-piece provided with a right and a left-hand screw-thread, each having a threaded nutthereon, and a compound lazy-tongs lever connecting the thread-nuts with the slideblocks by suitable pivot joints.

6. In a binder, a back-piece formed of.

two segmental shaped pieces longitudinally hinged together, a cover-plate hinged. to each segmental shaped iece at the forward or binding-edge thereo a slide-bar secured longitudinally to one of such segmental shaped pieces, slide-blocks or gibs sliding on the slide-bar, a screw-lock-rod revolubly mounted within the other segmental-piece provided with a right and a left-hand screw-thread, each having a threaded nut thereon, and a compound lazy-tongs lever connecting the thread-nuts with the slideblock by suitable pivot joints, and a removable key for' rotating the screw-lock-rod.

7. In a binder, a back-piece formed of two segmental shaped pieces longitudinally hinged together, a cover-plate hinged to each segmental shaped piece at the forward or binding-edge thereof, a slide-bar secured longitudinally to one of such segmental shaped pieces, slide-blocks or gibs sliding on the slide-bar, a screw-lock-rod revolubly mounted within the other segmental-piece provided with a right and a left-hand screw-thread, each having a threaded nut thereon, and a compound lazy-tongs lever connecting the thread-nut with the slideblocks, and protective end-pieces over-lapping one another so as to form a covering for the ends of the back-piece, secured to each of the segmental back-pieces of the back-piece at either end thereof.
