WITNESSES INVENTOR f man M1 W COLUMBIA PLANOGHAPII C0., WASHINGTON. D. c.
HERLUF HANSEN, OF ELK HORN, IOWA.
AUTOMATIC PEN-EJECTING HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18,1913.
Application filed June 25, 1912. Serial No. 705,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERLUF HANSEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Elk Horn, in the county of Shelby and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Pen-Ejecting Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a pen holder which is provided with means for ejecting the pen point from the holder when so desired.
Another object of the invention is the production of a means for ejecting the pen point provided the same has become stuck within the holder.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings. and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved pen holder. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sec tion showing the pen point in a gripped engagement with the holder. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section showing the manner in which the pen point is ejected from the holder. Fig. 4 is an end view of the holder. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 55 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 66 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the accon'ipanying drawing by numerals, l designates a handle which is provided upon its inner end with the reduced portion 2 upon which is mounted the shank 3. A sliding casing 41 is mounted upon the shank 3 and normally forms a means for holding the pen in engagement with the holder. The shank 3 is provided with the thickened portion 5 upon its outer ends which constitutes a means for ejecting the pen point provided the same has become corroded within the holder.
A pen point gripping spring which is provided with the neck 6, is fastened to the casing 4 by means of the rivets 7 which pass through the foot 8. The spring is provided upon its outer end with the pen point gripping portion 9 which is curved to form a means for gripping any form of pens.
The shank 3 is provided with the elongated slot 10 formed in its lower side. When the pen point gripping spring is in its correct position within the outer casing it passes through this elongated slot 10 and in this manner forms a means for holding the outer casing l upon the shank. This slot also forms a means for limiting the longitudinal movementof the casing relative to the shank.
It will be seen that by use of the thickened portion 5, an efficient means has been produced for moving the pen point gripping spring from engagement with the pen point and that when the pen point has become corroded to the casing the edges of the thickened portion 5 will form a means for forcing the same out of the casing.
The casing and shank are held in a locked position to prevent accidental movement of the casing relative to the shank by reason of the thickened portion 5 bearing upon the neck of the spring, and the end of the elongated slot 10 resting in the pocket 11 formed by the spring and outer casing.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, whatis claimed as new, is
A pen holder of the class described comprising a handle, a shank mounted upon the outer end of said handle, a casing slidably mounted upon said shank, said shank provided with a thickened portion on its outer end constituting a means for removing the pen point, said shank provided upon its lower side with an elongated slot, means carried by said casing and passing through said slot for holding the pen point in engagement with said casing.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I-IERLUF HANSEN.
